  Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - many LENOVO laptops models

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Hi all,

  Basically on Lenovo Y50-70 after installing Ubuntu 17.10, many users
  reported a corrupted BIOS.

  It's not possible to save new settings in BIOS anymore and after
  rebooting, the system starts with the old settings.

  Moreover (and most important) USB booting is not possible anymore
  since USB is not recognized. It's very serious, since our machines do
  not have a CDROM.

  Lenovo forums at the moment are full of topics regading this issue.

  Thank you!!

Title:
  Computer goes to sleep mode after a gaming session

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  My computer is configured to go to sleep mode after 2 hours of inactivity.
  I played a game for more than two hours on Steam, using only the gamepad.
  I exit the game.

  Actual result: the computer goes immediately to sleep mode
  Expected result: the computer stays awake.

  My guess is that either Steam or the game locked the wake-up mode, and
  when I exited the game, the lock was released. Meanwhile the 2 hours
  timer was not stopped and instead was running and expired after 2
  hours, leading to a sleep mode switch when the lock was released.

  I don't really know which system module (kernel? gnome?) manages that
  specific power management use case so I leave the package to blank for
  now.

  Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - many LENOVO laptops models

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Hi all,

  Basically on Lenovo Y50-70 after installing Ubuntu 17.10, many users
  reported a corrupted BIOS.

  It's not possible to save new settings in BIOS anymore and after
  rebooting, the system starts with the old settings.

  Moreover (and most important) USB booting is not possible anymore
  since USB is not recognized. It's very serious, since our machines do
  not have a CDROM.

  Lenovo forums at the moment are full of topics regading this issue.

  Thank you!!

Bug description:
  [Impact]
  A signficant performance gain can be achieved with the iperf benchmark by
allowing the ixgbe driver to take advantage of PCIe Relaxed Ordering, as
observed on the HiSilicon D05 system.

  [Test Case]
  Setup two servers with dual-port PCIe ixgbe cards, connected back-to-back.

  = server =
  taskset -c 0-15 iperf -s -B 192.168.80.11 &
  taskset -c 16-31 iperf -s -B 192.168.90.11 &

  = client =
  taskset -c 0-15 iperf -c 192.168.80.11 -i 3 -t 600 -P 8 &
  taskset -c 16-31 iperf -c 192.168.90.11 -i 3 -t 600 -P 8 &

  Without these patches, we observe an aggregate performance of 8.54
  Gbit/sec. With these patches, we observe an aggregate performance of
  18.82 Gbit/sec.

  [Regression Risk]
  The following risk assessment applies to both artful and zesty - but note
that the bulk of these changes are *already in artful*. The proposed SRU for
artful would just allow an additional driver to take advantage of it. For
zesty, an SRU would need to both introduce this feature and enable it for both
the cxgb4 and ixgbe drivers.

  The patchset is careful to only enable Relaxed Ordering if advertised
  up through the root port. However, it is possible that enabling RO on
  hardware that supports it could actually regress performance, or that
  there is hw out there that advertises RO, but has bugs in the
  implementation. The patch series includes quirks for HW where RO is
  advertised but known to have issues[*] - but this list maybe
  incomplete. This would only impact devices w/ drivers that take
  advantage of RO - currently cxgb4 and (not yet upstream) ixgbe.

  Also, there is a possibility of a crash caused by a coding error. One
  such issue has already been found and fixed upstream [**], and is part
  of this series.

  The risk of both of these regressions is reduced by the fact that this
  code is upstream, and has therefore gotten a lot more testing that has
  not resulted in regressions reports.

Bug description:
  Distribution: Ubuntu 16.04 x64 (Flavour: KDE Neon User Edition 5.10)

  linux-image-4.4.0-81-generic appears to contain a regression, probably
  related to the CVE-2017-1000364 fix backport / patch.

  Using this kernel, the Oracle Java browser plugin always crashes
  during stack-related actions on initialization. This means, the plugin
  completely stopped working.

  It works perfectly fine in linux-image-4.4.0-79-generic (vurlerable to
CVE-2017-1000364) as well as linux-image-4.11.6-041106-generic, which also
contains a fix for CVE-2017-1000364.

  uname -a:

  I tested Oracle Java 1.8 u131 as well as 1.6 u64 in Firefox 51.0.1 as
  well as Iceweasel / Firefox/3.5.16 in a chroot.

