[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1794995] Re: 18.04 can't adjust brightness on ASUS T300F. Worked fine on 16.04.

2019-01-13 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
If the system is upgraded from 16.04, there should be some older kernels
still in your system. See if those kernels still work.

Title:
18.04 can't adjust brightness on ASUS T300F. Worked fine on 16.04.

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
Title of my display under Settings is "Unknown Display".

I think there's no proper display driver for my laptop in this new
distribution, "18.04", because the setting for my display works fine
  before I upgrade from 16.04.

While I said "works fine", I meant, I could use the "fn" button plus
with the brightness adjusting button, which is "f5" and "f6" on my
  laptop, to adjust the brightness.

Other than the "fn" combination button not working, I can't even
adjust the brightness in the setting and inside the main menu bar,
which I think there might have since a control center is one of the
  features of this version upgrade.

So, thanks for reading my problem, and please help, otherwise, it's so
unhealthy for my eyes for looking at a screen with too bright for so
long and I have to look at the screen for so long.

  Thanks in advance.

Ps, in case it's needed, the model of my laptop is, ASUS T300F. A
transform 2-in-one laptop. The fact that my laptop can "transform"
might be the reason why I got this issue, the drive that serves all
just fail to meet its needs. I'm sorry.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1806472] Re: RTL8822BE WiFi Disabled in Kernel 4.18.0-12

2019-01-13 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
The drivers in staging won't get loaded when lockdown is enabled to
provide safety. There's a list to override behavior though.

The r8822be in its current form defaults to enable debugfs, which can be less
secure as it exposes and extra interface to userspace. But we are not sure if
the driver still works once the debugfs gets disabled, so please test this
kernel:
https://people.canonical.com/~khfeng/lp1806472/

Once we are sure r8822be still works when debugfs is disabled, we can
include this fix to Cosmic.

Title:
RTL8822BE WiFi Disabled in Kernel 4.18.0-12

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  ===SRU Justification===
  [Impact]
Realtek 8822be doesn't work under kernel lockdown.

  [Fix]
Add r8822be.ko to signature-inclusion, so it can be signed and be loaded
  when lockdown is enabled.

  [Test]
Since I can't signed the kernel so it's not tested.

  [Regression Potential]
Low. The driver is maintained by a Realtek guy, so bugs are actually
  getting fixed.

  ===Original Bug Report===
Received kernel patch 4.18.0-12 today on my machine. On reboot my WiFi
appears to be unavailable.
lspci still recognises the installed RTL8822BE card and a reboot back to the
previous kernel version (4.18.0-11) seems to resolve the problem.

We tried some debugging in the IRC channel and didn't get very far.
The r8822be module alias is intact, trying to modprobe it or insert
results in a "operation not permitted" error. Modprobing mac80211 and
cfg80211 which r8822be depends on did not seem to help.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1805631] Re: Freeze when usb-data-collision with usb-mouse

2019-01-13 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v5.20-rc2 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as
"Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Title:
  Freeze when usb-data-collision with usb-mouse

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
To my computer I have connected a USB-hub and to that I have attached
  a USB-mouse and a USB-to-Ehternet adapter. The computer sometimes
freezes completely and power button is the only escape. This happens
when I scroll the mouse, press a button or moves the mouse (any event
  from the mouse).

This can happen in any running program: Firefox, pdf-viewer,
  Libreoffice Writer...

Most often this comes with my usb-to-ethernet LEDs switch off (during
  blink), but not always.

Seems to be a collision event between my USB-mouse and USB-to-ethernet
adapter, i.e mutex. An other computer without the USB-to-ethernet
adapter never freezes. Configured in the same way.

(I used Ubuntu 14.04 for a long time and this freeze never happened.
In 18.04 this happens at least every two weeks. It is the same
  hardware.)

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1768976] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 is overheating after upgrade from 16.04

2019-01-13 Thread indigocat
Same problem here:

Lenovo ThinkPad T410s
Intel i5 (1st gen, 2.53Ghz)
NVidia NVS3100M graphics

Kernel 4.4 in 16.04 idles at 35°C - 37°C (fresh, high-quality thermal
paste applied a week ago).

