Title:
click/pop noise in the headphone on several lenovo laptops

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  [Impact]
Lenovo told us that some linux uers reported headphone noise on Lenovo's
website. After investigating, we found those Lenovo laptop mdoels all
have the codec of alc285, and we can reproduce the noise problem too.

  [Fix]
Don't use the DAC of headphone, let headphone share the DAC with speaker,
  the noise disappears.

  [Test Case]
After applying this patch, we tested on Lenovo P52, P72, X1 carbon and X1
  Yoda2, no noise anymore

  [Regression Potential]
Low. This patch only apply to several lenovo machines, and after applying
this patch, both speaker and headphone still work very well.

commit 9c27369f4a1393452c17e8708c1b0beb8ac59501
Author: Mario Limonciello
Date: Tue Dec 11 08:16:14 2018 -0600

r8152: Add support for MAC address pass through on RTL8153-BND

All previous docks and dongles that have supported this feature use
the RTL8153-AD chip.

RTL8153-BND is a new chip that will be used in upcoming Dell type-C docks.
It should be added to the whitelist of devices to activate MAC address
pass through.

Per confirming with Realtek all devices containing RTL8153-BND should
activate MAC pass through and there won't use pass through bit on efuse
like in RTL8153-AD.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1805079] Re: click/pop noise in the headphone on several lenovo laptops

2018-12-25 Thread Hui Wang
For the quiet and non-quiet problem, since there is no difference between 1st
and 2nd alsa-info.txt, I really have no idea what is the root cause for this
problem. Probably, we can do another test:
don't plug the headphone in poweroff state,
poweron the machine, and let machine enter grub, then plug the headphone, after
that, let machine boot linux kernel..., let us see if the headphone is still
quiet or not, if not, it looks like bios do sth if plugging headphone in
poweroff state.

For the noise problem, since I did not hear the noise in my test two weeks ago,
and I don't have machine in my hand now, I need to wait for ending of holiday
(after new year holiday), then I will get the machines and redo the test.

thanks.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1809753] [NEW] HDMI screen no signal until ubuntu boots - No uefi, no grub

2018-12-25 Thread Anthony James Wallace
Public bug reported:

Purchased new computer. Installed old hard drive. Uefi and grub
working. Installed Ubuntu 18.04, as new install. After installing
software and updates I have not seen Uefi splash or grub since. If I
get into grub or UEFI I have no screen to work from as the HDMI shows
yellow on its status which means no connection. Possibly has DP instead
of HDMI as primary display but cannot test this until I get a suitable
cable DP to HDMI. It seems to me though that the firmware update has
messed this up.

Motherboard has American Megatrends UEFI, Processor is i7.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1687910] Re: [Lenovo W520] Linux Freezing Issue At Boot

Just ran into this issue on Ubuntu 18.10 on a Thinkpad T420. Adding

Title:
[Lenovo W520] Linux Freezing Issue At Boot

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:

    -> Intel(R) VT-d Feature [Enabled]

Copyright (c) 2015 FUJITSU LIMITED
  or later after:
[OK] Started Load/Save Screen Backlight Brightness of backlight:nv_backlight.

The error occurs randomly (about 50% of all boot tries).

The error has already been known for a long time (e.g.
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/776999) and has
never been fixed. It also occurs for older BIOS/UEFI versions and
Ubuntu versions (e.g. 14.04) than shown in the report. Other related
  reports can be found here:

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Linux-Discussion/64-bit-Linux-W520-amp-nVidia/td-p/577789/page/2

A workaround for this issue is to add kernel parameter "nox2apic" to
the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT line. Another possible workaround (at
least for the first hanging position is to use kernel parameters
  'acpi_osi=! acpi_osi="!Windows 2009"' instead.

After creating a bcache cache device with an 8k block size (see
#1662407), a kernel oops happens every time device is probed.

I'm not sure that there is any userspace bug present in #1662407 at
all - it may just be kernel. I've attached a dmesg there, but can't
actually get into the system at the moment to get apport-collect or
  other diagnostics.

Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Not sure if I'll report this upstream but there is definitely an issue
with microphone recording on my desktop, this is not happening on my
laptop which has a different codec.

Already tried all workarounds possible, no luck. Only with my desktop
with this particular motherboard. No issues in Windows, the sound
recorded in there is distorted and has some static and robotic tone on
  high-pitch.

Title:
click/pop noise in the headphone on several lenovo laptops

Thanks for the link but I am afraid this is not same problem.
My model has an intel CPU. I don't get the kernel panic message, nor the "IRQ
nobody cared" message.
New lines stop appearing after `intel-lpss - enabling device ( -> 0002)`
(when IRQ is not disabled), maybe thats device is guilty.

acpi=noirq disables any hardware that makes use of irqs like the touchscreen.
If you have a dual boot you could be affected by this
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=201817 which triggers a kernel
panic when you reboot from windows(without a complete poweroff in between).

Title:
efivarfs test in ubuntu_kernel_selftest failed on the second run with
  Xenial AMD64

Status in ubuntu-kernel-tests:
  In Progress
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
This seems to be an issue to the test case, if you run the test suite
twice, it will fail on the second run.

The first run will create the test file:
  $ ll
/sys/firmware/efi/efivars/test_create_read-210be57c-9849-4fc7-a635-e6382d1aec27
  -rw--- 1 root root 0 Dec 24 07:16
/sys/firmware/efi/efivars/test_create_read-210be57c-9849-4fc7-a635-e6382d1aec27

This is cause the open(O_WRONLY) test in test_create_read failed with
premission denied on the second run.
This issue can be reproduced with upstream kernel tree on Xenial as well.
