[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1594023] Re: Poweroff or reboot hangs. Laptop won't shutdown. 16.04

2016-11-27 Thread VinDSL
Kernel 4.9-rc7 fixed it !!!

I waited until the Ubu Mainline kernel was available, just to make sure.

LINK: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.9-rc7/

@Daniele ViganĂ², thanks for all the effort(s) you went to, over in the
mailing lists and bugzilla, to make this happen.

Good job !

Title:
Poweroff or reboot hangs. Laptop won't shutdown. 16.04

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
This is about a fresh Ubuntu 16.04 install on a new laptop (asus
x540sa). After pressing the shutdown button in the start menu; the
shutdown procedure starts and in the final splash screen the system
just hangs. Tried a second time by pressing Esc once the splash screen
showed up and I saw that it reaches the line "Reached target shutdown"
and just stops there, no matter how long I leave it there the machine
  won't turn off.

I also tried a Kubuntu 16.04 fresh install on the same machine and it
hanged too at the final splash screen where the pulsating logo
stopped. Then I tried with Esc only to see the exact same line in the
  end.

The issue seems to affect lately quite many users as shown by the
google results of the past month / week or so.

I have also tried shutting down from the console with shutdown -and
all the parameters after that suggested online- and sudo poweroff but
unfortunately they didn't do the trick. The exact same situation
  occurred.

Unmounting the swap as suggested online doesn't work.

Also rebooting the system is not working either due to the same issue.

So right now the only way for me to poweroff the machine is to press
the power button on the keyboard continuously.

  Reproducible: Always

  Steps to Reproduce:
  1.Install OS
  2.Do something, anything or nothing
  3.Try to shutdown or reboot

  Actual Results:
The computer is not shutting down: "Reached target shutdown" and hangs there.

  Expected Results:
  Powering off the machine.

For what it's worth, closing the lid won't suspend the system, but
using the menu buttons for suspension will do it.

Title:
mtu size - auto setting for wifi not loads some webpages initially

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Webpages like economictimes.indiatimes.com , opening of inner links in
ndtv.com , at times dinamalar.com etc.,. did not open and mostly
resulted in request time out. It opened after 10 or 15 minutes gap
when refreshed. Changing the dns in netgear wifi modem to google dns,
verisign dns, open dns or auto obtain dns did not solve the problem.

Atlast found out that Wifi Network MTU size Auto as default was
  causing this request time out.

Now after putting a MTU size value manually for wifi network lower
than the MTU size value configured in wifi modem, all the above
  webpages opens.

  Presently using Ubuntu 16.10

Kindly make auto MTU size setting for wifi network to first probe mtu
size of wifi modem and set a slightly lower value thant that as MTU.

Reporting this to make Ubuntu user friendly even for newbies.

I am using Ubuntu for more than 6 years.

Title:
mtu size - auto setting for wifi not loads some webpages initially

Title:
mtu size - auto setting for wifi not loads some webpages initially

Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1590844] Re: Bluetooth headset not working with Meizu Pro 5 Ubuntu Edition

2016-11-27 Thread Seth
I agree. This is unacceptable and needs to be addressed. I've tried the
latest Meizu Android firmware as a system.img without success. I believe
this is a Bluez issue with 15.04 however the lack of feedback is
concerning.
We need to prioritize this.

  7. Manual reconnection via phone works (shows Jabra BT250 as being connected)
but ignores the device

Same behaviour with Audi car kit (Audi A3, 2012 model)

  EXPECTED:
I expect that the blue tooth kits work similar to my Seat Alhambra (also 2012
model) where the blue tooth pairing etc. works great (except some bugs which
are already filed).

  ACTUAL:
No connection to the blue tooth device

  VERSIONS:
  OS-Build-Number: 25
  Ubuntu-Image: 20150825.1

  POSSIBLE ROOT CAUSE:
Is this issue also solved as soon as bluez5 is implemented? When will this be?

  [NVM Express])

For whatever reason, I sometimes (often) loose connection to the
device, causing the entire system to stop working until a powercycle
has been completed. I can go a full day without having the problem -
Just as I can have an entire night of the system just refusing to be
stable for long enough to be usable.

I've tried with official kernels and mainline kernels of 4.8 and 4.9
versions of the kernel, but all show the exact same problem at one
  point or another.

I'm aware that this COULD be a hardware-related issue, but have no
real way to be certain at this point. The system is a brand new Lenovo
  ThinkPad T460s.

Dmesg always shows the following few lines, in association with the
  error:

mtu size - auto setting for wifi not loads some webpages initially

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1423796] Re: Unable to mount lvmcache root device at boot time

2016-11-27 Thread Astara
@George:
George Moutsopoulos (gmoutso) wrote on 2015-04-29:

> sudo echo "dm_bufio" >> /etc/initramfs-tools/module
---
Not exactly related to the original bug, but wanted to address a boo-boo in the
above.
sudo echo "string" won't use root's access/permissions to write to the files
when using the shell-redirection operators '>' or '>>'. sudo will execute
'echo' with root privs, and that will echo "dm_cache" (et al.), however, that
output is redirected by the *SHELL* (running as
"whoever is running the shell") -- usually the user.

To get around this problem (and not saying there might not be any easier ways,
as this seemed a bit roundabout to get what I wanted (have root write the
output to "wherever"), I used
"dd", as in:

echo "dm_cache"|sudo dd of=destination status=none

 or to append:

echo "dm_cache"|sudo dd status=none oflag=append conv=notrunc of=/etc
/initramfs-tools/modules

or to do all at once:

(echo dm_cache
echo dm_cache_mq
echo dm_persistent_data
echo dm_bufio)|sudo dd status=none oflag=append conv=notrunc
of=/initramfs-tools/modules

I wanted to write a single "char" to a file in /proc/sys/vm
(drop_caches).

