Bug description:
Newer 4.15 kernels contain the following fix for CVE-2018-1108:
43838a23a05fb ("random: fix crng_ready() test")

This causes cloud-init to stall for a potentially long time during
boot (waiting for entropy I presume). Google reported boot delays of
  75 minutes.

I've tracked this down to the following import in templater.py which causes
the delay:
from jinja2 import Template as JTemplate

Which is called when cc_update_etc_hosts is imported.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1654517] Re: ZFS I/O hangs for minutes

2018-07-21 Thread gf
Hello Karl-Philipp,
Thank you for submitting this bug and reporting a problem with the zfs-linux
package. You made this bug report in 2007 and there have been several versions
of Ubuntu since then.

Could you confirm that this is no longer a problem and that we can close the
ticket?
If it is still a problem, are you still interested in finding a solution to
this bug?
If you are, could you let us know and, in the current version, could you run
the following (only once):
apport-collect 1654517
and upload the updated logs and and any other logs that are relevant for this
particular issue.

Thank you again for helping make Ubuntu better.
G

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1757008] Re: Broadcom wireless drivers failed to build [error: implicit declaration of function ‘init_timer’]

2018-07-21 Thread Melissa Rice
Here is what worked for me to restore WiFi functionality...

1. Run Software & Udpates from the launcher. In the Developer Options
tab, check the box for Pre-released updates. This will require your
admin password and will update the cache.

2. Run Software Updater from the launcher. It will present you with lots
of options of stuff to update. Because I did not want to beta test the
whole proposed release at this moment, but just fix my WiFi, I unchecked
all of the updates except the Broadcom wireless driver. Then I installed
this update, which did not require a reboot.

3. I tested the WiFi by unplugging the internet cable and connecting to
wireless, which worked. A reboot was not requested so I didn't reboot.

4. Run Software & Udpates from the launcher. In the Developer Options
tab, uncheck the box for Pre-released updates. This will require your
admin password, again. It will update the cache. I did this because I
don't want to install any further updates from the Proposed (pre-
release) repository, just the one I needed to make WiFi work again.

My computer is a very old Dell Inspiron with Ubuntu 16.04. The wireless
was working until I updated the OS this morning and the update failed
due to a Broadcom driver problem, as described in this post and also
here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bcmwl/+bug/1777646. The
above procedure corrected the problem without introducing any new
problems. Thanks to everyone who contributed the fix! Much appreciated.

bcmwl 6.30.223.271+bdcom-0ubuntu1~1.2 ADT test failure with linux-hwe-

Status in bcmwl package in Ubuntu:

Status in bcmwl source package in Xenial:

Bug description:
  [Impact]

Currently the DKMS package fails to install on supported custom
kernels that are based on 4.15. That includes the current 4.15
hwe-edge and some of the custom and cloud kernels as well.

  [Test Case]

Install the broadcom-sta package with the 4.15 hwe-edge kernel. The
package installation should proceed without any errors.

  [Regression Potential]

Although new patches were added, the regression risk is very low since
the new changes are conditionally compiled based on the kernel
  version.

Besides that, the new package was tested with the following kernels in
  an amd64 environment:

  - linux-generic 4.4
  - linux-hwe 4.13
  - linux-hwe-edge 4.15
  - linux-azure 4.15

Realtek Ethernet driver lost after update to kernel 4.15.0-24

After automatic update to kernel 4.15.0-24 from 4.13 in my Ubuntu

This issue appears every time my kernel is updated. I assume this is
because I installed the latest version from the vendor manually.

It is usually solved rebuilding the driver. But with this kernel
update, now the driver update procedure fails in the compilation
  phase.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1752772] Re: r8169 ethernet card don't work after returning from suspension

2018-07-21 Thread Parsifal Herzog
I have the same problem. Ther was not a problem with Linux Mint 19 Tara
(Ubuntu 18.04) and kernel 4.13. Most posts here seem to be associated
with Realtek eternet controllers, mine is an Intel I218-LM.

Since kernel 4.15 updates (now automatic on Linux Mint 19) problem
occurs. With latest 4.15.0.29-generic, it occurs on every wakeup and on
wake from sleep.