  Using linux-image-4.4.0-81-generic it crashes in all combinations
  while with both other kernels it works.

  I was not able to obtain any detailed crash information from Firefox 51.0.1,
but Iceweasel 3.5.16 crashed completely, allowing me to obtain a stack trace
which shows the relation to stack operations performed by the plugin, even
without proper debug symbols:

  > (gdb) bt full

  I first assumed a bug in the Java plugin, but it works fine in Linux 4.11.6.

  The crash will be triggered by any applet, for example the test applet at:

  * https://java.com/en/download/installed8.jsp

  I'm running the Ubuntu 16.04 based KDE Neon distribution which somehow
apparently does not allow me to use apport to report this bug:

  > $ LANG= apport-cli linux-image-4.4.0-81-generic
  >

and try again.

  If someone can tell me how to get apport working for this package, I
  can use it to collect additional information, but (unfortunately?) the
  problem should be fairly easy to reproduce...

applied them) if you use the two links you provided in your post #64
above. Did you try it? So that makes me wonder what @kaihengfeng used
for his latest build and maybe that's why it does not work for you?

  Touchpad stops working after reboot on Apollo Lake

Status in Linux:

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  On the Jumper EZBook 3 Pro (V4) laptop, using an Apollo Lake N3450
  processor, if you install Ubuntu 17.10 (or less) with isorespin and
  use rEFInd as bootloader (this is the only way to get linux booting on
  this laptop) everything works out of the box, but after a reboot or
  two the touchpad stops working. Both in Ubuntu and Windows 10. The
  only way to restore functionality is to boot from usb key ubuntu 17.10
  respined, or disassemble laptop and detach-reattach battery cable.

  There has to be a bug in the kernel. Any way to avoid this?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1734147] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - many LENOVO laptops models

2017-12-01 Thread Alexis Rico
Workaround for reference to install Windows with the broken BIOS.

If you try to install through PXE Windows you'll see that it errors when
trying to bcdedit the entry to BIOS and the process fails.

A nasty workaround that works is:

- Create a raw Virtual Disk that points to the physical drive
- Install Windows until the first restart through VirtualBox (it extracts only
the wim files and creates the EFI BCD).
- Finish the installation on the Lenovo

Also I recommend you to leave rEFInd as default EFI entry (EFI/BOOT) so
that you can launch bootable USBs using the novo button when PXE fails
and defaults to rEFInd.

I hope either Lenovo or Ubuntu releases a proper fix but at least now
I've found a way to Install Linuxes, Windows and Boot USBs with the
corrupted BIOS.

  Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - many LENOVO laptops models

Bug description:
  Hi all,

  Basically on Lenovo Y50-70 after installing Ubuntu 17.10, many users
  reported a corrupted BIOS.

  It's not possible to save new settings in BIOS anymore and after
  rebooting, the system starts with the old settings.

  Moreover (and most important) USB booting is not possible anymore
  since USB is not recognized. It's very serious, since our machines do
  not have a CDROM.

  Lenovo forums at the moment are full of topics regading this issue.

  Thank you!!

  3. After creating some bcache devices and rebooting
/dev/bcache/by-uuid/ -> ../../bcacheN
  symlinks point to the current bcache device which is caching the dev.uuid
found after creating a backing device.

  4. /dev/bcache/by-uuid does not exist and there are not symlinks
  underneath

  It appears that since the initramfs loads the bcache module which probes and
finds all of the cache devices and backing devices then once the rootfs is
mounted and udev gets to run, the bcache kernel module does not emit the
CACHED_UUID value into the environment if the underlying devices are already
registered.

  In dmesg, one can see that prior to mounting the rootfs, we see bcache
  register events:

  [5.333973] bcache: register_bdev() registered backing device vdb2
  [5.354138] bcache: register_bdev() registered backing device vdb4
  [5.365665] bcache: register_bdev() registered backing device vdb3
  [5.397720] bcache: bch_journal_replay() journal replay done, 0 keys in 1
entries, seq 1
  [5.428683] bcache: register_cache() registered cache device vdb1

  then rootfs ismounted and systemd starts systemd-udev

  [9.350889] systemd[1]: Listening on udev Kernel Socket.

