[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1829310] Re: kernel 5 fails to start systemd-networkd on old Dell Inspiron 1720

Title:
kernel 5 fails to start systemd-networkd on old Dell Inspiron 1720

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  linux kernel 5.0.0-13
  Kubuntu 19.04
hardware: old Dell laptop Inspiron 1720

After upgrading an old Dell laptop Inspiron 1720 (from 2007 I think) from
Kubuntu 18.10 to 19.04, the result is a broken system:
  booting takes + 5 minutes
looking at the boot messages I see "Failed to start Dispatcher daemon for
systemd-networkd" and consequently Network Manager fails to run.
Eventually it reaches the desktop where it takes another 5 minutes to display
the panel.
In a terminal it fails to execute any network command (ifconfig, ip) as well
as "sudo" and "lshw".

If I boot with the previous kernel, the 4.18.0-18 of Kubuntu 18.10, it works
without problem.
For now I have set its grub to start by default the 4.18 kernel instead of
the 5.0 one.

  I tried running "apport-cli -f -p linux --save
kernel5.0onOldDellInspiron1720.apport" but that has been spitting out
periods ("") for 10 minutes now and still hasn't finished.

  dmesg output attached.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1833855] Re: video card

2019-06-23 Thread Daniel van Vugt
There is a slight chance this is a kernel bug, so I am assigning it
there.

I've seen a few reports of people having trouble with analogue VGA
connections not detecting EDIDs, resulting in low resolution.

** Package changed: xorg (Ubuntu) => linux (Ubuntu)

** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu)
   Status: Invalid => New

** Summary changed:

- video card

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * It's not possible to access iBFT (iSCSI Boot Firmware Table) information
(settings for network interface, initiator, and target) in the installer
because the 'iscsi_ibft' module is not present in udeb packages.

   * Even if it was, the installer does not handle iBFT information at all,
thus any settings are ignored, and iSCSI-related configuration has to
be done manually or with workarounds.

   * This impacts user-experience and automatic installation on systems and
deployments which actually do provide the iBFT feature and information,
     but cannot use it practically.

   * With proper iBFT support in the installer (kernel module in udeb package
and automatic iSCSI-related configuration) users will be able to rely on
iBFT to install/deploy Ubuntu on their servers and datacenters.

   * These fixes add the 'iscsi_ibft' kernel module in the scsi-modules udeb,
and configure network/iSCSI according to iBFT information in disk-detect.

This is done in disk-detect so that the iSCSI LUNs are detected as disks
(useful in case of no other disks in the system so the installer doesn't
complain nor wait too long) and that any partman-related preseed options
are not required and may be still available for the user.

  [Test Case]

   * linux package / kernel module in udeb:

     $ dpkg-deb -c scsi-modules_*.udeb | grep iscsi_ibft.ko

Check the module loads in the installer environment.
See comment with example for disco.

   * d-i/hw-detect/partman-iscsi package:
     See comments 11, 12, 13.

  [Regression Potential]

   * linux package: low, the kernel module is not loaded by default,
and only checks whether iBFT information is present in firmware,
then exposes that in sysfs in read-only mode.

   * d-i/hw-detect/partman-iscsi:
     - d-i: kernel version update to include iscsi_ibft module,
based on kernel released to -updates plus one week
monitoring bug reports -- it should be OK.
Tested on amd64/i386/arm64/ppc64el on QEMU, plus amd64
on baremetal -- see comment 11.
     - hw-detect: low, the changes are enabled by a preseed option.
  see comment 12.
     - partman-iscsi: low, simple changes, plus one fix that has
been tested in detail, and falls back to
  previous behavior if it fails.
  see comment 13.

  [Other Info]

   * This has been verified both by the developer with a simple iSCSI
iBFT environment (2 VMs: iSCSI target & initiator with UEFI+iPXE)
and by an user with system/firmware that supports iBFT for iSCSI.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1831229] Re: getrandom02 from ubuntu_ltp_syscalls failed with timeout multiplier = 3 on D-KVM

2019-06-23 Thread Po-Hsu Lin
It looks like haveged helps a lot:

Before installing haveged:
ubuntu@groucho:~$ cat /proc/sys/kernel/random/entropy_avail
79
After:
ubuntu@groucho:~$ cat /proc/sys/kernel/random/entropy_avail
2424

The getrandom tests will finish in the blink of an eye.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1716857] Re: nvidia-drm.modeset=1 results in no monitors detected by Xorg

2019-06-23 Thread Doug McMahon
Being duped here with a more specific bug, i.e
19.10
optimus hardware
No login to ubuntu session possible with gdm, lightdm is ok

Maybe a few comments.

