You have to look at exact package version to know if you have new enough kernel.

Hey John. We had the same problem with extremely low load. Some form of
leak. Never found a good solution (besides reboot when leak reaches
critical as a work around). For the exact same purpose (code/file
transfers) running on Ubuntu 14.04 is much better. I recommend you
upgrade unless you can

I tried installing the 3.16 kernel on Trusty. The touchpad was still
detected as a mouse.
I then tried applying the patch in #8 from the Github repo and the
touchpad stopped responding entirely--no movement or clicks.
Is there anything I can contribute to help get this fixed?

I tried to install kernel 3.16 from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v3.16-utopic/ but the nvidia kernel module didn't compile
against it. Attached make.log...

I would agree with Philipp, as this effectively breaks pxe booting
Ubuntu 14.04 and prevents any organization trying to install 14.04 at
any scale from doing so. The workaround from zoolook, unfortunately,
didnt work for me.

I am using Dell Inspiron 11 3000 2-in-1 (3147) too.
I don't have any luck with acpi=off (Boot up process stuck at ath9k and irq
problems)
acpi = force/ht did not help either (Able to boot up)
