Title:
Connecting an Osprey 2 Mini (USB cellular wireless router) sometimes
causes an endless reset loop or a kernel panic

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
Steps to reproduce (happens > 50% of the time, but not every time):

Turn on an Osprey 2 Mini, and connect it to a USB port via a USB cable
while both the device and computer are on (i.e. hotplug).

  Observed symptoms:
  - sometimes the Osprey 2 Mini goes into an endless reset loop (visible as the
LEDs on the front of the device flashing rapidly), being reset approximately
every 200ms; on such occasions, the Ubuntu user interface often reacts as
though I'd inserted an audio CD containing corrupted data (e.g. via repeatedly
adding an "Audio CD" icon to the launcher and then removing it, and putting up
dialog boxes complaining about failure to read the data).
  - sometimes the kernel panics (often some time after the reset loop starts,
perhaps up to 10 seconds); when this happens there was always or nearly always
a reset loop occurring beforehand.
  - sometimes the device resets once or not at all, then works as expected
(showing up as a network interface, and allowing me to communicate to the
Internet with a wired connection); I'm currently using an Osprey 2 Mini for
this purpose right now.

The kernel panics lock up the entire system (forcing a hard power
off). lt-Sysrq commands don't work in this state (even though I have
them enabled), and sometimes the Caps Lock light flashes repeatedly.
The logs end some time before the panic occurs.

  /var/log/syslog:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1556471/+attachment/4598145/+files/syslog

The reset loops also occurred when I was using Ubuntu vivid. The
kernel panics only happened after an upgrade to wily. Output of lsusb
  -v is attached.

Bug description:
When trying to install Ubuntu 15.10 with a RAID-10 created the system
crashes after some time during the installation. Hitting Alt+F4 gives
the following output as seen from screenshots in attachments.

It looks like kernel 4.2 have some issues with RAID-10 as we can
install Ubuntu 15.04 (with kernel 3.19) without problems. If we
upgrade to kernel 4.2 in Ubuntu 15.04 we get the same errors.

We have no problems when installing without RAID, RAID-0 or RAID-1.
We've also tried on different hardware and different disk types/sizes
but we still get system crash.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1554613] Re: screen flickering on XPS13 9350

2016-03-16 Thread Thomas Bonfort
I have tested 4.0.0-13 which does not seem to exhibit the flickering
present from 4.0.0-9 to 4.0.0-12. It does however now present tearing
artifacts when switching focus between windows, see
https://www.dropbox.com/s/opirfyzklathw3i/VID_20160316_112021.m4v?dl=0
for a screengrab.

This relates to the VSS "Windows Server Backup" process that kicks off at
midnight on the host and finishes an hour and half later.
Yes, we do have hv_vss_daemon and hv_kvp_daemon running for the correct
kernel version we have. We're currently running kernel version
3.13.0-49-generic #83 on one system and 3.16.0-34-generic #37 on the other. --

Customers have reported running various versions of Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS
on Generation 2 Hyper-V Hosts. On a random Basis, the file system
will be mounted Read-Only due to a "disk error" (which really isn't
the case here). As a result, they must reboot the Ubuntu guest to
get the file system to mount RW again.

We see the same errors on both.
As a result, we've been hesitant to drop any more ubuntu guests on our 2012R2
hyper-v system because of this. We can stop the backup process and all is
good, but we need nightly backups to image all of our VM's. All the windows
guests have no issues of course. We also have some CentOS based guests
running without issues from what we've seen.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1556471] Re: Connecting an Osprey 2 Mini (USB cellular wireless router) sometimes causes an endless reset loop or a kernel panic

2016-03-16 Thread ais523
I have sent the email. I will check the mailing list archives on
occasion, and provide a link when it becomes available.

System freezes after closing lid on Thinkpad X260

Status in Linux:
  Unknown
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
My current Ubuntu version is 14.04.4 but I also tried 15.10.
Regardless of the Ubuntu version there is a serious problem with my new
Thinkpad X260 when it is in battery mode and I close and reopen the lid. The
problem is not affecting the suspend mode as it still occurs when this mode is
disabled.

what I expect to happen: After closing the lid the screen goes off.
When I open the lid again, screen goes on and I can use the laptop.

what happens every time: When I close the lid the screen turns black.
When I open the lid again the screen displays the system but it is
frozen and does not react on input.

