Title:
  r8169 ethernet card don't work after returning from suspension

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in linux source package in Bionic:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  ===SRU Justification===
  [Impact]
  Ethernet r8169 stops working after system resumed from suspend.

  [Test]
  User confirmed these patches fix the issue. r8169 continues to work
  after resume from suspend.

  [Regression Potential]
  Medium. The fix is limited to one device, all patches are in mainline.
  The WOL default change might cause regression for users that depend on
  BIOS settings. We can advice them to use userspace tool (systemd,
  ethtool, etc.) instead.

  ===Original Bug Report===
  I have noticed that the network stopped working on my desktop after I've
suspended the system and woke it up. On dmesg there are messages like:

  [  150.877998] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): enp1s0: link is not ready
  [  150.944101] do_IRQ: 3.37 No irq handler for vector
  [  150.944105] r8169 :01:00.0 enp1s0: link down
  [  150.944180] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): enp1s0: link is not ready

  When using Xenial (from a different install), this problem is not
  happening. This is happening on Bionic.

  There are only two ways to restore connectivity:
  1) Reboot the system;
  2) Remove the r8169 module and reinsert it with modprobe.

  The motherboard is a AsRock H55M-LE and the Ethernet controller is:

  01:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.
  RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 03)

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1589418] Re: udisksd high CPU usage

2018-10-06 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Medium => Low

--
You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel
Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu.

Title:
  udisksd high CPU usage

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  Using:  libudisks2-0:amd64 2.1.6-2ubuntu1

  Ubuntu 4.2.0-36.42-generic 4.2.8-ckt8
  Description:  Ubuntu 15.10
  Release:  15.10

  When I add USB drives to my system I end-up with udisksd using 100% of
  a core shortly after. After some time this goes up to 200% (in one
  step), so using 2 cores. Thread view shows CPU time of CMD 'pool':

  # ps -T -p
PID  SPID TTY  TIME CMD
  26229 26229 ?00:00:00 udisksd
  26229 26230 ?00:00:00 gmain
  26229 26232 ?00:00:00 gdbus
  26229 26233 ?00:00:00 probing-thread
  26229 26234 ?00:00:00 cleanup
  26229  3325 ?00:33:16 pool
  26229  5027 ?00:03:00 pool

  My solution is to kill it and let it restart.

  Strace needs to follow threads to show activity, it's then flooding
  with:

  # strace -p  -f
  [pid  3325] poll([{fd=12, events=POLLIN}, {fd=17, events=POLLOUT}, {fd=18,

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in linux source package in Artful:

Bug description:
  === SRU Justification ===
  [Impact]
  Bluetooth (Atheros) won't connect after resume.

  [Test Case]
  Suspend/resume XPS 9360. BT controller is not functional now.
  With the fix, user confirms the issue is fixed.

  [Regression Potential]
  Low. Limited to Atheros BT. No regression report so far since Hans'
  patch got merged upstream.

  === Original Bug Report ===

  Sometimes after sleep/resume bluetooth won't reconnect to any device.

  I can see this in dmesg:
  [13129.890580] Bluetooth: hci0 command 0x0c1a tx timeout

  I tried:
  1. sudo hciconfig hci0 reset
  Can't init device hci0: Connection timed out (110)

  2. tried reloading modules:
  sudo rmmod btusb
  sudo rmmod btrtl
  sudo rmmod hci_uart
  sudo rmmod btintel
  sudo rmmod btbcm btqca
  sudo rmmod rfcomm

  sleep 1

  sudo modprobe btusb btrtl hci_uart btintel btbcm btqca rfcomm

  no luck.

  3. restart bluetoothd - no luck

  Only reboot helps.

  Laptop is: Dell XPS 13 9360.