Tail of demsg output after wakeup from suspend, and network does not
start:

[ 6728.148319] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): enp0s25: link is not ready
[ 6728.186196] Bluetooth: hci0: Intel firmware patch completed and activated

At this point, I unplug the ethernet cable from the laptop, wait 2 seconds, and
re-plug, and this line immediately follows:

Title:
r8169 ethernet card don't work after returning from suspension

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in linux source package in Bionic:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  ===SRU Justification===
  [Impact]
Ethernet r8169 stops working after system resumed from suspend.

  [Test]
User confirmed these patches fix the issue. r8169 continues to work
  after resume from suspend.

  [Regression Potential]
Medium. The fix is limited to one device, all patches are in mainline.
The WOL default change might cause regression for users that depend on
BIOS settings. We can advice them to use userspace tool (systemd,
  ethtool, etc.) instead.

  ===Original Bug Report===
I have noticed that the network stopped working on my desktop after I've
suspended the system and woke it up. On dmesg there are messages like:

  [ 150.877998] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): enp1s0: link is not ready
  [ 150.944101] do_IRQ: 3.37 No irq handler for vector
  [ 150.944105] r8169 :01:00.0 enp1s0: link down
  [ 150.944180] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): enp1s0: link is not ready

When using Xenial (from a different install), this problem is not
happening. This is happening on Bionic.

There are only two ways to restore connectivity:
  1) Reboot the system;
  2) Remove the r8169 module and reinsert it with modprobe.

The motherboard is a AsRock H55M-LE and the Ethernet controller is:

01:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.
RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 03)

Status in linux source package in Bionic:

Bug description:
  == SRU Justification ==

This upstream bug has been confirmed to affect Ubuntu users[1]. As
per the fix commit (below), the most frequent symptom is a crash of
Xorg/Xwayland, i.e. killing the entire GUI, when a laptop is woken
from system sleep. Frequency of the bug is described as once every
  few days[2].

[1] E.g. this user confirms the bug & very specific workaround:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1760450/comments/11
[2] E.g. this log of crashes:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1553979#c23

This is a bug in blk-core.c. It is not specific to any one hardware
driver. Technically the suspend bug is triggered by the SCSI core -
which is used by *all SATA devices*.

The commit also includes a test which quickly and reliably proves the
  existence of a horrifying bug.

I guess you might avoid this bug only if you have root on NVMe. The
other way to not hit the Xorg crash is if you don't use all your RAM,
so there's no pressure that leads to cold pages of Xorg being swapped.
Also, you won't reproduce the Xorg crash if you suspend+resume
immediately. (This frustrated my tests at one point, it only
triggered after left the system suspended over lunch :).

Fix: "block: do not use interruptible wait anywhere"

  in kernel 4.17:

https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/1dc3039bc87ae7d19a990c3ee71cfd8a9068f428

  in kernel 4.16.8:
  https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-
  stable.git/commit/?h=linux-4.16.y=7859056bc73dea2c3714b00c83b253d4c22bf7b6

lack of fix in 4.15.0-24.26 (ubuntu 18.04): https://git.launchpad.net
  /~ubuntu-kernel/ubuntu/+source/linux/+git/bionic/tree/block/blk-
  core.c?id=Ubuntu-4.15.0-24.26#n856

I.e., this bug is still present in Ubuntu source package
  linux-4.15.0-24.26 (and 4.15.0-23.25). I attach hardware details
(lspci-vnvn.log) of a system where this bug is known to happen.

  Regards
  Alan

  WORKAROUND: Use kernel parameter:
  scsi_mod.scan=sync

  == Fix ==
1dc3039bc87a ("block: do not use interruptible wait anywhere")

  == Regression Potential ==
Low. This patch has been sent to stable, so it has had additional
  upstream review.

  == Test Case ==
A test kernel was built with this patch and tested by the original bug
reporter.
The bug reporter states the test kernel resolved the bug.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1776155] Re: Touchpad detected as SYNA3602, does not work at all.

2018-07-21 Thread Reffman
Hey! Thanks for following this up.

reffman@alanah:~$ uname -r
4.18.0-041800rc5-generic
reffman@alanah:~$

Does not seem to make any difference. Touchpad and (integrated) buttons
are completely dead.

