[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1829620] Re: intel-microcode on ASUS makes kernel stuck during loading initramfs on bionic-updates, bionic-security

2019-07-13 Thread Marcus Aurelius
I'm affected by this too. I have a Dell Inspiron 5480 with an i7-8565U
CPU.

The problem happens after the first batch of updates on a fresh install
of Ubuntu Budgie 18.04.2 or Mint 19.1.

Thankfully, adding dis_ucode_ldr works, but finding this workaround on
the web was not easy!

  Description:

booting, after grub)
  - does not even show the enter cryptsetup passphrase
  - affected kernels:

5.0.0.15.71 amd64 [installed]

  - the setup is not new, has been working perfectly before (about 7
  days since my last restart?)

  System:
  - HW: ASUS Zenbook 14 UX433FN
  - Ubuntu 18.04, runing latest HWE, fully updated
  - grub(-pc), cryptsetup (crypttab entries for custom encrypted LUKS setup),

  Suspected/possible cause?:
  - recent intel-microcode package update
  - recent kernel package updates

  Steps taken:
  - tried to remove "splash quiet" from grub/kernel cmd line (also tried adding
nosplash, noplymouth)
  - completely removed nvidia drivers (apt purge *nvidia*)
  - completely purged and reinstalled grub (grup-pc)
  - completely purged and reinstalled all kernels (headers, modules, image, ..)
  - toggle BIOS "fastboot" (now using OFF)
  - toggle UEFI SecureBoot (now using ON)
  - remove plymouth (apt remove *plymouth* , but the workaround is working with
plymouth installed)

  Workaround:
  - so far, I'm only able to boot with non-Ubuntu kernel!
(linux-image-liquorix-amd64)
  - which needs "splash" option ON
  - reinstall cryptsetup & update-grub (as suggested in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1829620/comments/10 )

  I am not sure how to get you more debug info, as this setup has been
  working before, and it's a very eary boot-process bug, so I can't even
  access dmesg etc.

  EDIT:

  Hypothesis:
  Only affects ASUS with i7-8565U Whiskey Lake Intel CPU

  Upstream Bug Report:
  https://github.com/intel/Intel-Linux-Processor-Microcode-Data-Files/issues/1

  WORKAROUND 1: disable intel microcode updates during boot
  From this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/intel-microcode/+bug/1759920
  1/ add the boot parameter: dis_ucode_ldr to /etc/default/grub
  2/ update-grub

  WORKAROUND 2: downgrade (and hold) intel-microcode to older version from
bionic/main
  apt install --reinstall intel-microcode=3.20180312.0~ubuntu18.04.1

  WORKAROUND 3: upgrade BIOS
  Asus has released updated BIOSes, which probably include the newest
microcode. After upgrading workarounds 1,2 are not needed.
  Please NOTE, unlike workarounds 1,2, BIOS upgrade is permanent and cannot be
(easily) reverted.

  [Fix]
  Let HID core allow longer input report length.

  [Test]
  User confirmed the fix works.

  [Regression Potential]
  Low. Longer input report length is now considered valid, shorter input
  report length doesn't get touched.