  And then the coldplug replay of kernel events triggers
/lib/udev/rules.d/69-bcache.rules
  which invokes /lib/udev/bcache-register which writes the device name
(/dev/vdb1 or /dev/bcache0) into /sys/fs/bcache/register and results is the
bcache kernel driver attempting to register the block device. However, there
is already a bcache device associated already and registration fails

  [   11.173141] bcache: register_bcache() error opening /dev/vdb2: device
already registered
  [   11.184617] bcache: register_bcache() error opening /dev/vdb3: device
already registered
  [   11.199130] bcache: register_bcache() error opening /dev/vdb1: device
already registered
  [   11.271694] bcache: register_bcache() error opening /dev/vdb4: device
already registered

  The problem then is that only a kernel call to bch_cached_dev_run()
  which happens like this:

  bcache_register()
register_bdev()
  bch_cached_dev_run()
kobject_uevent_env(_to_dev(d->disk)->kobj, KOBJ_CHANGE, env);

  where env includes:
  "DRIVER=bcache",
  kasprintf(GFP_KERNEL, "CACHED_UUID=%pU", dc->sb.uuid),
  NULL,
  NULL,
  };

  Since that event is not emitted for any previously registered device,
  then the symlink will not be created.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1723736] Re: Touchpad not detected - Lenovo ideapad 320-15IKB

2017-12-01 Thread Bastian Boese
Ok I tried the -proposed kernel for xenial and artful.

Problem is, I'm using zesty. I installed the -proposed kernels and
headers, and after a reboot neither my touchpad nor my wifi was working.
I admit that I am a linux beginner, so I'm not sure if it is even
possible to use those xenial and artful kernels with my zesty Ubuntu.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1729145] Re: /dev/bcache/by-uuid links not created after reboot

2017-12-01 Thread Ryan Harper
Untested patch. Hoping to convey the change that's needed.

- decouple emitting a cached_dev CHANGE uevent which includes dev.uuid and
dev.label
   from bch_cached_dev_run() which only happens when a bcacheX device is bound
to the
   actual backing block device (bcache0 -> vdb)

- update bch_cached_dev_run() to invoke bch_cached_dev_emit_change() as needed;
no functional
  code path changes here

- Modify register_bcache to detect a re-registering of a bcache cached_dev, and
in that case
  call bcache_cached_dev_emit_change() to emit the uevent needed to trigger
SYMLINK generation

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1733864] Comment bridged from LTC Bugzilla

2017-12-01 Thread bugproxy
--- Comment From jos...@br.ibm.com 2017-12-01 12:59 EDT---
Hi Kleber,

The error KVM: Failed to create TCE64 table for liobn 0x... is harmless
so let's forget it.

I tried hard to reproduce the error without success so far, so I'm going
to ask you another favor. Could you generate a trace log and send me the
results?

# creates a file with * inside, it means that we want to capture all traceable
events (since I don't have suspects for now).
$ echo "*" > trace_all

# runs QEMU with the extra parameter:
qemu-system-ppc64le  -trace events=trace_all 2> log_all.txt

After you hit the issue, please gzip that log_all.txt (it's huge) and
send it to me.

Thank you

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1734327] Re: Kernel panic on a nfsroot system

2017-12-01 Thread Joseph Salisbury
I wonder if this bug could be caused by a SAUCE patch, which is why it
doesn't happen with the upstream kernels.

Can you see if this bug happens in either the Zesty kernel or Artful
-proposed

Zesty:
https://launchpad.net/~canonical-kernel-team/+archive/ubuntu/ppa/+build/13757667
Artful -proposed:
https://launchpad.net/~canonical-kernel-team/+archive/ubuntu/ppa/+build/13757328

With these kernels, you need to install both the linux-image and linux-
image-extra .deb packages.

Title:
  Kernel panic on a nfsroot system

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress
Status in linux source package in Artful:
  In Progress

Bug description:
  Summary:
  Kernel panic occurs after multiple TCP connection creations/closures to the
localhost.
  The bug was found using STAF RPC calls, but is easily reproducible with SSH.
  The bug doesn't appear on an identical virtual machine booting from the disk.
  The bug is not reproducible on a similarly-prepared Ubuntu 16.04 machine.
  The bug is reproducible using an older 4.13.0-16-generic kernel
  Reproducible on multiple hardware types.
  Unable to create a kernel memory dump due to makedumpfile errors.
  apport-bug save attached.

