At a guess the cause of the problem may be some kind of headphone volume
boost option that's turned on by default, and weirdly turned off by
"'Headphone Mic Boost',0 1". This may not be avoidable interference as
much as just excessive volume boost turned on by default.

You have been subscribed to a public bug:
Distribution: Ubuntu 16.04 x64 (Flavour: KDE Neon User Edition 5.10)
linux-image-4.4.0-81-generic appears to contain a regression, probably
related to the CVE-2017-1000364 fix backport / patch.
Using this kernel, the Oracle Java browser plugin always
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=46711 is marked as

The fix for Xenial Xerus x86_64 (linux-image-4.4.0-81-generic) seems to
break all versions of the Oracle Java plugin in all browsers while it
works fine in Linux 4.11.6. See Bug #1699772 for details.

The same bug appears on 17.04. 4.10.0-24-generic, which contains
CVE-2017-1000364 fix, causes Oracle java plugin to crash.
4.10.0-22-generic, in exactly the same setup, works fine. The console
error from Firefox (what most users will see) is

Tried to update from 'Software Updater' (OS updates were the only thing
offered at the moment) because I wanted to install 'Rosegarden' midi
creator. It installed (process bar) about halfway and then stopped. I
left it for a while (hour or so) then had to leave work so