I have investigated the touchpad a bit more (by disassembling the
netbook), and it's marked HLC HK-9964 on the circuit board. Searching
the net for more info on this particular touchpad has not yielded any
results yet, probably a little-known chinese manufacturer.

Title:
Touchpad detected as SYNA3602, does not work at all.

Bug description:
On my cheaper-end slimline laptop/netbook the touchpad is (I think
wrongly) detected by Linux to be the SYNA 3602. Anyway it does not

It seems that there is a bug reported on a similar issue, although I
can not confirm that my touchpad hardware is exactly the same:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1688625

If so, there may be a whole new generation of slimline Windows 10

2018-07-21 Thread Adam Novak
That one works. On to 5856293c78e552c012835e667d66775bba20b4f7.

I suspect 3f6a3b035f91 and abd39ac1da07 may be the real problem, since
the CPU I am using is an AMD Ryzen chip, and those are tinkering
specifically with how the kernel handles those.

I went to boot my computer today and it wouldn't boot.

I get an "Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference" message
during the boot process, and, a bit after that, a message from the
kernel watchdog about CPU #0 being stuck. Then the boot process stops
  completely.

I was able to boot the system by telling Grub to load 4.15.0-22, which
works perfectly fine, so there has been a regression.

I am running Ubuntu as a Xen dom0, if that matters. I haven't tried

Title:
Touchpad detected as SYNA3602, does not work at all.

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
On my cheaper-end slimline laptop/netbook the touchpad is (I think
wrongly) detected by Linux to be the SYNA 3602. Anyway it does not
work at all, neither touchpad nor buttons. Freshly installed Ubuntu
18.04 system. External mouse works fine.

It seems that there is a bug reported on a similar issue, although I
can not confirm that my touchpad hardware is exactly the same:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1688625

If so, there may be a whole new generation of slimline Windows 10
  netbooks that have this problem.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1781924] Re: Kernel wrong temperature reporting

2018-07-21 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
So it's a regression? Do you remember the kernel version that doesn't
have this issue?

Title:
  Kernel wrong temperature reporting

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I'm having some thermal trouble since I've started using kernel >4.0.x
with my new laptop. According to psensor and sensord, CPU temperature
jumps above the 90C, stays there for around 1second, and goes back to
50C. All transitions happen in around 100ms. I've cleaned and re-
applied thermal paste and checked the connections twice. More
interestingly, this doesn't happen when the CPU is under heavy-load,
but when it is waiting idly. Sometimes sensord reports the CPU temp
has gone over the critical threshold of the CPU and device shuts down
  itself immediately.

There is also Windows 10 installed as a dual boot and didn't see this
problem on it when idle or under heavy load.

  Dmesg output is full of following warnings;

[ 1282.296247] CPU0: Core temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled
(total events = 109)[ 1282.296267] CPU4: Core temperature above threshold, cpu
clock throttled (total events = 109)
[ 1282.296269] CPU5: Package temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled
(total events = 220)
[ 1282.296269] CPU1: Package temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled
(total events = 220)
[ 1282.296271] CPU4: Package temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled
(total events = 220)
[ 1282.296272] CPU6: Package temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled
(total events = 220)
[ 1282.296273] CPU2: Package temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled
(total events = 220)
[ 1282.296274] CPU7: Package temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled
(total events = 220)
[ 1282.296275] CPU3: Package temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled
(total events = 220)
[ 1282.296281] CPU0: Package temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled
(total events = 220)
  [ 1282.297226] CPU4: Core temperature/speed normal
  [ 1282.297227] CPU5: Package temperature/speed normal
  [ 1282.297228] CPU0: Core temperature/speed normal
  [ 1282.297229] CPU1: Package temperature/speed normal
  [ 1282.297229] CPU0: Package temperature/speed normal
  [ 1282.297230] CPU4: Package temperature/speed normal
  [ 1282.297233] CPU3: Package temperature/speed normal
  [ 1282.297233] CPU7: Package temperature/speed normal
  [ 1282.297269] CPU2: Package temperature/speed normal
  [ 1282.297269] CPU6: Package temperature/speed normal

Because of wrong temperature reporting, kernel throttles the CPU and
reduces overall performance, which results in frustrating user
  experience.