  NFSRoot boot options:
  vmlinuz initrd=initrd.img boot=nfs root=/dev/nfs
nfsroot=190.0.0.254:/diskless/host/u1616/Ubuntu/17.10 intel_iommu=on
net.ifnames=0 biosdevname=0 apparmor=0 ip=:eth0:dhcp
blacklist=i40e,ixgbe,fm10k crashkernel=384M-:768M rw

  Software:
  OS: Ubuntu 17.10
  Kernel: 4.13.0-17-generic x86_64

  Reproduction steps:
  1. Boot a system from a nfsroot
  2. Configure password-less localhost ssh access
  3. Run a loop: `while true; do ssh localhost 'uname -a'; done`
  4. Wait for system to crash

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1728244] Re: Touchpad stops working after reboot on Apollo Lake

Yes. "incomplete report" happens often, even when the touchpad is
working.

The message "dpkg-query: no packages found matching linux" is exactly what it
means, because there is no package called "linux". What did you do when you saw
this message?

Title:

  Thank you!!

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1728244] Re: Touchpad stops working after reboot on Apollo Lake

2017-12-01 Thread Brad
Those patches had errors when applying to that kernel version's sources.
This one from yesterday patched without errors:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1490349] Re: 15:10 and 16.04: bluetoothd "Failed to start discovery: org.bluez.Error.NotReady" after bluetoothd restarted

2017-12-01 Thread JeWu
Same issue here with Mint 18.2 Cinnamon and HID Logitech Mouse M535.
No matter which Kernel i used (from 4.8-x to 4.13.0-17) the same issue occured

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1653456] Re: ASUS G752VS: Touchpad and Fn keys not working (Ubuntu 16.04.1/16.10/17.04)

2017-12-01 Thread aljosa
24.11.2017
Dear Asus Customer Service,
attached please find the screenshot of today's situation at the ASUS Republic
of Gamers Official Forum: one after another, there are 3 different topics
regarding Asus G752VS - ELAN touchpad problems.

Now there are even more people who reported that the unofficial ELAN touchpad
patch I've mentioned last time fixes the ELAN touchpad problem for Linux too:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1653456/comments/144
https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?93405-G-752-VS-Touchpad-Gesture-Fix

For your info, there's another reportedly successful unofficial ELAN touchpad
fix, but I don't know if it makes the ELAN touchpad work under Linux too:

Dear Asus Valued Customer,
Regarding the below described case, we thank you for the information attached
and we kindly inform you we have forwarded your message to the responsible
department of our HQ.

  Hello, after experimenting few days ago with Ubuntu 16.04.1, 16.10 and
  17.04, among other problems I found that touchpad and Fn keys (all
  except volume control) doesn't work on my brand new ASUS G752VS.

  It is very hard even to try Ubuntu 16.10 and 17.04 because of the
  missing mouse pointer. This problem must be related to a video driver
  because if after installing one is capable to install Nvidia drivers -
  problem is solved. This problem doesn't exist both while trying and
  installing Ubuntu 16.04.1!

  I'm currently on Windows 10, and this bug report is made from Ubuntu
  16.04.1 LiveCD.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1694485] Comment bridged from LTC Bugzilla

2017-12-01 Thread bugproxy
--- Comment From sudeeshj...@in.ibm.com 2017-12-01 04:00 EDT---
Tried testing  given kernel
(linux-image-4.10.0-26-generic_4.10.0-26.30~lp1694485_ppc64el.deb).
Unfortunately still I'm hitting the issue mentioned in #12(BZ156746 and
BZ154870) . That fix has gone into 4.10-30 kernel. It would require a new
kernel rebuilt with both the fixes to validate this issue.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1734147] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - many LENOVO laptops models

2017-12-01 Thread tobia antoniolli
** Description changed:

  Hi all,

  Basically on Lenovo Y50-70 after installing Ubuntu 17.10, many users
  reported a corrupted BIOS.

  It's not possible to save new settings in BIOS anymore and after
  rebooting, the system starts with the old settings.

  Moreover (and most important) USB booting is not possible anymore since
  USB is not recognized. It's very serious, since our machines do not have
  a CDROM.

  Lenovo forums at the moment are full of topics regading this issue.

- For example:
