After more researching and testing, I've determined that the bug is caused by the Intel Rapid Start technology in BIOS. It had a timer of 3 hours after laptop sleeps. I disabled that in BIOS and resume from suspend started working just fine. I don't know if this is a Ubuntu bug or a BIOS bug. --