This bug orig. suggests that one could actually login on optimus hardware with
nvidia-drm.modeset=1 thru gdm. That was once the case, it no longer is in
19.10.
The only session available is a wayland one because it falls back to Intel.

As far as why users set nvidia-drm.modeset=1?
I'd suggest the majority do so on optimus machines to be able to use nvidia
without tearing. For the most part none have any interest in wayland even
though wayland would solve tearing.
Why?, because no (or virtually none) optimus machine has ever been able to use
wayland & nvidia drivers. Not in the last couple of years, not now.

While I don't have a desktop machine I do have a laptop with nvidia GPU
only. In that case (19.04) with nvidia-drm.modeset=1 it presents and
logs into a wayland session but llvmpipe only. It does work ok in a
ubuntu session. Maybe I'll give it a try with 19.10 though on this
machine there is no tearing so xorg is fine, currently any positives, if
any, of wayland are outweighed by it's negatives.

Bug description:

nvidia driver.
ubuntu desktop (gnome shell), fresh install
ThinkPad W520 in Nvidia Optimus bios mode.
  Nvidia profile.

  Result:
  no external monitors are detected.
xrandr does not even list them as disconnected (normally it would list five
external disconnected monitors)

  lsmod
shows that nvidia driver is loaded
and the modesetting is working at some level because there is no tearing on
the laptop panel

Note: modeset=1 is the only way to get flicker-free graphics on the laptop
panel. modeset=1 is not the default setting but it is highly desirable.

It works if lightdm is used which is why I have reported this against gdm3
My sessions in this configuration have mostly crashed after a few minutes
with a gdm3 fail whale message in syslog but nothing else looks interesting.

Crash while connecting phone via USB: usbfs did not claim interface 0
  before use

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
After plugging in my phone via a USB cable, my system slowed and soon
became non-responsive, even to Ctl+Alt+F1 and Alt+SysRq+[SUB] keys. At
some point I unplugged the phone. I let the computer sit for an hour
to see if anything would happen; the GUI continued to be displayed,
and it continued to be unresponsive to all keyboard and mouse input.

My phone tends to have a poor and inconsistent USB connection. While
that's a problem, it shouldn't be the kind of problem that leads to a
  system crash.

I plug this phone in regularly using the same cable, and this is the
only time it caused a crash. It usually connects via MTP without
problems. It is conceivable that some other application caused the
crash, or reduced the available memory enough to expose a bug in
usbfs. However, the 640,442 error messages in /var/log/kern.log makes
me think this is a usbfs problem.

I'm not sure where to report this bug, as the logs indicate it is
related to usbfs, which this says has long-since been deprecated and
  removed from Linux: https://askubuntu.com/a/388062

  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Hello,
On my HP Omen 17", with an Intel Corporation Wireless 7265, now (Ubuntu
19.04) when the card go in suspend mode, the connection is lost.
The problem is the card automatically go to suspend mode when it's not used
for X seconds, so I need to reconnect my computer to the AP each 30 - 40s.

I had never seen this bug before Ubuntu 19.04, the computer was previously on:
  - Ubuntu 14.04
  - Ubuntu 18.04

This seem to be the same problem as:
  https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1656233

And a fix seem to be released:

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/drivers/pci/probe.c?id=10ecc818ea7319b5d0d2b4e1aa6a77323e776f76

Can you add this patch on the kernel package?

  Thank you !

  2. Tried several distro's based on ubuntu -> all have the same issue

  3. Checked firmware from Fedora 29 (md5sum was equal) and updated
  firmware (not available, using latest)

  4. Created systemd scripts for disabling & enabling the driver, this causes
the same crashes in /var/log/syslog

  gone, standby works perfectly

Of course i want to be able to use the 1525, so please help me solve the

Happy to perform additional debugging if required.

Title:
xfsdump doesn't allow levels beyond 0-9

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete
Status in xfsdump package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Hi!

I've found, quite surprised, that xfsdump doesn't allow dump level
numbers outside of the range [0-9]. Given that even storing that
number requires a full byte (8 bits), it boggles the mind why more
numbers aren't supported. The usefulness of supporting more numbers
(24? even 255...) is for taking hourly delta snapshots of live
filesystems using xfsdump as a backup measure.

With a simple script one can write a backup that takes a full dump
(level 0) of the filesystem for the first backup of a given date, and
all other backups during that day are incrementals (levels are > 0 ...
i.e. the hour of the day the backup is taken). However, given that
the tool only supports [0-9] as the backup level, this seems like an
  arbitrary limitation.

Is there a real, technical limitation that this level is adhering to?

  Cheers!

