I am unable to commit bisect the kernel because I can't even get the
system to boot with any of the older kernels.
The bug is still happening, which is to say that the system boots to the
login prompt, then after a minute or so goes immediately to sleep
(hibernate?). When I press the power button
You shouldn't have needed to replace the kernel, the workaround I posted
works with the normal kernels from 14.04. But anyway it doesn't do any
harm, and you don't need to worry about 'locking' the kernel - apt-get
won't replace your kernel 3.17 package with any of the ones from 14.04

Please reopen. This happens to me for Ubuntu 14.04 on a Lenovo T530 with
nvidia drivers. It only happens when I switch to Discrete Graphics in
the BIOS, but running in Optimus breaks other things (cannot change the
virtual layout of external screens without glitches).

everything except the mouse pointer, which froze after about 10 seconds

I also have a Dell Inspiron 15R. Standby used to work with Ubuntu 12,
but stopped working upon upgrading to Ubuntu trusty 14.04. I attempted
upgrading kernel to 3.13.0-36, but this didn't solve the
DisplayLink who makes the chip involved here doesn't take Linux
seriously, so it's probably an idea to help petition them to develop