  I've tried followings and find a temporary solution;
   - intel_pstate enabled, turbo-boost enabled > problem exists
   - intel_pstate enabled, turbo-boost disabled > problem frequency reduced
   - intel_pstate disabled, governor set to anythig other than powersave >
problem exists
   - intel_pstate disabled, governor set to powersave > problem frequency
reduced

  I'm suspicious about a kernel bug such as;
  - https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1317190

Title:
  trackpad not recognised by kernel

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
This is a new laptop with reference TongFang GI5CN5E
The UK supplier is unable to give me any further details about the trackpad,
but they agree that there is a problem with the Linux kernel.
There is no response from the trackpad. An external mouse works fine.

Further details: Linux Mint 19 (Ubuntu 18.04 - bionic)
ubuntu-bug linux command did not work:
  *** Problem in linux-image-4.15.0-29-generic
  The problem cannot be reported:
This is not an official Linux package. Please remove any third party package
and try again.

I attempted to attach various diagnostic files as per the instructions for
reporting this bug but as this system is not confirming what has been attached
I also attached (I hope) a file with all 4 reports. Sorry if this is noise...

Title:
  trackpad not recognised by kernel

Title:
  trackpad not recognised by kernel

Status in linux-oem source package in Bionic:

Bug description:
  ===SRU Justification===
  [Impact]
xHC stops to work after some time. This happens when the xHC gets
  runtime resumed/suspended constantly.

  [Test]
User reports this backport fixes the issue.

  [Fix]
In addition to check EINT, also check ports' status.

  [Regression Potential]
Low. It fixes a known bug and it's in -stable.

  ===Original Bug Report===

Now and then, my xhci bus will hang, resulting in these kinds of
  messages in dmesg:

  [252220.002102] xhci_hcd :00:14.0: xHC is not running.
[252220.037491] xhci_hcd :00:14.0: xHCI host controller not responding,
assume dead
  [252220.037500] xhci_hcd :00:14.0: HC died; cleaning up
[252220.133794] usb 1-2: USB disconnect, device number 2
[252220.135042] usb 1-7: USB disconnect, device number 3
[252220.137455] usb 1-8: USB disconnect, device number 4
[252220.243317] usb 1-9: USB disconnect, device number 5

Usually, I can fix this bij resetting the bus by calling a script
  reset-xhci:

for xhci in /sys/bus/pci/drivers/?hci_hcd ; do
    cd $xhci
    echo Resetting devices from $xhci...
    for i in :??:??.? ; do
  echo -n "$i" > unbind
  echo -n "$i" > bind
    done
  done

But doing this today resulted in a kernel bug:

  [252243.401814] xhci_hcd :00:14.0: remove, state 4
[252243.401887] usb usb2: USB disconnect, device number 1

Bug description:
  ===SRU Justification===
  [Impact]
xHC stops to work after some time. This happens when the xHC gets
  runtime resumed/suspended constantly.

  [Test]
User reports this backport fixes the issue.

  [Fix]
In addition to check EINT, also check ports' status.

  [Regression Potential]
Low. It fixes a known bug and it's in -stable.

  ===Original Bug Report===

Now and then, my xhci bus will hang, resulting in these kinds of
  messages in dmesg:

  [252220.002102] xhci_hcd :00:14.0: xHC is not running.
[252220.037491] xhci_hcd :00:14.0: xHCI host controller not responding,
assume dead
  [252220.037500] xhci_hcd :00:14.0: HC died; cleaning up
[252220.133794] usb 1-2: USB disconnect, device number 2
[252220.135042] usb 1-7: USB disconnect, device number 3
[252220.137455] usb 1-8: USB disconnect, device number 4
[252220.243317] usb 1-9: USB disconnect, device number 5

Usually, I can fix this bij resetting the bus by calling a script
  reset-xhci:

for xhci in /sys/bus/pci/drivers/?hci_hcd ; do
    cd $xhci
    echo Resetting devices from $xhci...
    for i in :??:??.? ; do
  echo -n "$i" > unbind
  echo -n "$i" > bind
    done
  done

But doing this today resulted in a kernel bug:

  [252243.401814] xhci_hcd :00:14.0: remove, state 4
[252243.401887] usb usb2: USB disconnect, device number 1

So can we have the -proposed fix landed ?
Pretty please ? With sugar on top ?
Is it a matter of changing one bug tag ?
Which one (verification-done ?) ?

bcmwl 6.30.223.271+bdcom-0ubuntu1~1.2 ADT test failure with linux-hwe-

Status in bcmwl package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid
Status in bcmwl source package in Xenial:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  [Impact]

Currently the DKMS package fails to install on supported custom
kernels that are based on 4.15. That includes the current 4.15
hwe-edge and some of the custom and cloud kernels as well.