Kernel 4.15 in 18.04 idles at 48°C - 52°C.

Only Dropbox and Megasync in the background; htop shows very low CPU use
from these 2 apps.

Overall system CPU usage (idle) doesn't go above 1.3% - 2% range.

Same workflow from 16.04 + kernel 4.4 runs 20°C hotter in 18.04 + kernel
4.15.

Regular operation with Chromium and Emacs drives temperature to 76°C -
80°C.

Critical temperature is 95°C before shutdown.

This is running really hot.

Title:
Ubuntu 18.04 is overheating after upgrade from 16.04

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in xserver-xorg-video-nouveau package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Ubuntu is overheating at my laptop. Opening youtube on firefox is
  enough for critical temperature shutdown.

Using lm-sensors for monitoring on 18.04 the temp varies between 70 and 85°C
with only firefox or chrome open and doing nothing.
On my old 16.04 with same using, the temp varies between 55 and 70°C.

First thought was the driver nouveau is the problem, and finally I was
able to install by add "nouveau.modeset=0" at livecd boot options,
  without temp shutdown.

After install I disable the nouveau at modprobe blacklist, but the
system continues overheating and shutdown with basic usage.

I have no idea what's happening with the bionic at my laptop.

  My laptop is a Samsung RF411 i5 2nd Generation and Geforce 540M.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1805079] Re: click/pop noise in the headphone on several lenovo laptops

2019-01-13 Thread Vadim Vygonets
Hui Wang,

BTW, in case the sound card distinguishes between headphone out and line
out modes, thus may be relevant: my headphones have impedance of 70Ω.

Title:
click/pop noise in the headphone on several lenovo laptops

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  [Impact]
Lenovo told us that some linux uers reported headphone noise on Lenovo's
website. After investigating, we found those Lenovo laptop mdoels all
have the codec of alc285, and we can reproduce the noise problem too.

  [Fix]
Don't use the DAC of headphone, let headphone share the DAC with speaker,
  the noise disappears.

  [Test Case]
After applying this patch, we tested on Lenovo P52, P72, X1 carbon and X1
  Yoda2, no noise anymore

  [Regression Potential]
Low. This patch only apply to several lenovo machines, and after applying
this patch, both speaker and headphone still work very well.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1811595] Re: 18.04 laggy login but works fine off of boot usb

2019-01-13 Thread Mat Nightingale
A workaround I found from here (https://askubuntu.com/questions/1070862
/ubuntu-server-18-04-graphics-in-console-is-extremely-slow)

sudo vim /etc/default/grub
uncomment GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480 and change to GRUB_GFXMODE=1027x768
then
sudo update-grub

Next disable ast driver
sudo vim /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
append line blacklist ast
then
sudo update-initramfs -u
reboot

virtio-vga,virgl=true fails to boot. Even setting to output boot
messages to a serial console no messages appear as if it never tried

What makes this strange is that the live media works correctly using
-device virtio-vga,virgl=true, but then, on reboot, the installed
  system fails to boot.

To make the guest work it's required to remove the option ,virgl=true

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1811595] [NEW] 18.04 laggy login but works fine off of boot usb

2019-01-13 Thread Mat Nightingale
Public bug reported:

Running 18.04 off a boot usb stick works flawlessly, however after a
clean install the login screen is very laggy and once I enter my
password the screen resolution is all messed up and unreadable.

If I reboot and hold down shift to get the Grub menu and choose Advanced
then recovery mode and then without altering anything I choose resume
from the recovery menu and the login screen works perfectly.

All system updates are done.

System Specs

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1803929] Re: Summary: Kernel bug (unhandled paging request) on "udisksctl power-off"

Title:
Summary: Kernel bug (unhandled paging request) on "udisksctl power-
  off"

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  lsb_release -rd
  Description: Ubuntu 16.04.5 LTS
  Release: 16.04

  uname -a
  Linux metabox 4.4.0-139-generic #165-Ubuntu SMP Wed Oct 24 10:58:50 UTC 2018
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

  Steps (1) to reproduce:
  1) Plug in a USB3 hard drive.
  2) Right click on launcher icon.
  3) Select "Safely Remove".

