Just a comment that I have observed this bug as well, on an X220 T. The
test kernel from comment #11 also appears to resolve the problem (so
far). I do not have any external USB controllers attached, though, so
I'm not sure what the failure path was.

Can you test it by only blacklisting nouveau? i915 should still be loaded.
You can do that by adding "blacklist=nouveau modprobe.blacklist=nouveau" to
your kernel parameter.

With disk encryption enabled is more of an issue, because the Nvidia
drivers need something on the encrypted partition and thus fails to
boot.
The only kernel I have successfully booted after 4.8 was 4.13. I am
currently running 4.13 with disk encryption, Nvidia drivers from the PPA
and the

When I try to add nomodeset on the 4.10.0-35-generic kernel, my laptop freezes
on the disk encryption screen. I tried it with a usb3 dock and hdmi monitor
attached and without any peripherals.

I made Wifi work with kernel 4.11 again by removing the package bcmwl-
kernel-source and installing firmware-b43-installer.
But I'm not sure if this is just a workaround or the proper solution.
