Title:
System freezes repeatedly for several seconds; wifi driver related
  errors

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I updated my system about a month ago (Fri 26 April 2019). This was
the first update in several weeks and installed fresh versions of a
whole truck load of applications including a kernel update. Since this
latest bunch of updates the system freezes for a few seconds at
regular intervals. Not fatal, but very annoying.

Output from "journalctl -f" shows the following errors occurring at
the same time as these freezes:

  May 24 10:31:18 dellfvw wpa_supplicant[1078]: wlp3s0: CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-FAILED
ret=-110
May 24 10:31:18 dellfvw kernel: ath10k_pci :03:00.0: failed to receive
scan abortion completion: timed out
May 24 10:31:18 dellfvw kernel: ath10k_pci :03:00.0: failed to stop scan:
-110
May 24 10:31:18 dellfvw kernel: ath10k_pci :03:00.0: failed to start hw
scan: -110

  Corresponding lines in /var/log/syslog:

May 24 10:29:16 dellfvw avahi-daemon[1053]: Registering new address record
for fe80::424:c75b:2a2d:52e2 on wlp3s0.*.
May 24 10:29:55 dellfvw avahi-daemon[1053]: Withdrawing address record for
fe80::424:c75b:2a2d:52e2 on wlp3s0.
  May 24 10:31:18 dellfvw wpa_supplicant[1078]: wlp3s0: CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-FAILED
ret=-110
  May 24 10:31:18 dellfvw kernel: [45569.661175] ath10k_pci :03:00.0:
failed to receive scan abortion completion: timed out
  May 24 10:31:18 dellfvw kernel: [45569.661183] ath10k_pci :03:00.0:
failed to stop scan: -110
  May 24 10:31:18 dellfvw kernel: [45569.661187] ath10k_pci :03:00.0:
failed to start hw scan: -110

I do note the interval between the avahi-daemon entry and the
subsequent errors related to the wireless network interface, but the
former precede the latter consistently in syslog, suggesting they may
be related, which is why I'm including it in this report.

The freezes last a few seconds. Keyboard input is preserved at this
time and typed input appears after the freeze is resolved. Mouse
cursor continues to move during freezes but mouse clicks are only
processed after the freeze is resolved, i.e. the result of the mouse
click is suspended (e.g. buffered) until the system becomes responsive
again. For example, clicking on a window during the freeze will focus
that window after the freeze has been resolved.

The system is a Dell Inspiron 15 3576. Relevant output of lspci -nnk:

  03:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Qualcomm Atheros QCA9377 802.11ac
Wireless Network Adapter [168c:0042] (rev 31)

  Output of lsb_release -rd:
  Description: Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS
  Release: 18.04

  Output of uname -a:
  Linux dellfvw 4.15.0-50-generic #54-Ubuntu SMP Mon May 6 18:46:08 UTC 2019
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

As already said, this is a new issue that has began occurring only
after the recent batch of updates that included a kernel update. I
reported the bug (maybe in the wrong place) but so far I have received
no response. I've lived with this for a month or so hoping that
further updates would fix the problem but it still persists.
Installing the latest firmware update (14 Mar 2019) has no effect. No
other changes were made to either hardware or OS configuration.

  Logfile snippets attached.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1798961] Re: Random unrecoverable freezes on Ubuntu 18.10

2019-05-25 Thread Iain Murray
I was getting random freezes on a Dell Latitude E7450 with Intel HD
Graphics 5500, with no hints as to the cause in logs that I could find.
Freezes could happen multiple times a day when in heavy use, but often
more like once a week. I followed the advice in #42 a month ago and have
had no freezes since (fingers crossed!).

Currently on 18.04.2 LTS with 4.15.0-50-generic, but also had freezes on
16.04 LTS, starting around autumn 2018. Although had been using this
laptop since 2015 without problem before that.