  The circumstances of this bug is well described on this webpage:

  https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=234122

  Furthermore a patch has been provided upstream:
  [UPDATE]: This patch is already part of the used kernel version.
Hence this bug is not related to this patch.

  https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/10185397/

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/kvalo/wireless-drivers.git/commit/?id=a9e6d44ddeccd3522670e641f1ed9b068e746ff7

  But is still not implemented in any Ubuntu release.

  If this is not corrected on time, then the new Bionic 18.04 will fail to
connect to Internet and the local network

Hi,

The i915 driver is crashing very often, for instance typynig 'xrandr -q'
produces a crash, and at startup lightdm also seem to crash because of
that.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1739107] Re: linux-cloud-tools-common: Ensure hv-kvp-daemon.service starts before walinuxagent.service

2018-10-06 Thread Guillaume Penin
Hi all,

I suspect that this fix is now preventing unattended-upgrades (in
shutdown down) to upgrade the package linux-cloud-tools-common.

The update process hangs during "Preparing to unpack". The server
restarts after the unattended-upgrades service timeout expires.

Package state after reboot :

iFR linux-cloud-tools-common 4.15.0-34.37 all Linux kernel version
specific cloud tools for version 4.15.0

The current impact is very important as all security updates are blocked
until you manually fix each server with :

dpkg --configure -a
apt install --only-upgrade linux-cloud-tools-common

As a simple straightforward fix, replacing :

Before=shutdown.target cloud-init-local.service walinuxagent.service

with :

Before=shutdown.target walinuxagent.service

makes the package upgradable during shutdown.

I have reported this bug in another bug report :
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1796376

Thanks for your help.

Bug description:
  This is a request to make a change in the hv-kvp-daemon systemd
  service which is part of the linux-cloud-tools-common package to
  ensure the hv-kvp-daemon service starts before the walinuxagent
  service. The default dependencies make hv-kvp-daemon wait until the
  whole system is up before it can start.

  Currently the /lib/systemd/system/hv-kvp-daemon.service file looks
  like this:

  # On Azure/Hyper-V systems start the hv_kvp_daemon
  #
  # author "Andy Whitcroft "
  [Unit]
  Description=Hyper-V KVP Protocol Daemon
  ConditionVirtualization=microsoft

  [Service]
  ExecStart=/usr/sbin/hv_kvp_daemon -n

  [Install]
  WantedBy=multi-user.target

  The suggested modification is to make the [Unit] section look like
  this:

  [Unit]
  Description=Hyper-V KVP Protocol Daemon
  ConditionVirtualization=microsoft
  DefaultDependencies=no
  After=systemd-remount-fs.service
  Before=shutdown.target cloud-init-local.service walinuxagent.service
  Conflicts=shutdown.target
  RequiresMountsFor=/var/lib/hyperv

  The hv-kvp-daemon service is not currently part of the critical-chain:

  $ systemd-analyze critical-chain
  The time after the unit is active or started is printed after the "@"
character.
  The time the unit takes to start is printed after the "+" character.

  In an Azure VM, the current startup time of my test is:
  $ systemd-analyze
  Startup finished in 10.375s (kernel) + 12.352s (userspace) = 22.728s

  After making the suggested change, the startup time is similar:

  $ systemd-analyze
  Startup finished in 9.759s (kernel) + 11.867s (userspace) = 21.627s

  And the service is now in the critical-chain:

  $ systemd-analyze critical-chain

character.
  The time the unit takes to start is printed after the "+" character.

  The ConditionVirtualization=microsoft line makes it so that this
  doesn't affect non microsoft virtualization environments (ie. qemu,
  kvm, vmware, xen, etc.) by checking whether the system is executed in
  a virtualized environment and optionally test whether it is a specific
  implementation, in this case "microsoft" for Hyper-V.

  https://www.freedesktop.org/software/systemd/man/systemd-detect-virt.html#
  microsoft = Hyper-V, also known as Viridian or Windows Server Virtualization

Bug description:
  SRU Request:

  [Impact]
  Relying on the nouveau driver and on the vga switcheroo (to get around a
change in systemd LP: #1777099) caused increased power consumption, and slowed
down the switching process.