  === Original Bug Report ===

  Dmesg is a constant barrage of the same error:
  ```
  [  406.165461] hid-sensor-hub 001F:8086:22D8.0002: hid_field_extract() called
with n (192) > 32! (kworker/5:1)
  This does not occur in 4.19 but does occur in all mainline 4.20
  releases including 4.20.13 (linux-image-unsigned-4.20.13-042013).
  Tested with both Ubuntu's included libinput 1.10 and an updated
  libinput 1.12.
  Hardware (from lspci) includes a synaptic touchpad. Having the xorg
  synaptic driver installed makes no difference.
  Problem: When rebooting the server, everything goes well (shutting
  down services, unmounting etc) until the last step where it reads
  "Starting Reboot". At this point the system is getting stuck and
  nothing else can can be done than holding the power button in for a
  long enough time to turn it off. At the same time as the system get
  stuck, a red error light is lightening up on the server. This light is
  green until it reaches this "Starting Reboot" stage. The same happens
  if the server is shutdown, with the difference that the last message
  is "Starting Power-Off" instead of "Starting Reboot".
  The server is installed with a new clean 18.04 installation. This
  server was rebooting/shutting down without a problem with all releases
  between 16.04 and 17.10.
  This problem is serious as it prevents remote reboot.
[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1836467] [NEW] Bluetooth fails with "Bluetooth: hci0: request failed to create LE connection: status 0x0c" message with Kernel 4.20 and up
2019-07-13 Thread Warren Baird
Public bug reported:
This is similar to https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1829737 - however the
issue was not fixed by linux-firmware 1.173.8 so I was advised to log a
new bug.
I have an ASUS ZenBook 14 - UX433FA - which based on this -
https://www.notebookcheck.net/ASUS-ZenBook-14-UX433FA-Core-i5-8265U-SSD-FHD-Laptop-Review.403541.0.html
 - I believe has an Intel 9560 chipset (I am not sure how to independently
verify this).
With kernels older than 4.20 I can successfully pair my bluetooth mouse
(Logitech MX Master) - but with newer kernels I get "Bluetooth: hci0: request
failed to create LE connection: status 0x0c" messages.
I'm running Linux Mint 19.1
I tried installing linux-firmware 1.173.8, and it didn't seem to help -
I also downloaded 1.173.9 proposed from here:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/bionic/amd64/linux-firmware/1.173.9 and
that also didn't seem to help.
Both after a cold reboot and a warm reboot I see
[ 14.724438] Bluetooth: hci0: Firmware revision 0.1 build 201 week 49 2017
in my dmesg output.
Bluetooth works just fine with earlier kernels (however other aspects of
the laptop like suspend don't work as well, which is why I'm trying the
newer kernel.
compatible with kernel version >= 4.19 and will cause failure to pair BT 4.0
devices.
  [Fix]
  29a536a02cad linux-firmware: Update firmware file for Intel Bluetooth 9560
  Above upstream change contains latest firmware file for Intel
  Bluetooth 9560 that fixes HID pairing in recent kernel versions.
  [Test Case]
  Copy ibt-17-16-1.sfi blob to /lib/firmware/intel and do a cold boot to reload
firmware. One should find following message in dmesg:
Bluetooth: hci0: Bootloader revision 0.1 build 42 week 52 2015
  This indicates firmware reload has been activated. For further warm
  boots, kernel would dump updated revision:
Bluetooth: hci0: Firmware revision 0.1 build 184 week 15 2019
  And perform BT 4.0 device pairing for functional tests.
  Tested blob against following kernel versions:
  * 5.0.0-1004-oem-osp1
  * 5.0.0-15-generic
  * 4.18.0-20-generic
  * 4.15.0-1038-oem
  * 4.15.0-50-generic
  [Regression Risk]
  Low. This affects only Intel JeffersonPeak Bluetooth chip series, namely
9461/9462/9560, which are the hardware variants to be fixed.
  ---
  For kernel version >= 4.19, it fails to pair with BT4.0 HID devices
  and leave error messages in syslog:
    Bluetooth: hci0: request failed to create LE connection: status 0x0c
  Which can be detailed by btmon:
    < HCI Command: LE Extended Create Connection (0x08|0x0043) plen 26 #800
  Verified this has been fixed at least in upstream linux-firmware
  commit 29a536a02cadb75b84c6c0b5d7af22d34d278563, firmware release
  version 21.10.0.6. With that firmware blob placed under
  /lib/firmware/intel and a cold boot, dmesg gives updated revision and
  device pairing works as expected:
[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1785964] Re: Unable to unlock the desktop session: systemd-logind: got pause for 13:69
2019-07-13 Thread spi
S2 instead of S3 didn't resolve the freezing too - took some time for
the freezing to occur again. I stumbled across autofs and quick tests
suggest with autofs turned off the freezing is gone.
Is anybody else who is facing the freezing using autofs (or systemd's
automount feature)?
  [ThinkPad S1 Yoga] Machine Immediately Wakes Up From Suspend