Bug description:
First thing I notice is that the mouse cursor freezes as I'm using it,
then I hit the CAPS LOCK key and the LED indicator doesn't respond.
Then I try the "REISUB" command, but it doesn't do anything either.
Only a hard reset works, pressing down the power button for a few
  seconds.

  How to reproduce?
I couldn't figure out a consistent method. It is still random to me.

  Version: Ubuntu 4.18.0-10.11-generic 4.18.12
  System information attached.

Also happens under Arch Linux and Fedora.
I've talked to another user on IRC who seems to be having the same freezes.

Status in qemu package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  I'm trying to use https://virt-manager.org/ / QEMU. I migrated over a
Ubuntu Guest from Virtualbox, added it to virt-manager, and launch. It
opens the window, then the system freezes.

I don't know if it's a bug in QEMU, libvirt, or virt-manager, or
nvidia. Nvidia is working fine otherwise, Version: 430.09.

This is easily reproduced every time I try starting a qemu machine, so
I can run any diagnostics while this happens if that helps.

  May 24 10:31:18 dellfvw wpa_supplicant[1078]: wlp3s0: CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-FAILED
ret=-110
May 24 10:31:18 dellfvw kernel: ath10k_pci :03:00.0: failed to receive
scan abortion completion: timed out
May 24 10:31:18 dellfvw kernel: ath10k_pci :03:00.0: failed to stop scan:
-110
May 24 10:31:18 dellfvw kernel: ath10k_pci :03:00.0: failed to start hw
scan: -110

  Corresponding lines in /var/log/syslog:

May 24 10:29:16 dellfvw avahi-daemon[1053]: Registering new address record
for fe80::424:c75b:2a2d:52e2 on wlp3s0.*.
May 24 10:29:55 dellfvw avahi-daemon[1053]: Withdrawing address record for
fe80::424:c75b:2a2d:52e2 on wlp3s0.
  May 24 10:31:18 dellfvw wpa_supplicant[1078]: wlp3s0: CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-FAILED
ret=-110
  May 24 10:31:18 dellfvw kernel: [45569.661175] ath10k_pci :03:00.0:
failed to receive scan abortion completion: timed out
  May 24 10:31:18 dellfvw kernel: [45569.661183] ath10k_pci :03:00.0:

As already said, this is a new issue that has began occurring only
after the recent batch of updates that included a kernel update. I
reported the bug (maybe in the wrong place) but so far I have received
no response. I've lived with this for a month or so hoping that
further updates would fix the problem but it still persists.
Installing the latest firmware update (14 Mar 2019) has no effect. No
other changes were made to either hardware or OS configuration.

  Logfile snippets attached.

Bug description:
  SRU Justification:

  [Impact]

Users of kernels that utilize NFS may see the following messages when
  shutting down and starting containers:

unregister_netdevice: waiting for lo to become free. Usage count =
  1

This can cause issues when trying to create net network namespace and
thus block a user from creating new containers.

  [Test Case]

Setup multiple containers in parallel to mount and NFS share, create
some traffic and shutdown. Eventually you will see the kernel message.

somehow reproducable the subjected error, and lxc is working still but
not more managable until a reboot.

  managable means every command hangs.

I saw there are alot of bugs but they seams to relate to older version
and are closed, so i decided to file a new one?

I run alot of machine with trusty an lxc containers but only these kind of
machines produces these errors, all
other don't show these odd behavior.

  thx in advance

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1793595] Re: [radeon] Shell freezes, mostly when running chrome or editing text files.

2019-05-25 Thread Simone Tolotti
I can confirm this bug is an upstream bug.
I moved from Ubuntu to Fedora for this reason but it's still present even on
the latest Fedora 30 with kernel 5.0.17.
Gnome shell (xorg or wayland) freezes mostly when using Chrome, I can't get Sys
info during the freeze because keyboard and mouse aren't responding.
No issues on KDE Plasma desktop.
Tested on my work laptop (above 8 hours daily activity), Gnome freezes 4/5
times a day.

