[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1788387] Re: After upgrading from 4.4.0 to 4.15.0 system doesn't boot - ACPI issue

2018-10-13 Thread zunda
I have seemingly similar problem on Intel NUC DE3815TYKHE (ntel Atom CPU
E3815). On 4.15.*, it takes more than 5 minutes to unpack the initramfs
(below is an example on 4.15.0-36). With the acpi=noirq, the kernel
boots as usual.

$ dmesg | head -2; dmesg | grep -A1 initramfs

Title:
After upgrading from 4.4.0 to 4.15.0 system doesn't boot - ACPI issue

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I'm using Xubuntu in an old system, I'm concerned because other users
looking for a light OS for their old PC wouldn't be able to install or
boot the 18.04 version and above.

With kernel 4.4.0 the system boots without problem (xubuntu 16.04),
after upgrading to kernel 4.15 the system doesn't boot anymore
(18.04). This issue was present when testing kernel 4.13 too.

The install crashes with an error: BIOS bug:8254 timer not connected
  to io-apic error on.

Adding any of these commands to the boot allows the system to load
  properly:

  -acpi=off
  -pci=noacpi
  -acpi=noirq

  I attach the info related.

Title:
No LiveDVD start of 18.04 on MSI AM4 with Ryzen 7 with Nvidia graphics

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  Hi,
I tried to install Ubuntu 18.04 on a system with MSI X370 SLI PLUS
motherboard (Bios Version 7A33v3C of 2018-05-04), Ryzen 7 1700 and Nvidia GT
1030 graphics card.

The 18.04 LiveDVDs do not work at all. There is no display output.

On BIOS version 7A33v39 of 2018-01-29 MSI put the note:
It must install nvidia graphic driver ver 391.01 or latest version when using
AMD Raven Ridge CPU and nVidia graphic card.

It looks like that the current nouveau driver, used by 18.04 LiveDVDs,
  blocks the display output.

But, an old LiveDVD of Kubuntu 17.04 starts and Kubuntu seems to be working.
I have recorded the attached lshw data with that disk.
  Thanks,

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1788997] Re: rtl8723be wifi does not work under linux-modules-extra-4.15.0-33-generic

2018-10-13 Thread Heribert Heckhoff
Kernel as of comment #50
(4.17.0-041700rc2-generic_4.17.0-041700rc2.201810121135) doesn't work.
Very weak signal for both ant_sel=1 or ant_sel2.

Bug description:
When starting Xubuntu 18.04.1 LTS on a laptop HP 1S-af023ng with

  Using actual 4.15.0-33.36 amd64 instead, rtl8723be doesn't find any
wifi networks and thus there is no connection. Changing the antenna
  setup in /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723be_options.conf doesn't help either;
as a workaround an external wifi device (Gigaset USB Adapter 108)
  works.

The expectation is that wifi through rtl8723be will still work under
4.15.0-33.36 as it did previously.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1734147] Re: corrupted BIOS due to Intel SPI bug in kernel

2018-10-13 Thread Joannes Wyckmans
Hi, I have a PEAQ PNB S1015 i2N3, and I have issues starting since my initial
16.04 ubuntu installation.
I have completely deleted ubuntu, deleted the efi partition of ubuntu,
reinstalled windows from disk.

But,

I cannot boot from usb anymore.
Every start my computer blinks a warning message with "ubuntu boot failed".
And my bios still thinks ubuntu efi files are present.
I cannot change certain settings in windows, and cannot use restore windows.

Title:
corrupted BIOS due to Intel SPI bug in kernel

Status in Linux:

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in linux-hwe-edge source package in Xenial:
  Fix Released
Status in linux-oem source package in Xenial:
  Fix Released
Status in linux source package in Artful:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
An update to linux kernel on Ubuntu 17.10 that enabled the Intel SPI
drivers results in a serial flash that is read only in Intel Broadwell
and Haswell machines with serial flashes with SPI_NOR_HAS_LOCK set.

  Symptoms:
   * BIOS settings cannot be saved
   * USB Boot impossible
   * EFI entries read-only.

  ---

Fix: The issue was fixed in kernel version 4.13.0-21 by configuring
the kernel so it is not compiled with Intel SPI support. But previous
affected machines still suffered from a broken BIOS.

Repair: If you still can boot into Ubuntu, you can recover your BIOS
  with the following steps:

  1. Boot into Ubuntu
  2. Download
http://people.canonical.com/~ypwong/lp1734147/linux-image-4.15.0-041500rc6-generic_4.15.0-041500rc6.201712312330+20170103+1_amd64.deb
  3. Install the downloaded package:
    $ sudo dpkg -i
linux-image-4.15.0-041500rc6-generic_4.15.0-041500rc6.201712312330+20170103+1_amd64.deb
  4. Make sure the kernel is installed without any error. Once installed,
reboot.
  5. At grub, choose the newly installed kernel. You can choose the "recovery"
mode.
  6. Reboot and go to BIOS settings to confirm your BIOS has been recovered.
  7. In case your BIOS is not recovered, reboot to the new kernel, then reboot
*once again* to the new kernel, do not enter BIOS settings before the reboot.
After the second reboot, check BIOS.
  8. If your BIOS issue remains, download another kernel from
http://people.canonical.com/~ypwong/lp1734147/linux-image-4.15.0-041500rc6-generic_4.15.0-041500rc6.201712312330+clear+debug_amd64.deb,
and use dpkg to install it, then repeat steps 4 to 6.

After your BIOS is fixed, the kernel packages you just installed are
no longer needed, you can remove it by running 'sudo dpkg -r linux-
  image-4.15.0-041500rc6-generic'.

The patch used to build the linux v4.15 kernel in step 8 can be found
  at https://goo.gl/xUKJFR.