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Bug description:
  I am using Ubuntu 18.04.2 on a Lenovo ThinkPad S1 Yoga. Unfortunately
  when I suspend the machine to throw it into my bag, it immediately
  wakes up causing an issue where the machine will run hot in 85 - 90
  degree weather while I am in town.
  This is not a firmware issue as I have downgraded the BIOS and I have
  also observed how it worked fine under Arch Linux. I am not entirely
  sure which package is responsible to interact with acpi under
  Debian/Ubuntu
Title:
  [ThinkPad S1 Yoga] Machine Immediately Wakes Up From Suspend
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Bug description:
  I am using Ubuntu 18.04.2 on a Lenovo ThinkPad S1 Yoga. Unfortunately
  when I suspend the machine to throw it into my bag, it immediately
  wakes up causing an issue where the machine will run hot in 85 - 90
  degree weather while I am in town.
  This is not a firmware issue as I have downgraded the BIOS and I have
  also observed how it worked fine under Arch Linux. I am not entirely
  sure which package is responsible to interact with acpi under
  Debian/Ubuntu
  wakes up causing an issue where the machine will run hot in 85 - 90
  degree weather while I am in town.
  This is not a firmware issue as I have downgraded the BIOS and I have
  also observed how it worked fine under Arch Linux. I am not entirely
  sure which package is responsible to interact with acpi under
  Debian/Ubuntu
converter to connect an external monitor, it does not work with the thunderbolt
port, but display port is always working.
  I tried 4 different branding converters and get all the same result: DP port
works, Thunderbolt port does NOT.
  Detail syslog and dmesg can be found here
[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1830961] Re: Kernels & kernel drivers fail to build with gcc-9 [error: ‘-mindirect-branch’ and ‘-fcf-protection’ are not compatible]
2019-07-13 Thread jean-christophe manciot
I confirm that on Ubuntu Eoan with:
- linux kernel 5.2.0-8.9
- gcc-9 9.1.0-8ubuntu1
I am able to:
- build DPDK 19.05
- install xtables-addons-dkms.
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-430 package in Ubuntu:
Status in virtualbox package in Ubuntu:
Bug description:
  Compiling kernels & kernel modules fails due to these errors:
  ./include/linux/compiler.h:193:1: error: ‘-mindirect-branch’ and
  ‘-fcf-protection’ are not compatible
  (This happens with any kernel modules.)
  This appears to be due to the changes in 9.1.0-3ubuntu1 enabling -fcf-
  protection by default on 19.10's gcc-9.
  Switching to gcc-8 allows compilation to proceed.
  WORKAROUND:
  sudo ln -fs gcc-8 /usr/bin/gcc
Title:
  Unrecoverable freezing. 18.04 Ubuntu
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Bug description:
  Hello,
  I recently installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu on my system. It's dual
  boot, Ubuntu/Win10
  Every morning I wake up I have to restart my system as Ubuntu has
  completely frozen. Even when I hit Caps Lock/Num Lock the light
  doesn't change. I've given it 15-20 mins to see if there any response
  and it's completely unresponsive.
  I've turned off Automatic Suspend in the power settings as initially I
  thought it might be that but now I'm unsure and I could replicate the
  issue but it'd be in an inoperable state and I'd be unable to submit
  anything.
  Thank you for reading thus far and for your time, I hope we can
  resolve this for myself and others.
  I'm fairly new to Linux so bare with me, however I work in IT so I'm
  somewhat competent with computers and at following good instructions.
  4.18.0-25-generic
  Distributor ID:   Ubuntu
  Description:  Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS
  Release:  18.04
  Codename: bionic
  Thanks again for any support you can provide and for this wonderful
  doesn't change. I've given it 15-20 mins to see if there any response
  and it's completely unresponsive.
  I've turned off Automatic Suspend in the power settings as initially I
  thought it might be that but now I'm unsure and I could replicate the
  issue but it'd be in an inoperable state and I'd be unable to submit
  anything.
  Thank you for reading thus far and for your time, I hope we can
  resolve this for myself and others.
  I'm fairly new to Linux so bare with me, however I work in IT so I'm
  somewhat competent with computers and at following good instructions.
Title:
  Unrecoverable freezing. 18.04 Ubuntu
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Bug description:
  Hello,
  I recently installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu on my system. It's dual
  boot, Ubuntu/Win10
  Every morning I wake up I have to restart my system as Ubuntu has
  completely frozen. Even when I hit Caps Lock/Num Lock the light
  doesn't change. I've given it 15-20 mins to see if there any response
  and it's completely unresponsive.