Display controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Topaz XT
[Radeon R7 M260/M265 / M340/M360 / M440/M445] (rev c1)

It also happens on my home desktop PC with Radeon HD7000.

  May 24 10:31:18 dellfvw wpa_supplicant[1078]: wlp3s0: CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-FAILED
ret=-110
May 24 10:31:18 dellfvw kernel: ath10k_pci :03:00.0: failed to receive
scan abortion completion: timed out
May 24 10:31:18 dellfvw kernel: ath10k_pci :03:00.0: failed to stop scan:
-110
May 24 10:31:18 dellfvw kernel: ath10k_pci :03:00.0: failed to start hw
scan: -110

  Corresponding lines in /var/log/syslog:

May 24 10:29:16 dellfvw avahi-daemon[1053]: Registering new address record
for fe80::424:c75b:2a2d:52e2 on wlp3s0.*.
May 24 10:29:55 dellfvw avahi-daemon[1053]: Withdrawing address record for
fe80::424:c75b:2a2d:52e2 on wlp3s0.
  May 24 10:31:18 dellfvw wpa_supplicant[1078]: wlp3s0: CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-FAILED
ret=-110

As already said, this is a new issue that has began occurring only
after the recent batch of updates that included a kernel update. I
reported the bug (maybe in the wrong place) but so far I have received
no response. I've lived with this for a month or so hoping that
further updates would fix the problem but it still persists.
Installing the latest firmware update (14 Mar 2019) has no effect. No
other changes were made to either hardware or OS configuration.

  May 24 10:31:18 dellfvw kernel: [45569.661187] ath10k_pci :03:00.0:

As already said, this is a new issue that has began occurring only
after the recent batch of updates that included a kernel update. I
reported the bug (maybe in the wrong place) but so far I have received
no response. I've lived with this for a month or so hoping that
further updates would fix the problem but it still persists.
Installing the latest firmware update (14 Mar 2019) has no effect. No
other changes were made to either hardware or OS configuration.

time and typed input appears after the freeze is resolved. Mouse
cursor continues to move during freezes but mouse clicks are only
processed after the freeze is resolved, i.e. the result of the mouse
click is suspended (e.g. buffered) until the system becomes responsive
again. For example, clicking on a window during the freeze will focus
that window after the freeze has been resolved.

The system is a Dell Inspiron 15 3576. Relevant output of lspci -nnk:

As already said, this is a new issue that has began occurring only
after the recent batch of updates that included a kernel update. I
reported the bug (maybe in the wrong place) but so far I have received
no response. I've lived with this for a month or so hoping that
further updates would fix the problem but it still persists.
Installing the latest firmware update (14 Mar 2019) has no effect. No
other changes were made to either hardware or OS configuration.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1829255] Re: Sever performance degradation after updating to 5.0.0-15 due to mds mitigation

2019-05-25 Thread munbi
Just I quick follow up. The impact was so severe in my code because I
was using SDL_PollEvent() really often to read the keys status... which
was basically blocking my code.

That was one of the first things I wrote and forgot about it.

So that was really a context switching overhead problem. Thanks again.

Title:
Sever performance degradation after updating to 5.0.0-15 due to mds
  mitigation

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
After updating to the latest kernel 5.0.0-15 I'm experiencing a severe
performance degradation on my machine with one of my applications (a
  gbc emulator developed by me).

  I saw about a 27% performance loss, going from 55fps to 40.

Booting an old 5.0.0-13 kernel or disabling mds mitigation at boot
  with 'mds=off' solves the problem.

I know there isn't much to do about (apart from disabling the mitigation) but
I'm reporting this
because I spent half a day bisecting with git cause I thought the problem was
with my latest commits.