After some continued use of the system (Kubuntu (18.04)) Xorg

  2. Nvidia GTX 960M

  Software Specs :

  1. Kubuntu 18.04
  2. KDE Plasma shell version 5.12.7

Something interesting to note is that I have not experienced the same
behavior from Xorg when I switch the GPU to Intel's Integrated
graphics. It is entirely possible that I might not have been able to
trigger those situation with Intel, because after seeing logs I
couldn't make out why this was happening.

Also for the timeline I have used the system for over an year without
any such issue arising. It was the second week of June 2019 to present
day I have seen this problem.

I have experienced this for ubuntu 18.04 and 18.10 on a Lenovo Miix

The login page appears sideways (the mouse orientation is sideways
also). After logging in the screen is corrected. I believe the issue
lies with the detection of the accelerometer or perhaps the driver of
  the accelerometer.

  [Impact]
We have a couple dell and lenovo laptops which have dmic directly connected
to PCH, this needs intel sof driver to work, and intel sof driver is merged
oem-osp1-b kernel and it needs to load firmware and topology file to work.

  [Fix]
Intel provides two binary files to us, one is firmware, the other is
topology file, these two files are built from
https://github.com/thesofproject/sof.git, and the license is BSD 3.

  [Test Case]
put the firmware and topology to rootfs and boot with the oem-osp1-b
kernel on those machines, the sof driver works well.

  [Regression Risk]
Low. just adding two new binary files, no change to existing files.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1832133] Re: Mouse unresponsive on Ubuntu 18.04

2019-06-23 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for that kernel log. It looks like a faulty mouse (or port) to
me.

Try a different USB port. Then if the problem still happens I would
recommend replacing the mouse.

  Mouse unresponsive on Ubuntu 18.04

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Hi there,

I submitted this bug report following advice in
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingMouseDetection

  I dual-boot Windows 10 and Ubuntu 18.04 (on a HP Pavillion Touchsmart
15 Notebook PC 15-n090sa, bought in 2014). I use Ubuntu every day, and
  rarely boot up Windows.

I use an optical mouse attached to my computer by USB cable. It works
perfectly on Windows. But on Ubuntu, it will work OK for a couple of
seconds, but then become less and less responsive, to the point where
  it barely works at all.

I have a touchpad that works perfectly in both Windows and Ubuntu.

Result of lsb_release -rd: Description: Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS. Release:
18.04
I am using Xdiagnose version 3.8.8

  Please help!

  Tom.

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I have experienced this for ubuntu 18.04 and 18.10 on a Lenovo Miix 510
laptop. This problem is fixed on ubuntu 19.04

The login page appears sideways (the mouse orientation is sideways
also). After logging in the screen is corrected. I believe the issue
lies with the detection of the accelerometer or perhaps the driver of
the accelerometer.

Status in linux-oem-osp1 source package in Bionic:

Bug description:
  Description:

S0ix-states represent the residency in the Intel® SoC idle standby power
states.
The S0ix states shut off part of the SoC when they are not in use. The S0ix
states are triggered when specific conditions within the SoC have been
achieved,
for example: certain components are in low power states. The SoC consumes the
least amount of power in the deepest (for example, S0i3) state.

S0ix is triggered by two paths:
  (1) by system PM, e.g "suspend-to-idle" triggered by pressing the power button
  on Android device or command manually triggered on any Linux based distros;

  (2) by runtime PM, i.e no system activities with display off.

S0ix should simply work in theory with trigger path (1) if we have the device
drivers ready. On GLK, we require the below PCI device drivers with system PM
support. ACPI device requirements are WIP.

   I2C designware PCI driver
   USB XHCI PCI ID
 Intel trace Hub[NPK) PCI ID
   SPI BXT PCI ID
 SCSI UFS BXT PCI host ID
   Graphics
   Audio
   PWM
   HSUART
   Security engine

S0ix with trigger path (2) require work as defined below.
 All the above device drivers need to support runtime PM (already defined in
the same LCK above)
 PCI root port to support runtime PM

Both paths will require intel_idle driver support for S0ix support.

  [Test]
Verified on Intel ICL-Y SDP with fwts s2idle test 30 times, the system is
still working.

  [Regression Risk]
Low. Those patches are all small changes, and most of them are adding IDs,
should be safe to include them.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1832101] Re: systemd-networkd: Lost carrier e1000

2019-06-23 Thread John Doe
Sorry for the delay, I was busy.

The out-of-tree e1000e driver does not resolve the issue.

