My issue is with an old, but supposedly supported LTS release,
12.0.4 Server. SINCE it's a Server release, it assumes I know what
I'm doing (even to only setting up in Text mode, and letting me only
apt-get install what I ACTUALLY need to install, which means a working
X Server and FVWM.
Sorry, Dan, I misunderstood one part of your response to me. I never
had zram-config, until I did apt-get install zram-config, after
reading a work-around, earlier in the forum, by dac922.
zram-config did not fully configure (so is an incomplete install on
the Apt system. But, it's a MOST
Is it possible to install a new kernel into the Live environment?
That would require making a new ISO, right?
Are there an instructions for that?
Just replace the kernel image file in the ISO?

Downloaded the Sept 20 desktop 64 bit ISO, and on a Secure Boot UEFI
laptop running 13.04, created USB install media, and installed to
another USB set up with gpt and an EFI partition. Booting the target
USB worked in secure mode, with the signed kernel being used, but the
symlink for the kernel
The above is not possible for the installation scenario, changed status
back to Confirmed.

Landed here while researching an identical boot issue with grub-efi in
Saucy B1 after two hours of hair-pulling. Installed package grub-pc and
everything immediately started working.
