Public bug reported:

do-release-upgrade eventually terminates with the following error

---
Could not calculate the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
---

checking /var/log/dist-upgrade/<now>/apt.log showed that the last record
starts with 'Broken mplayer2:i386 Depends on mplayer'. This is
incorrect: mplayer2 does not depend on mplayer, it conflicts with
mplayer. Removing mplayer2 resolved the issue. mplayer2 was installed
from ubuntu repository.

Note that the original system has been successfully upgraded, apport
reports come from a different system which is configured in a similar
way: 14.04 and mplayer2