  I've turned off Automatic Suspend in the power settings as initially I
  thought it might be that but now I'm unsure and I could replicate the
  issue but it'd be in an inoperable state and I'd be unable to submit
  anything.
  Thank you for reading thus far and for your time, I hope we can
  resolve this for myself and others.
  I'm fairly new to Linux so bare with me, however I work in IT so I'm
  somewhat competent with computers and at following good instructions.
  Distributor ID:   Ubuntu
  Description:  Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS
[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1830961] Re: Kernels & kernel drivers fail to build with gcc-9 [error: ‘-mindirect-branch’ and ‘-fcf-protection’ are not compatible]
2019-07-13 Thread Gianfranco Costamagna
This is fixed in the -proposed kernel, so I don't plan to hack
virtualbox sources to drop such flag.
  ./include/linux/compiler.h:193:1: error: ‘-mindirect-branch’ and
  ‘-fcf-protection’ are not compatible
  (This happens with any kernel modules.)
  This appears to be due to the changes in 9.1.0-3ubuntu1 enabling -fcf-
  protection by default on 19.10's gcc-9.
  Switching to gcc-8 allows compilation to proceed.
  WORKAROUND:
  sudo ln -fs gcc-8 /usr/bin/gcc
Status in HWE Next:
Status in linux-firmware package in Ubuntu:
Status in linux-firmware source package in Bionic:
Bug description:
  SRU Justification
  [Impact]
  The firmware blob for Intel Bluetooth 9560/9462 is versioned 20.30.0.1 is not
compatible with kernel version >= 4.19 and will cause failure to pair BT 4.0
devices.
  [Fix]
  29a536a02cad linux-firmware: Update firmware file for Intel Bluetooth 9560
  Above upstream change contains latest firmware file for Intel
  Bluetooth 9560 that fixes HID pairing in recent kernel versions.
  [Test Case]
  Copy ibt-17-16-1.sfi blob to /lib/firmware/intel and do a cold boot to reload
firmware. One should find following message in dmesg:
Bluetooth: hci0: Bootloader revision 0.1 build 42 week 52 2015
  This indicates firmware reload has been activated. For further warm
  boots, kernel would dump updated revision:
Bluetooth: hci0: Firmware revision 0.1 build 184 week 15 2019
  And perform BT 4.0 device pairing for functional tests.
  Tested blob against following kernel versions:
  * 5.0.0-1004-oem-osp1
  * 5.0.0-15-generic
  * 4.18.0-20-generic
  * 4.15.0-1038-oem
  * 4.15.0-50-generic
  [Regression Risk]
  Low. This affects only Intel JeffersonPeak Bluetooth chip series, namely
9461/9462/9560, which are the hardware variants to be fixed.
  ---
  For kernel version >= 4.19, it fails to pair with BT4.0 HID devices
  and leave error messages in syslog:
    Bluetooth: hci0: request failed to create LE connection: status 0x0c
  Which can be detailed by btmon:
    < HCI Command: LE Extended Create Connection (0x08|0x0043) plen 26 #800
  Filter policy: White list is not used (0x00)
    LE Extended Create Connection (0x08|0x0043) ncmd 1
  Status: Command Disallowed (0x0c)
  Indicating this is actually a firmware problem.
  Verified this has been fixed at least in upstream linux-firmware
  commit 29a536a02cadb75b84c6c0b5d7af22d34d278563, firmware release
  version 21.10.0.6. With that firmware blob placed under
  /lib/firmware/intel and a cold boot, dmesg gives updated revision and
  device pairing works as expected:
    Firmware revision 0.1 build 184 week 15 2019
[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1818974] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 Kernel 4.18 - Standby wakeup user session crash
2019-07-13 Thread Martin Dünkelmann
Thank you for your help.
4.18.0-25-generic kernel:
The last 2 times I put my laptop over night into sleep mode via the Kodi menu
and woke it up the next day I got the bpfilter and my user session was killed.
5.2.0-050200rc7-generic kernel:
Now I made a short test, put it into sleep mode via Kodi, did wait 20 minutes
and woke it up without problems.
It may be coincidence, I may should wait longer or test it over a longer
time period.
I'm only running LTS ubuntu versions with HWE, should I test it with
5.0, too?
[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1836435] Re: Mint 4.4.0-154 Boot Failure (scary)
2019-07-13 Thread Chris Guiver
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and normally it would
be converted into a question in the support tracker. We understand the
difficulties you are facing, but it is better to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs. You can also find help with your
problem in the support forum of your local Ubuntu community
http://loco.ubuntu.com/ or asking at https://askubuntu.com or
https://ubuntuforums.org. For help on reporting bugs, see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs.
The question has not been opened, as you are not using Ubuntu, or an
official flavor of Ubuntu, thus your question or support query should be
directed to a Linux Mint forum or site.