Running, for example, "wget http://ping.online.net/1000Mo.dat -O
/dev/null" from the host, with all traffic on the non-e1000e interface,
and no traffic on the e1000e interface, causes the e1000e interface to
reset.

removed netplan, switched to systemd-networkd and added
configurewithoutcarrier to true, the option ignorecarrierlost is not accepted

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1833877] Re: Kernel couldn't recognize Touchpad and Trackpoint as different devices for Lenovo Thinkpad A275

2019-06-23 Thread Misha T
i8042 & psmouse modules debug messages for previous version of kernel
(4.15.0-50). Here Kernel recognize Trackpoint and Touchpad as two
different devices, but TouchPad doesn't work at all, and buttons of
TrackPoint doesn't work properly

** Description changed:

- So, the problem described in head er.
+ So, the problem described in header.
xinput sees only one input device (PS/2 Synaptics TouchPad) instead of two
(PS/2 Synaptics TouchPad and IBM TrackPoint).
So I couldn't turn off TouchPad without of turning off Trackpoint, and so on
and so on

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1722478] Re: Two-finger scrolling no longer works after resuming from suspend

2019-06-23 Thread Jon Danniken
Hardware: Thinkpad T440s
OS/Kernel: Kubuntu 18.04/4.15.0-52-generic
Driver: mtrack

Also experienced this bug. The temporary fix (modprobe) worked, but
commenting out the "blacklist i2c_i801" line resulted in the machine not
finding the touchpad on reboot.

I was able to successfully fix this issue by changing /etc/default/grub
as stated in post 43.

Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1831710] Re: Touchpad not working (Lenevo Ideapad 330 series)

2019-06-23 Thread Sumneet Kaur Bamrah
Hey Jeremy,
I have been accustomed to using the mouse for this long since the initial
purchase, it's okay! Any way to know, rather verify if there is nothing
wrong with the touch pad itself?

Title:
  Processor turbo dsiabled/throttled after suspend

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
After suspending/resuming my laptop on battery power, I noticed choppy
video playback. I've narrowed it down to the CPU being locked to
lower frequencies after suspend/resume (only on battery). Plugging
the laptop back in does not restore the normal performance, nor does
suspend/resume after plugging it back in. The performance doesn't
drop until after the suspend/resume, I'm not sure if it is _supposed_
to throttle when on battery, but either way the behaviour is wrong.

Doing a full shutdown and restart restores the performance to normal.

Prior to a suspend/resume cycle, cpupower reports:

  $ sudo cpupower frequency-info
  analyzing CPU 0:
driver: intel_pstate
CPUs which run at the same hardware frequency: 0
CPUs which need to have their frequency coordinated by software: 0
maximum transition latency: Cannot determine or is not supported.
hardware limits: 800 MHz - 3.00 GHz
available cpufreq governors: performance powersave
current policy: frequency should be within 800 MHz and 3.00 GHz.
The governor "powersave" may decide which speed to use
within this range.
current CPU frequency: Unable to call hardware
current CPU frequency: 1.26 GHz (asserted by call to kernel)
boost state support:
  Supported: yes
  Active: yes
2800 MHz max turbo 4 active cores
2800 MHz max turbo 3 active cores
2800 MHz max turbo 2 active cores
3000 MHz max turbo 1 active cores

Afterwards, the frequency is clamped (cpufreq-set -r --max=3.0GHz has
no effect) and turbo is disabled:

  $ sudo cpupower frequency-info
  analyzing CPU 0:
driver: intel_pstate
CPUs which run at the same hardware frequency: 0
CPUs which need to have their frequency coordinated by software: 0
maximum transition latency: Cannot determine or is not supported.
hardware limits: 800 MHz - 3.00 GHz
available cpufreq governors: performance powersave
current policy: frequency should be within 800 MHz and 1.80 GHz.
The governor "powersave" may decide which speed to use
within this range.
current CPU frequency: Unable to call hardware
current CPU frequency: 950 MHz (asserted by call to kernel)
boost state support:
  Supported: no
  Active: no
2800 MHz max turbo 4 active cores
2800 MHz max turbo 3 active cores
2800 MHz max turbo 2 active cores
3000 MHz max turbo 1 active cores

Trying to re-enable turbo mode by setting the no_turbo intel_pstate
/sys/ entry back to 0 is rejected:

  $ echo 0 | sudo tee /sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate/no_turbo
  0
  tee: /sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate/no_turbo: Operation not permitted

However, these two commands *do* work around the problem, forcing
turbo mode back on and then restoring the normal frequency range:

  sudo x86_energy_perf_policy --turbo-enable 1
  sudo cpufreq-set -r --min=0.8GHz --max=3.0GHz

I also see this error in dmesg after some resumes (but the above
problem sometimes happens without this error message):

  Dec 16 11:36:25 shauns-laptop kernel: intel_pstate: Turbo disabled by
  BIOS or unavailable on processor
