[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1687255] [NEW] cannot install driver after installing os

2017-04-29 Thread opensas
Public bug reported:

I've just installed Ubuntu 17.04 from usb
I go to additional drivers
And select "Using Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driver source from
bcmxl-kernel-source (propietary)
Click Apply Changes
Enter my pasword

But then, the same dialog appears showing the driver is not in use, and
the wifi won't work.

The same procedure worked ok from the live cd

Have been experiencing this from version 15.04 onwards, version 14.04
seemed to work fine.

I found this workaround asking as askubuntu
(https://askubuntu.com/questions/632907/cannot-use-wifi-broadcom-802-11
-alternative-driver-in-ubuntu-15-04)

>From the installation media install
pool/restricted/b/bcmwl/bcmwl-kernel-source_6.30.223.271+bdcom-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb
pool/main/d/dkms/dkms_2.3-3_all.deb
with dpkg -i *.deb

I guess that running it from the Additional drivers dialog should be
giving some error...

C920 Hardware Mute is set but not being unset.

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  Description: Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS
  Release: 16.04

  What you expected to happen:
I mute the microphone and unmute it and the webcam should get audio in.

  What happened instead:
The webcam stays muted (on the hardware side)

  Description:
I have a Logitech C920 webcam with built in microphone. If I plug in the USB
the microphone works correctly. I can restart the computer and turn it on and
everything works correctly.

However, if I mute the video camera's microphone and then unmute it. I
cannot get any audio to come in via the camera.

The only way I can get it to work is to unplug the USB for 10 to 30
seconds and re plug it back in.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1634881] Re: Installation/Live-System freezes on Splash screen

2017-04-29 Thread DasJott
That actually worked. So does that mean, that the Intel® HD Graphics
5300 (Broadwell GT2) is not supported by Ubuntu anymore?

  Installation/Live-System freezes on Splash screen

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
A USB Stick prepared with 16.04.1 no matter whether "Try Ubuntu" or
"Install" is chosen, it freezes on splash-Screen.

With "quiet splash" removed, I get the output on the picture attached.

In the last line it says: "BUG Can't handle kernel"

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1686053] Re: package linux-headers-4.10.0-20 (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: unable to open '/usr/src/linux-headers-4.10.0-20/arch/x86/um/os-Linux/Makefile.dpkg-new':

2017-04-29 Thread Matthew Langner
Had purged all packages to do with linux-headers-4.10.0-20 before I
competed the above commands.

Install the package again 'linux-headers-4.10.0-20'. It also installs
'linux-headers-4.10.0-20-lowlatency' and 'linux-
headers-4.10.0-20-generic' . Both install but linux-
headers-4.10.0-20-lowlatency doesn't log in to the desktop and puts it
into low graphics mode.

linux-headers-4.10.0-20 now installs and logs into the desktop but the
ethernet doesn't work.

All work fine in linux-headers-4.10.0-19.

I'm unsure if this means that I should change the status to confirmed or
not as this may be a new bug log?

Title:
psmouse serio1: Explorer Mouse at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost
  synchronization, throwing 3 bytes away.

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  353/5000
  Hello,
Randomly the touchpad pointer moves to one end of the screen, and we have
found that when it does message appears in dmseg:

psmouse serio1: Explorer Mouse at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost
  synchronization, throwing 3 bytes away.

Sometimes it happens after 10 minutes of use, sometimes it happens after 3 or
4 hours.
We have tested several computers with touchpad "Hantick", that use the both,
the evdev library and the libinput library. It always happens randomly.

  Thanks,

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 830915] Re: [Oneiric] Error during kernel upgrade: Could not locate dkms.conf file

2017-04-29 Thread spike speigel
Ok...For anyone with a Dell XPS 13 9360 who experiences an issue like
this:

So I decided to purge and reinstall DKMS:

sudo apt-get purge dkms

BUT that removes all the following:

dkms hid-multitouch-dkms intel-hid-dkms intel-vbutton-dkms oem-audio-
hda-daily-dkms virtualbox-dkms

I purged, then went in and manually deleted /var/ib/dkms and all its
folders. I thought I could just copy/paste that line above with apt-get
install to reinstall everything. I was wrong.

I have a Dell XPS 13 9360 Developer Edition laptop which has some Dell
provided driver kernel modules.

oem-audio-hda-daily-dkms was available on their update repo. That was
installed by apt-get just fine.

hid-multitouch-dkms intel-hid-dkms intel-vbutton-dkms were NOT available
in their update repo. I had to pull those from the Dell OEM Recovery
ISO they offer of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

I installed them using dpkg.

