nvidia-340-updates because the DKMS module failed to build and boot hung
while it was installed. So, I was using nouveau for my GeForce 8600GT

Using xubuntu (14.10 upgraded to 15.04) Anyway distro shouldn't be much
different. Basically to make it working you need to do (what i did):
1. Get the windows drivers from your note
I upgraded my other laptop (6.5 years older, i386 rather than amd64) to
15.04, and I get the same issue there. Upstream kernel v4.1-rc1-vivid
works, 3.19.0-15 has the bug. Let me know if you'd like another bug
report on the older hardware, or if there's anything else I should do.

Great to hear that. I'll recommend my friend to re-install with
SecureBoot – although I think no-one should support that.. :/
I have those touchpad problems too, at least, I had. It didn't occur
since I updated to Ubuntu 15.04.