Interestingly I can not reproduce this problem when the laptop is connected
to an AC power source.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1554613] Re: screen flickering on XPS13 9350

2016-03-16 Thread Thomas Bonfort
Christopher,
Yes I have read that section but it is not useful as selecting between bad/good
is already the required workflow. The issue is that the documentation refers to
using the packaging scripts in the debian/ subdir, which is not present and/or
usable in the intermediate bisecting steps.
I'm currently testing using this workflow, please advise if it is the correct
one:

make mrproper && git clean -d -f && git checkout debian
git bisect good/bad/skip
cp /boot/config-4.4.0-8-generic .config
make oldconfig
make-kpkg --rootcmd=fakeroot --append-to-version "-04-deadbeef" --initrd --us
--uc kernel_image -j4
#install and test kernel

here is my current bisect log. note that I have to skip many commits as
they fail to compile:

git bisect start '--' 'drivers/gpu/' 'include/drm/' 'include/uapi/drm/'

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1553882] Re: GPU hangs after resume from suspend

2016-03-16 Thread Reinis Zumbergs
Ah, of course, I have to install the corresponding headers too, so that
DKMS module gets built. Now I'll run daily on the latest kernel, that
will increase the testability.

Additional symptom to the bug report. Sometimes instead of freezeing,
GPU accelerated windows get kinda disturbed - flickering and artefacts
on screen.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1507689] Re: Shaky screen on Lenovo Y70 Touch

Seems that changing kernel worked. Now running with kernel version

Title:
Shaky screen on Lenovo Y70 Touch

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
I have a relatively new Lenovo Y70 Touch (came preinstalled with
  Win8). I installed Ubuntu 14.04 on it.

By "Shaky" (in the headline) I mean that the image shakes from side to
side (it seems) about 3 points. Some points end up at the end of the
previous line. Very annoying to look at. Before changing anything,
the screen driver seems to be an intel driver. (There is a combined
NVidia and Intel screen card.) It is also possible to change the
screen backlight by using the buttons.

Searching on the web I found that I could add "nomodeset" to the
kernel command line. Doing this stabilizes the screen, but the
control of the screen backlight disappears.

If I in addition add "acpi_osi=Linux" and "acpi_backlight=vendor", the
backlight-control app seems to be back, but there is no reaction to
any changes. "ls /sys/class/backlight" now shows the name ideapad.

Along the way to the current workaround, I have had bumblebee and some
other software installed and automatically removed as it was not
  needed.

I believe this applies to other distributions as well.

Numbered questions and answers (found under "We also need:" in th
  1) Output from "lsb_release -rd":
  Description: Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS
  Release: 14.04

  2) Outut from "apt-cache policy linux*":
  see attached file "policy"

  3) What I expect to happen:
a. That the screen would be stabile from the start of the installation
b. That the backlight control would be available from the start of the
installation and not disappear.

  4) What happened instead:
a. The screen was "shaking" from the start. (Not a stabile image at all.)
b. After adding a fix (see above) the screen became stabile but the screen
backlight control disappeared. No remedy has been found for this.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1557924] Re: Machine fails to resume from suspend

2016-03-16 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Johann Götz, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu
better.

In order to allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue, at your
earliest convenience, could you please test the latest upstream kernel
available from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D ? Please
keep in mind the following:
1) The one to test is at the very top line at the top of the page (not the
daily folder).
2) The release names are irrelevant.
3) The folder time stamps aren't indicative of when the kernel actually was
released upstream.
4) Install instructions are available at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds .

If testing on your main install would be inconvenient, one may:
1) Install Ubuntu to a different partition and then test this there.
2) Backup, or clone the primary install.

If the latest kernel did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't
boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue
to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue.
Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version
specifically you tested. If this issue is fixed in the mainline kernel, please
add the following tags by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil
icon, next to the word Tags, located at the bottom of the report description:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Where X, and Y are the first two numbers of the kernel version, and Z is
the release candidate number if it exists.

If the mainline kernel does not fix the issue, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Please note, an error to install the kernel does not fit the criteria of
kernel-bug-exists-upstream.

Also, you don't need to apport-collect further unless specifically
requested to do so.

Once testing of the latest upstream kernel is complete, please mark this
report Status Confirmed. Please let us know your results.

Thank you for your understanding.

Every now and then when having bt mouse/keyboard connected - you will
see when selecting a text box there is a repeating character (there is
no specific character, but always repeats)

It seems to be related somehow to bt devices disconnecting
the only cure is a reboot

This was reproduced by turning off the keyboard while holding down a
key. We suspect the key up event is never delivered. This mimics the
case where the BT connection drops off momentarily or perhaps an event
is missed over the BT connection.

Bug description:
Every now and then when having bt mouse/keyboard connected - you will
see when selecting a text box there is a repeating character (there is
no specific character, but always repeats)

It seems to be related somehow to bt devices disconnecting
the only cure is a reboot

This was reproduced by turning off the keyboard while holding down a
key. We suspect the key up event is never delivered. This mimics the
case where the BT connection drops off momentarily or perhaps an event
is missed over the BT connection.