I then found the following to rebuild kernel modules:

ls /var/lib/initramfs-tools | \
sudo xargs -n1 /usr/lib/dkms/dkms_autoinstaller start

All appears fine again, but what a pain!!!

I'm seeing this in 16.04.2 LTS.

During dist-upgrade I see:

I too have been having VBox issues, such as locking up my system.

Did not happen with previous (4.10.0.14.16) kernel. Only after update

a new bug report, and include version numbers of 'grub2' and 'zfs-

Bug description:
  [Impact]
Installs over ZFS where a ZFS disk is expected to be used as a root device.

  [Test case]
  - Run update-grub on a system with a ZFS root filesystem.

  [Regression Potential]
Installs relying on the current broken behavior to avoid listing other
operating systems in grub menu may find that new entries are added.

  ---

  update-grub runs /usr/sbin/grub-probe

Without libzfslinux support compiled in, /usr/sbin/grub-probe runs
["zpool", "status", poolname] to find out ZFS info.

zpool responds with device names as used at (I think!) pool creation
time. Often, this is /dev/disk/by-id/... names, without the path.

grub-probe then parses the output, and takes the names of devices, and
if they do not start with a "/", it prepends "/dev/".

It then tests the existence of the path name of the device. it fails.

  grub-probe then returns something like

/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: failed to get canonical path of `/dev
  /ata-ST31000333AS_-part1'.

The actual path is of course /dev/disk/by-
  id/ST31000333AS_-part1

It can prepend smarter than "/dev" or it can understand ZFS natively,
  to fix the problem.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1680904] Re: zesty unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference

2017-04-29 Thread Sam Van den Eynde
I have implemented the workaround from #7
(https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=99295#c22) using the
attached patchfile on kernel 4.10.0-20.

My system crashed consistently when doing a resource heavy export job on
a VirtualBox Windows 10 guest. First try after patching this no longer
is the case.

Steps taken to build and install the kernel:

cd /working/directory
apt build-dep linux-image-$(uname -r)
apt source linux-image-$(uname -r)
cd linux-4.10.0/
patch -p1 < /your/patchfile/location/patchfile
debian/rules startnewrelease
fakeroot debian/rules clean
fakeroot debian/rules binary-headers binary-generic binary-perarch
cd ..
apt install $PWD/linux-[hit]*21.23*deb

** Patch added: "https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=99295#c22;

zesty unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Upgraded to zesty about a week ago. Ran into this on latest kernel.
(during high load, nothing in particular seems to cause it to happen).

Did not happen with previous (4.10.0.14.16) kernel. Only after update
to 4.10.0.15.17, has happened about 3 times since then (or other
crashes), this is the one I could capture.

kern.log entries below. Let me know if you need anything else from me.

Hello, after experimenting few days ago with Ubuntu 16.04.1, 16.10 and
17.04, among other problems I found that touchpad and Fn keys (all
except volume control) doesn't work on my brand new ASUS G752VS.

It is very hard even to try Ubuntu 16.10 and 17.04 because of the
missing mouse pointer. This problem must be related to a video driver
because if after installing one is capable to install Nvidia drivers -
problem is solved. This problem doesn't exist both while trying and
  installing Ubuntu 16.04.1!

I'm currently on Windows 10, and this bug report is made from Ubuntu
  16.04.1 LiveCD.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1653456] Re: ASUS G752VS: Touchpad and Fn keys not working (Ubuntu 16.04.1/16.10/17.04)

2017-04-29 Thread aljosa
Hello,
yes there is something about i2c and ELAN touchpad but I don't have a clue what
does it mean.
Please find attached file with output of ~$ cat /proc/interrupts

ASUS G752VS: Touchpad and Fn keys not working (Ubuntu

Status in Linux:

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Non-Optimus laptop ASUS G752VS-GC063D-CST256.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1615774] Re: iwlwifi queue stuck, Microcode SW error detected, "ieee80211 phy0: Hardware restart was requested

2017-04-29 Thread Heinz Werner
Hello altogether, I am affected too. From time to time the same error
occurs, showing the "queue stuck" and "Hardware restart" messages, while
WiFi-connection is not working. It happens then in a loop. I am not
running Ubuntu, I am running aptosid with "4.10.0-8.slh.1-aptosid-amd64
#1 SMP PREEMPT aptosid 4.10-13 (2017-04-06) x86_64 GNU/Linux". So this
could be a *linux-generic* problem:

I have this issue since several releases, but I don't remember exactly, when it
started.