  [Test Case]

Install the broadcom-sta package with the 4.15 hwe-edge kernel. The
package installation should proceed without any errors.

  [Regression Potential]

Although new patches were added, the regression risk is very low since
the new changes are conditionally compiled based on the kernel
  version.

Besides that, the new package was tested with the following kernels in
  an amd64 environment:

  - linux-generic 4.4
  - linux-hwe 4.13
  - linux-hwe-edge 4.15
  - linux-azure 4.15

Title:
  trackpad not recognised by kernel

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
This is a new laptop with reference TongFang GI5CN5E
The UK supplier is unable to give me any further details about the trackpad,
but they agree that there is a problem with the Linux kernel.
There is no response from the trackpad. An external mouse works fine.

Further details: Linux Mint 19 (Ubuntu 18.04 - bionic)
ubuntu-bug linux command did not work:
  *** Problem in linux-image-4.15.0-29-generic
  The problem cannot be reported:
This is not an official Linux package. Please remove any third party package
and try again.

I attempted to attach various diagnostic files as per the instructions
for reporting this bug but as this system is not confirming what has
been attached I also attached (I hope) a file with all 4 reports.
  Sorry if this is noise...

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1782347] Re: [radeon] GDM3 fails to load without nomodeset

2018-07-21 Thread zanonmark
Sorry, no improvements.

I booted the live cd in single mode, modified /etc/gdm3/custom.conf as
follows, then exited the single mode and continued the normal boot
process.

1) First attempt:
#WaylandEnable=false

I can see the purple background for a moment, then I'm sent back to text
mode and the mouse arrow keeps flashing.

2) Second attempt:
#WaylandEnable=false
#AutomaticLoginEnable=true
#AutomaticLogin=ubuntu

This time I can't even see the purple background.

All boots were made without 'nomodeset'.

Thanks,
MZ

Title:
[radeon] GDM3 fails to load without nomodeset

Status in gdm3 package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Both with the livecd (usb drive) and the installed version, I must boot with
the 'nomodeset' kernel parameter at GRUB; otherwise GDM3 will not boot (the
screen will keep on flashing in semi-textual mode, with a white mouse arrow
stuck).
This, however, prevents me from using the 'radeon' video driver, dropping me
to a very basic 1024x768 vesa mode.

The bug did NOT occur on Ubuntu 12.04, so it is a regression.
Also, the bug does NOT occur on XUbuntu/XFCE 18.04, so it is a GDM3-Gnome
related thing.

  Thanks,
  MZ

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1782880] [NEW] KDE applications can not select anymore fstab or cifs mounted NTFS partions

2018-07-21 Thread Harald
Public bug reported:

I’m using dual boot systems with kubuntu and windows. The common data
partitions are NTFS partitions. Most were mounted in fstab already
during installation; like: /home/user/ntfspartion.

All kubuntu application like dolphin, digikam, kdenlive did recognize
these partitions correctly as mounted in users home folder. Other, not
fstab mounted NTFS partions, but mounted by cifs were correctly
recognized by apps in /media/user/ntfspartion.

However since a few weeks kubuntu applications of ubuntu versions 16.04
and 18.04 do not know anymore NTFS mounting points!

Dolphin does not show anymore fstab mounted NFTS partitions in the
personal folder, only in the places sidebar. Partitions mounted by cifs
still displayed by dolphin in the sidebar but not in the directory
/media/user/. While the XFCE file manager thunar still works as
required.

Kubuntu applications like digikam or kdenlive can not select anymore
fstab or cifs mounted NTFS partions, so KDE applications can not used
anymore.

** Affects: linux-firmware (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
