I've actually managed to fix this problem without the workaround by
adding acpi_backlight=vendor to the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX of
/etc/default/grub

I have this problem with 13.04 on a Lenovo y410p (4th gen Intel + nvidia
gpu). My workaround was to add
echo 100 | sudo tee /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
to my /etc/rc.local file but this isn't exactly an ideal solution.