  After finding this: https://askubuntu.com/a/532691
...the following steps also reproduce the problem.

  Steps (2) to reproduce:
  1) Plugin in a USB3 hard drive.
  2) udisksctl unmount -b /dev/sdXY
  3) udisksctl power-off -b /dev/sdX

System completely locks and becomes unresponsive, such that even the Magic
SysRq key combination does nothing.
Most of the time the fans on my laptop go crazy (so the CPU must get stuck in
some loop), but once they did not and the system was just locked (without the
fans going nuts).

I can't get a textual copy of the kernel bug log (because I have to do a hard
reset to regain control of the system and the output doesn't get flushed to
disk), but I did manage to get a photo of some of it (please refer to
attachment).

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1803929] Re: Summary: Kernel bug (unhandled paging request) on "udisksctl power-off"

2019-01-13 Thread Andreas Bouché
I was also able to reproduce this in kernels 4.4.0-139, -140 and -141. Kernel
4.4.0-138 worked fine.
On kernel 4.4.0-140, the freeze didn't occur instantly but after about 20
seconds, so I was able to capture a stacktrace.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1768976] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 is overheating after upgrade from 16.04

2019-01-13 Thread RastaPopoulos
Same symptoms here and no nvidia GPU, only "simple" Intel.

Since this version, temp is very high. Between 70 and 80 by default, and
up to 90 and more with a youtube video and even more with a 3D game like
Minetest… and then it shutdowns (like max 5-10min on Minetest).

It was clearly not the case with previous versions. Last year I remember
watching hours of videos or playing hours of Tuxracer or Minetest with
my son, and no overheating nor shutdowns. Never.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 262408] Re: SysRq key equivalent needed

2019-01-13 Thread Jarno Suni
** Description changed:

MacBook keyboards and other Apple keyboards lack a SysRq key and
therefore lack important kernel functionality that is designed to save
catastrophic data loss if the computer freezes. An equivalent keystroke
should be assigned, for example Fn + Eject, to preserve the
functionality of the Magic SysRq key in linux on a Mactel. I believe
this is a bug and not a feature request because the current
implementation assumes that all keyboards have a SysRq key which is an
incorrect assumption and therefore a mistake, or bug.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1804841] Re: iwlwifi Microcode SW error detected. Restarting 0x2000000.

2019-01-13 Thread UrkoM
@sforshee: No, wifi had been stable on Bionic before that. Somehow it seems
quite stable again now. I got this laptop in September, so I installed Bionic
directly.
I have checked my syslog, and I don't see the microcode loading errors anymore.

  Wireless card: Intel Corporation Wireless 8265 / 8275 [8086:24fd] (rev 78)
  Firmware version: 34.0.1
  Description:Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS

Frequent errors as soon as I connect to wifi:
Microcode SW error detected. Restarting 0x200.

Expected to happen: Great and stable wifi like a couple of weeks ago
What happens: very slow, intermittent internet access, lots of ping loss

Found a suggestion of a workaround: adding these lines to
  /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf

  [device]
  wifi.scan-rand-mac-address=no

These lines were already there, not added by me.

I use a logitech z200 that works fine, i use it with a usb type c adapter
that came with my pixel 3, my speakers arent shown at all in the settings or
make sound, its not the usb c adapter because it works fine on my windows dual
boot and has worked at one point on ubuntu, regardless of the fact that ubuntu
has never recognized my thunderbolt port, i use ubuntu 18.10 by the way when i
use lsusb, one of the results is google inc., which is my headphone adapter, i
can tell because when i unplug it it goes away, even when i plug it into the
3.5 mm headphone jack it doesn't work, i don't know if im forgetting something
or not, this is the second time im typing this because i accidentally closed
the first tab of this, whats interesting, is now that i go to alsamixer, and
press f6 i see option 1.Headphone Adapter, i select it and set the volume all
the way up and go to something that makes audio and nothing happens, then i
unplug it and see if it disappears, surely enough it does