***
But today I got aware, of how to "fix" it... I was running a USB3-connected
harddisk,
and when I disconnect it, problems immediately gone!!!
***

Stalled downloads continue, WiFi is working flawless again, as soon the
drive is gone.

And as soon I connect USB3-HDD again (just connect, you even don't have
to mount a filesystem, the WLAN-error-loop gets me again!

So I see a connection toe USB3-hardware-internals? Maybe a hardware-
problem, triggered somehow, or something with USB-stack... but I don't
understand, how it can influence WiFi.

I am running Linux on a Dell Latitude E7450. I have some kernel-
parameters in use, maybe they have influence too, so for your
information:

$ cat /proc/cmdline
BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-4.10.0-8.slh.1-aptosid-amd64
root=/dev/mapper/MyNiceNode-lroot ro i8042.nopnp atkbd.reset pcie_aspm=force
nmi_watchdog=0 libata.force=noncq video=SVIDEO-1:d

The WiFi-card is a:

$ lspci|grep -i wire
02:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 7265 (rev 59)

And in more detail with lshw-excerpt:

The USB3-HDD is directly connected to a USB-interface at the back of the
laptop, via a IcyBox IB-AC703-U3 interface.
When I run (the same) HDDs within a HardiskDock connected via esata, I don't
have WiFi-restarts either (Latitude E7450 sadly lacks direct esata-ports, so I
have a DockingStation to make use of esata).

Maybe someone can confirm having connected some USB stuff to the systems, when
the problems pop up?

And (maybe) not directly connected to this issue, but I experienced more
weird USB(3)-related phenomens, I may describe later, but all resulting
in bus-resets so devices are "gone". I miss my esata, that was stable
with multiple-disk-IO.

However, I hope, I can help with my input!

Regards

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1653456] Re: ASUS G752VS: Touchpad and Fn keys not working (Ubuntu 16.04.1/16.10/17.04)

2017-04-29 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
alijosa,

Originally it uses hid-multitouch:
[ 101.082929] input: ELAN1203:00 04F3:3043 Touchpad as
/devices/pci:00/:00:15.1/i2c_designware.1/i2c-1/i2c-ELAN1203:00/0018:04F3:3043.0007/input/input11

Mouse [ELAN1203:00 04F3:3043] on i2c-ELAN1203:00
[ 102.138959] Linux video capture interface: v2.00

Now it uses elan-i2c:
[4.599028] elan_i2c i2c-ELAN1203:00: Elan Touchpad: Module ID: 0x0040,
Firmware: 0x0005, Sample: 0x0010, IAP: 0x000e
[4.599163] input: Elan Touchpad as
/devices/pci:00/:00:15.1/i2c_designware.1/i2c-7/i2c-ELAN1203:00/input/input15

Is there any interrupts generated under /proc/interrupts?

Scott Hayes,
According to comment #50, it works on G752VS. You probably need to file a
separate bug.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1627214] Re: Random display flickering on Kernel 4.8 with dual-screen

2017-04-29 Thread Antonis Pappas
This bug still hasn't been fixed 7 months later. I just switched to the
hwe kernel of 16.04 and I am likewise affected.

This may have been mentioned in upstream but the flickering happens only
when framebuffer hasn't changed. If you constantly move your mouse,
it'll stop.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1687130] Re: NFS client input/output-error on kernel >=4.9

2017-04-29 Thread Hedgehog
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected zesty

** Description changed:

I'm experiencing input/output errors on mounting NFS-shares, starting
  from kernel 4.9 and above.

No errors logged to syslog, but the system reports IO-errors when
reading from the mount after only a few seconds. Doesn't matter which
program that are accessing the disk.

My problems started after upgrading to ubuntu 17.04, but I have narrowed
it down to being present from ubuntu kernel 4.9 and above by installing
kernels from the ubuntu kernel ppa - i.e. when downgrading to latest
4.8-kernel from the PPA, NFS starts working as expected even on ubuntu
17.04. So it's definetely kernel related.

Probably not a hardware error either as the bug is present when NFS is
mounted over both eth0 and wlan0.

Only special thing in my setup is that NFS is mounted over an ssh-
  tunnel.

The NFS server runs an completely up to date ubuntu 16.04 LTS install.