Security updates are obviously important and a priority, but I think that at
least with this kind
of mitigations that cause big performance degradation, an message or a simple
alert to the user
during the update should be shown. Something like: "Plese be aware that this
kernel update can
result in performance loss. See this page for more info." and then link the
specific SecurityTeam
page (which in this case is
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SecurityTeam/KnowledgeBase/MDS )

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1821625] Re: systemd 237-3ubuntu10.14 ADT test failure on Bionic ppc64el (test-seccomp)

2019-05-25 Thread Dan Streetman
This is not a bug in systemd.

The problem is that libseccomp was patched at version
2.3.1-2.1ubuntu4.1, in d/p/lp-1815415-arch-update-syscalls-for-
Linux-4.9.patch, to add a definition for the pkey_mprotect syscall. The
systemd test case checks for the definition of this syscall, and uses it
if it's defined, which with the new libseccomp library, it is.

However, the ppc64el kernel doesn't add support for the pkey_mprotect
syscall until 4.16.

Either the bionic 4.15 kernel should add support for pkey_mprotect
syscall (commit 3350eb2ea127978319ced883523d828046af4045, at least,
possibly more), or libseccomp should remove it, at least for ppc64el
builds on bionic. Adding support for it to the kernel for ppc64el is
probably the best approach.

2019-05-25 Thread Dan Streetman
i marked this as against both libseccomp and the kernel, but as I
mentioned in the last comment, only 1 of them needs fixing. My
suggestion for the best approach is to add pkey_mprotect support to the
bionic ppc64el kernel.

During the Bionic cycle, a decision was made to incorporate the
linux-snapdragon
kernel into the master branch, thus reducing the number of topic kernels and
the
  stable maintenance burden.

But as time passed and new patches were produced by Qualcomm, incorporating
them
into master while avoiding to destabilize generic became more and more
problematic, down to the point where it was not a viable approach
  anymore.

At that point, the decision was made to fork out linux-snapdragon into its own
topic kernel (e.g. linux-raspi2), giving more room to incorporate new code
coming from the Qualcomm tree and avoiding to destabilize any other target in
  generic.

  Fix:

This is a three step process:

  1) disable building linux-snapdragon from master by applying the attached
patch
  to bionic/master

  2) create a new bionic/linux-snapdragon branch and reset hard to my
  lp:snapdragon-topic-kernel branch (see below)

  3) update bionic-meta to point to the new bionic/linux-snapdragon
  kernel

  Regression potential

From the point of view of bionic/master, this pull request doesn't introduce
any
substantial change, and in the future will let us purge generic from several
  external patches.

While from the point of view of linux-snapdragon, with ~600 code commits and
~4k
config changes, this represent a brand new kernel and while great care was
used
while putting together this branch, there's clearly a regression potential
here
but we can't leave linux-snapdragon stagnate behind the curve, so the sooner
we
bite the bullet, the better we can the deal with the eventual fallout.

  What happened: finit_module returns ENOPKG

  My device is: BCM4352 [14e4:43b1] (rev 03)

Happened after latest OS update, downgrading kernel to 164 did not
fix, downgrading package did not work.

  secure boot mode is off.

A few others are having this issue
  https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2413303

There is a possibility it is a modaliases problem -- 2015 chagelog
states that there was a capitalization problem, but I don't know how
  to check this.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1818407] Re: Cant access emmc, error -84

2019-05-25 Thread jagdtigger
Okay as a temporary solution lower the speed to hs200. Boot up the
machine while hitting the F8 button, press cancel when the boot options
box pops up. Then proceed to advanced mode(f7), here go to Chipset/South
Cluster Configuration/SCC Configuration. Here select eMMC max speed and
select hs200. Then click on Save & Exit in the middle, there click Save
and reset. Do not touch anything else in there because it can brick the
device and the only way to reset the BIOS is to blow it apart...

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1826844] Re: nvidia-drivers-* are not on the ISO

This will be backported in the future next to 18.04 in one of your
punctual updates? Are there no plans to include legacy versions for old
hardware (nvidia-340 for example)?
