I replaced default.pa with the one extracted from the deb mentioned by
@David but, in my case, it did not fixed the issue, so as @Hui said
there can be several underlying issues causing the same problem.
I can confirm #51: no sound from internal speaker and headphone jack on
4.15.0-108-generic.
Upgraded to 4.15.0-108-generic from 4.15.0-96-generic on bionic the
sound is broken again.
Booting into the old 4.15.0-96-generic, sound is working without any
other changes.

Different kernel gives different RAM results
Public bug reported:
Ubuntu 16.04 guest VM running under vmware hypervisor. VM is used for
running qemu/docker instances of virtual routers.
After upgrade to linux-image-4.4.0-184-generic we get hard-lockup of the
kernel (no interaction on the console, no crash report or anything) as
soon as VM
Any fix for this yet? I have been unable to use my second screen for
months now :-(