Perhaps needless to say, I put it in a script file to save on typing.
:-)

Bug description:
I'm experimenting with Vivid Vervet on a virtual machine and tried a
new LVM feature, lvmcache. I made a cache for the root file system,
rebuilt the initrd and rebooted the VM.

At boot time, the system failed to activate the root LV. After some
investigation, I found out, it's because the initrd is missing some
essential stuff needed for activating a cached LV.

The initrd was missing the dm-cache module. I regenerated the initrd
with explicitly listing dm-cache in /etc/initramfs-tools/modules, but
the system still can't boot up, because now it is missing the
  /usr/sbin/cache_check utility.

As SSDs are becoming more and more common, I think it will be common
to use them as cache for root file systems, thus it is mandatory to
make sure that an initrd can mount an lvmcached root device when
necessary, preferably without /etc/initramfs-tools/modules and other
  manual initrd hacking.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1423796] Re: Unable to mount lvmcache root device at boot time

2016-11-27 Thread JĂ©rĂ´me Poulin
That new file could be added to the thin-provisioning-tools which would
trigger an initramfs update.

I forgot to remove cache_dump, cache_restore and cache_metadata_size
which are not needed to boot.

I'm experimenting with Vivid Vervet on a virtual machine and tried a

rebuilt the initrd and rebooted the VM.

At boot time, the system failed to activate the root LV. After some
investigation, I found out, it's because the initrd is missing some
essential stuff needed for activating a cached LV.

The initrd was missing the dm-cache module. I regenerated the initrd
with explicitly listing dm-cache in /etc/initramfs-tools/modules, but
the system still can't boot up, because now it is missing the
  /usr/sbin/cache_check utility.

As SSDs are becoming more and more common, I think it will be common
to use them as cache for root file systems, thus it is mandatory to
make sure that an initrd can mount an lvmcached root device when
necessary, preferably without /etc/initramfs-tools/modules and other
  manual initrd hacking.

2016-11-27 Thread Sean
Hello Jean,

I have had many difficulties trying to find the right match between a distro,
driver and this card.
I have finally settled with debian jessie (linux 3.16) and this easy
installable driver : https://github.com/tobiasBora/MT7630E_3.16
I am using xfce, installed blueman and pulse audio and te bluetooth module for
pulse audio.
Now I can use my bluetooth audio receiver i connected to my hifi system.
All is working fine now except that wifi and bluetooth interfere with each
others' bandwidth, for instance when I update a package or watch a video, the
music played through bluetooth just stutters or even becomes silent. But I
guess that's just a low quality peice of hardware in the end.

So does that mean exec calls from dasdfmt that failed becuase the user
account has no (typical) shell specified?
As in, is there something that can be improved in the s390-tools source
code to explicitely use /bin/sh for example to mitigate this?

changing the user to run with bash worked around the issue. so i have my

Horum, I am pondering how can the route cuase be further debuged for this
one. This is still reproducible, after the user has a shell set, right?

looking at the syslog i can see a strange message that only comes out when i
am having this issue:

you can see that the 199 is not format and can't be formatted...
a workaround is to vary the disk offline and then online again.
this time it will start ok and you can format it and work with it.

  for example:
 vmcp link '*' 199 199
 echo 1 > /sys/bus/ccw/devices/0.0.0199/online
 /sbin/chzdev dasd-eckd 0199 -e -p

The firmware of the usbduxsigma (alongside with the usbduxsigma.c) was

However, as a quick fix could you also apply the patch to the package

I'm the maintainer of both the firmware and the drivers.

This affects both 32 and 64 bit distros.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1575437] Re: Asus ZenBook UX501VW frequently hangs during boot under Ubuntu 16.04

2016-11-27 Thread DAG
My understanding is that this bug will soon expire because it's still
marked incomplete and appears abandoned.

Are we taking this route because there is a workaround and in any case
it should be filed differently than it has?

I do hope the workaround works - but cannot test it until another maybe
couple weeks when I get the Asus laptop in question.

Bug description:
A fresh install of Ubuntu Gnome 16.04 on an Asus ZenBook UX501VW hangs
during boot, approximately 80% to 90% of the time... occasionally it
manages to complete the startup for no discrenable reason, at which
point the fan will run at full speed nonstop (very loud) until the
machine is powered down. Due to the information from
  , I installed the wily 4.3.5 kernel (replacing 4.4.0)
  from ,
which appears to work perfectly... no bootup hangs or odd fan
  behaviour

The hang occurs shortly after providing the disk decryption key (I
opted for full-disk encryption during installation). The issue occurs
frequently when booting Ubuntu Gnome from a flash drive using "try
before installation" mode, however, so I'm confident that it's not
  actually encryption related.

I am *not* using any proprietary drivers (no nvidia, etc.).

I had to post this somewhere. After screwing with damn near every
distribution I could find and failing on every one for various reasons I
discovered that my shit USB card reader was to blame for almost every
issue I have been having. I haven't been able to I stall any
distribution and after disconnecting the card reader I can now I stall
whatever I want. Hope this helps someone.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1437492] Re: boot stalls on USB detection errors

2016-11-27 Thread Dennis Woycheshen
I had to post this somewhere. After screwing with damn near every
distribution I could find and failing on every one for various reasons I
discovered that my shit USB card reader was to blame for almost every
issue I have been having. I haven't been able to I stall any
distribution and after disconnecting the card reader I can now I stall
whatever I want. Hope this helps someone.