  Furthermore, if the main X/Xwayland session was started by Gdm when
  the nvidia driver was loaded, the session will keep the nvidia module
  loaded, and prevent the system from switching off the dGPU. Also, the
  nouveau driver will be loaded, if nvidia is not, and this can cause
  problems to unsupported NVIDIA GPUs.

  The solution involves the following changes:

  1) Solving the problem in systemd (LP: #1777099)

  2) Adding code in gpu-manager and in nvidia-prime to unload the nvidia
  modules, and to allow the PCI device to sleep.

  3) Making a slight change to the current patch in Gdm, used to call
  the PRIME scripts before and after a Gdm session (so that gpu-manager
  gets actually called on log out)

  4) Adding code in gpu-manager to kill the main X/Xwayland session on
  log out, if the session is preventing us from unloading the nvidia
  driver. A new X/Xwayland session will be created after unload the
  module.

  5) Removing the systemd service that loads nouveau from the nvidia
  packages.

  [Test Case]
  1) Enable the -proposed repository, and install the new
"ubuntu-drivers-common", nvidia drivers, nvidia-prime, and gdm3 *

  2) Make sure the nvidia packages are installed, and enable performance mode
(if it is already enabled, call "sudo prime-select intel" first):
  sudo prime-select nvidia

  3) Restart your computer and attach your /var/log/gpu-manager.log. see
  if the system boots correctly. If unsure, please attach your /var/log
  /gpu-manager.log and /var/log/Xorg.0.log

  4) Select power saving mode:
  sudo prime-select intel

  5) Log out and log back in

  6) Check if the nvidia driver is still loaded:
  lsmod | grep nvidia

  [Regression Potential]
  Low, as hybrid graphics support does not work correctly, and the changes only
affect this use case.

  _
  * Steps to test the updates:

  1) Enable the bionic-proposed repositories

  2) Create /etc/apt/preferences.d/proposed-updates with the following
  content:

  Package: *
  Pin: release a=bionic-proposed
  Pin-Priority: 400

  3) Update the list of packages:

  sudo apt-get update

  4) Install the packages from -proposed using the following command:

  sudo apt install nvidia-driver-390/bionic-proposed gdm3/bionic-
  proposed ubuntu-drivers-common/bionic-proposed nvidia-prime/bionic-
  proposed nvidia-settings/bionic-proposed libnvidia-gl-390/bionic-
  proposed libnvidia-compute-390/bionic-proposed libnvidia-decode-390
  /bionic-proposed libnvidia-encode-390/bionic-proposed libnvidia-
  ifr1-390/bionic-proposed libnvidia-fbc1-390/bionic-proposed

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * Cannot hibernate & resume from a swapfile

  [Test Case]

   * Create or enlarge swapfile to be big enough for hibernation
   * Attempt to hibernate and resume

  [Regression Potential]

   * Hibernation is not reliable technology in itself, and multiple
  things may cause failure to resume. Thus it is sufficient to validate
  this bug after swapfile is attempted for hibernation and the disk
  offset kernel parameter is modified. Irrespective if actual suspending
  or resume were successful or not.

  [Other Info]

   * Original bug report

  In 4.17 a new attribute is introduced to configure the hibernation
  resume offset. Since Ubuntu enables a swapfile by default this
  attribute is important to be able to make hibernation work "out of the
  box".

  The patch in the kernel is here:

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rafael/linux-pm.git/commit/?h=linux-next=355064675f1c997cea017ea64c8f2c216e5425d9

  Systemd support for adopting this change is available here:
  https://github.com/systemd/systemd/pull/8406
  As of 3/30/18 it's not yet been merged however.

  Klibc support for adopting this change is available here:

Title:
  Ubuntu 18.04 is overheating after upgrade from 16.04

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in xserver-xorg-video-nouveau package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Ubuntu is overheating at my laptop. Opening youtube on firefox is
  enough for critical temperature shutdown.