  ---

Test Case: Fix has been verified by our HWE team on affected hardware.

Regression Potential: Minimal, it's unlikely anyone is actually doing
  anything which requires this driver.

  Original Description:

Basically on Lenovo Y50-70 after installing Ubuntu 17.10, many users
  reported a corrupted BIOS.

It's not possible to save new settings in BIOS anymore and after
rebooting, the system starts with the old settings.

Moreover (and most important) USB booting is not possible anymore
since USB is not recognized. It's very serious, since our machines do
  not have a CDROM.

Lenovo forums at the moment are full of topics regading this issue.

  Thank you!!

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1722478] Re: Two-finger scrolling no longer works after resuming from suspend

2018-10-13 Thread Mark Fickett
I have a Thinkpad X1 Carbon 5th gen, and am also affected. Modprobing
psmouse also temporarily fixes for me (but if comes back if I close the
lid of my laptop and wake it up again), and adding the
synaptics_intertouch option in grub also seems to prevent it from coming
back.

It only started happening in the last few days, and I generally install
updates whenever they are available, though I haven't been using my
laptop every day (so it may have started happening in the last week or
two at most). I'm surprised it did only start recently, given this bug
was filed a while back.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1797713] [NEW] 18.10 update: keyboard backlight stopped working

2018-10-13 Thread Michael Weimann
Public bug reported:

I've updated to the Ubuntu 18.10 beta release. Since then my keyboard
backlight stopped working. The function keys still display the keyboard
backlight brightness control icon on screen, but it doesn't change.

I'm using kernel 4.18.0-10-generic.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1796228] Re: BUG: scheduling while atomic: irq/51-iwlwifi/408/0x7ffffc00

2018-10-13 Thread Cristian Aravena Romero
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=200991#c7

"Thanks, Johannes! I'll pull your fix into our core release soon, during
my next round of merging back from upstream.

The patch that fixes this "scheduling while atomic" issue is already in
net-next.git[1] and should go to 4.20. When it reaches 4.20 it will be
automatically backported to the relevant stable kernels. I could have
sent it to the 4.19-rc series, but since it's not a regression in 4.19,
I preferred to send it to -next instead.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1788583] Re: Cannot resume HP ProBook 470 G4 after suspending or hibernating

2018-10-13 Thread Beowulf
Eventually I installed two upstream kernels with ukuu utility.
Kernel 4.16.18 still has the bug
Kernel 4.17.19 is clean, no bug.

So please upgrade Ubuntu 18.04 LTS with kernel 4.17

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1788308] Re: [Regression] Colour banding appears on Lenovo B50-80 integrated display

** Tags added: verification-done-cosmic

--

Title:
[Regression] Colour banding appears on Lenovo B50-80 integrated
  display

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
The problem affects the integrated display on a Lenovo B50-80
  notebook.

Colour banding is visible everywhere on the system, as dithering seems
not to be enabled on this 6bpp display. This issue was not present on
non-HWE Ubuntu 16.04, and it showed up after I upgraded to Ubuntu
18.04. There was already a very similar bug #1749420 that had a fix
released, however, because the make and model of an LCD screen in that
case was different, the quirk added to the kernel did not address the
problem that affects my machine. The cause of this issue is probably
the same, since I have checked that pre-4.8.0-rc2 kernels handled
dithering correctly, and 4.8.0-rc2 and later kernels already had the
bug described. I believe that adding quirk for an another type of
  display may fix the problem.

I attached the results of running
  sudo get-edid | parse-edid in a file named edid.txt
  and
  sudo get-edid | edid-decode in a file named edid-decoded.txt.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
On the machine of Lenovo M715, there is an AMD GPU (1022:15dd rev ca), when it
switchs to amdgpufb, the system will hang randomlly, sometimes it hangs during
boot, reboot or poweroff, sometimes it hangs with longtime standby.

  [Fix]
Through bisecting, I found this patch can fix the problem, looks like without
this patch the ATOM BIOS can't be parsed correctlly.

  [Test Case]
Did the test of "boot, reboot and poweroff" 5 times, worked very well.
Let the system standby over one night, worked very well.

  [Regression Potential]
Very low, I tested this patch on at least 6 differnt lenovo machines
and those machines have different AMD GPUs on them, all of them worked
  as well as before.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1791193] Re: errores dmesg

2018-10-13 Thread latimerio
it may not be a bug but a flaw in logwatch as the message just says that an
error collector has been initialized so it is more likely an info.
Alas logwatch gets triggered by the word "Errors" and whows this in its report.
So this may be the real issue.

Bug description:
  CPU: Ryzen 5 2500U
  VGA: Radeon 535
  Notebook: Acer Aspire A315

This is a brand new notebook on the market with Ryzen 5/Radeon.
The default kernel of Ubuntu(18.04) hangs at loading with message:

tsc: Refined TSC clocksource calibration: 1996.250 MHz
  clocksource: tsc: mask: 0x max_cycles: (...), max_idle_ns:
(...)
  Soft lockup

Using pci=noacpi kernel parameter kernel loads without any problem but
my notebook produces more heat than on Win10. If I know right Acer
notebooks need ACPI to the correct power management.

The same thing happens on mainline 4.17,4.18rc1-2.
BIOS upgrade to the latest version: 1.08 hasn't helped

This problem has been reported upstream:
  https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=200087

The latest correctly working kernel was 4.13.* but the heat problem
  was present with this too.

guys does sleep/resume works for you? for me sometimes it crashes with a
screen freeze. i trimany boot parameters fixed my tables, also used
Richard's tables but it still freezes sometimes, should I open a separate
bug report? my laptop is of the dual gpu variety. it's the only thing
that bothers me with this laptop.