  Using lm-sensors for monitoring on 18.04 the temp varies between 70 and 85°C
with only firefox or chrome open and doing nothing.
  On my old 16.04 with same using, the temp varies between 55 and 70°C.

  First thought was the driver nouveau is the problem, and finally I was
  able to install by add "nouveau.modeset=0" at livecd boot options,
  without temp shutdown.

  After install I disable the nouveau at modprobe blacklist, but the
  system continues overheating and shutdown with basic usage.

  I have no idea what's happening with the bionic at my laptop.

  My laptop is a Samsung RF411 i5 2nd Generation and Geforce 540M.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1793934] Re: Black Screen After A Few Minutes

2018-10-06 Thread jonas
I found this ArchWiki page which has a section about my GPU:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AMDGPU#R9_390_series_Poor_Performance_and.2For_Instability
After setting "radeon.cik_support=0 amdgpu.cik_support=1 amdgpu.dpm=1
amdgpu.dc=1" as kernel parameters, I did not get a black screen (yet).
So it seems, I am having the same issue as in this bug report:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=91880

Title:
  Black Screen After A Few Minutes

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Edit 1:
  - added "installing mainline linux kernel v4.3.6-wily/" to things I tried

  I first encountered the issue on Kubuntu 18.04 when I removed my 2nd monitor,
the screen went black after 5-30 seconds, forcing me to shutdown the PC by
pressing the power button. I tried the following to resolve the black screen
issue:
  - disconnecting the 1st instead of the 2nd monitor
  - using Ubuntu 18.04 (not Kubuntu)
  - using Wayland
  - installing the latest mainline linux kernel 4.19rc4
  - installing mainline linux kernel v4.3.6-wily/

  The only things that worked so far are:
  - Having both Monitors connected
  - nomodeset or recovery mode
  - using Ubuntu Gnome 16.04
  - login via tty/terminal

  When the PC was turned off for a while, I have to wait for a few minutes or
start lots of applications for the black screen to occur. If the PC was
restarted several times due to this bug, a blank screen may occur as soon as I
see the login screen.
  The issue also occurs during installation when autodetecting the keyboard
type or after selecting the installation type (Minimal Installation or Normal
Installation etc.)

  My Hardware:
  - ASRock H87 Pro4
  - Intel i5-4570
  - AMD Radeon R9 390
  - 1st Monitor connected via DisplayPort to HDMI adapter cable (or DVI-D)
  - 2nd Monitor connected via DVI-D cable
  - Windows 10 is installed on a separate SSD and is working just fine
(Although Windows 10 is doing some kind of boot repair when switching from
Ubuntu to Windows)

Bug description:
  CPU: Ryzen 5 2500U
  VGA: Radeon 535
  Notebook: Acer Aspire A315

  This is a brand new notebook on the market with Ryzen 5/Radeon.
  The default kernel of Ubuntu(18.04) hangs at loading with message:

  tsc: Refined TSC clocksource calibration: 1996.250 MHz
  clocksource: tsc: mask: 0x max_cycles: (...), max_idle_ns:
(...)
  Soft lockup

  Using pci=noacpi kernel parameter kernel loads without any problem but
  my notebook produces more heat than on Win10. If I know right Acer
  notebooks need ACPI to the correct power management.

  The same thing happens on mainline 4.17,4.18rc1-2.
  BIOS upgrade to the latest version: 1.08 hasn't helped

  This problem has been reported upstream:
  https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=200087

  The latest correctly working kernel was 4.13.* but the heat problem
  was present with this too.

2018-10-06 Thread Aravind R
Last 2 hrs played 5 uhd videos with flash game. No crash yet.

What is the fix? Is it Virtual Box problem?Will I receive same patch on
Kernel 4.15 stable version?

Please give me 8 more hrs. If no crash then it is 'kernel-fixed-
upstream'.
