[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1889342] Re: Thunderbolt Dock Loses Monitors

2020-09-27 Thread rhpot1991
The issue is still occurring.

Configuration - Laptop docked with screen closed, dual monitor on dock.
Linux unicron 5.6.0-1028-oem #28-Ubuntu SMP Tue Sep 8 13:34:39 UTC 2020 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I can reproduce it by doing the following:
1. Hit win+l to lock
2. Let monitors go to sleep
3. Try to wake up with keyboard/mouse
4. Unlock screen is not prompted, it seemingly shows up on the closed laptop.

See attached dmesg with errors.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1887190] Re: MSFT Touchpad not working on Lenovo Legion-5 15ARH05

2020-09-27 Thread Dimitar Kotsev
@Coiby Xu, @wangjun, Helmut (schinfo) thank you for saving the day.

I've `git cloned` 5.8.12-3 Manjaro kernel from GitLab and using this
post I installed it on my system. -> https://forum.manjaro.org/t/how-to-
compile-patch-kernel-with-custom-alsa-driver/20326/4

Everything works like a charm now.

Thank you all once again.

Bug description:
  Hello

The MSFT touchpad of this Lenovo Legion-5 15ARH05 laptop is not reacting at
all (pointer and click never move when touchpad is touched). This has been
reported by other users in various websites, with various linux systems
including other Ubuntu systems, but I saw no launchpad bug so I post one.
Example of websites covering the issue :
  - https://askubuntu.com/questions/1253830/lenovo-legion-5-touchpad (exactly
the same laptop)
  - https://www.linux.org/threads/lenovo-legion-5-touchpad.29536/ (similar
laptop)

xinput indentifies it as MSFT0001:00 04F3:3140

Bug description:
  General System Information:

  I have an »Asus ZenBook Pro 14 UX480« notebook and installed »Ubuntu
  19.10«. No dual boot.

  What I expected to happen:

  The touchpad should work.

  What happened instead

The touchpad was working after the fresh installation. However after
the first reboot it did not respond. After the next reboot it worked
again. Now it will work after every 10th reboot, all other times it
  wont.

Using an external mouse via USB is working.

The touchpad was not working at all in Ubuntu 18.04 and 19.04.

Title:
Kernel crash during USB device enumeration or mounting

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
Device is an Adafruit microcontroller board running
  https://github.com/adafruit/circuitpython, using the TinyUSB USB
  stack: https://github.com/hathach/tinyusb.

Device presents a composite USB device that includes MSC, CDC, HID, and MIDI
Device was commanded to forcibly reformat its MSC FAT12 filesystem and then
reset, which causes a USB reset and re-enumeration.

This causes some USB kernel code to crash, much of the time, though
  not quite all the time.

I work for Adafruit and the maintainer of TinyUSB also works for
Adafruit, so we can provide further help to track this down.

Attached is the dmesg file for the crash. I tried uploading the dump file
from kdump, but launchpad is timing out. The dump file is available at:
  https://drive.google.com/open?id=1ka3ySSccEMRSmnYgI9X16IndPDmIKTD6

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1894977] Re: IBM-iobrick patches for Ubuntu 20.04

2020-09-27 Thread Terry Rudd
The Canonical Stable kernel team continues to evaluate this rather large
and quite intrusive patch set. Put simply, this does not belong on a
stable kernel directly. That said, we continue to evaluate inclusion by
way of potentially including it via an HWE kernel and porting back over
time.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1895258] Re: rtnetlink.sh in net from ubuntu_kernel_selftests is returning 1 for a skipped test

2020-09-27 Thread Po-Hsu Lin
Checked with 4.15.0-1097.107~16.04.1, it will return SKIP now:
not ok 1..10 selftests: rtnetlink.sh [SKIP]

Title:
rtnetlink.sh in net from ubuntu_kernel_selftests is returning 1 for a
  skipped test

Status in ubuntu-kernel-tests:
  Fix Released
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in linux source package in Bionic:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  == SRU Justification ==
The rtnetlink.sh in kselftest/net from 4.15 kernel will fail with:
   selftests: rtnetlink.sh

   PASS: policy routing
   PASS: route get
   PASS: preferred_lft addresses have expired
   PASS: tc htb hierarchy
   PASS: gre tunnel endpoint
   PASS: bridge setup
   PASS: ipv6 addrlabel
PASS: set ifalias e1dfde61-e5a7-415f-8bd9-924e9796038f for test-dummy0
   PASS: vrf
   PASS: vxlan
   SKIP: fou: iproute2 too old
   SKIP: macsec: iproute2 too old
not ok 1..10 selftests: rtnetlink.sh [FAIL]

The return value for this script is 1.

Look into the code, it's the kci_test_encap_fou() test that causes
  this issue:

ip fou help 2>&1 |grep -q 'Usage: ip fou'
    if [ $? -ne 0 ];then
echo "SKIP: fou: iproute2 too old"
  return 1
    fi

It should at least return ksft_skip=4 (or 0 with older release that
does not support this skip code in kselftest framework)

  == Fix ==
  * 57aefc7c226d ("selftests: net: return Kselftest Skip code for
  skipped tests")

This patch needs to be backported into Bionic, as some newer tests
  does not exist in Bionic.

  == Test ==
Tested directly on the affected kernel, the test will be marked as:
not ok 1..10 selftests: rtnetlink.sh [SKIP]

  == Regression Potential ==
Low, changes limited to test scripts. And the kselftest framework in
Bionic can handle this ksft_skip=4 return code properly, tests won't
be marked as failed because of this.

Although IMO in this case the test should be marked as PASS instead of
SKIP in the end, as not all tests were skipped, but that's something
we could fix with upstream in the future.

System doesn't boot properly on Gigabyte AM4 motherboards (AMD Ryzen)

Status in Linux:
  Confirmed
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in linux source package in Zesty:
  Fix Released
Status in linux source package in Artful:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  [Impact]
Gigabyte AM4 boards users cannot boot Ubuntu successfully.
  Commit linux-gpio/fixes babdc22b0ccf4ef5a3075ce6e4afc26b7a279faf
"pinctrl/amd: Use regular interrupt instead of chained" can fix the issue.

  [Test Case]
All Gigabyte AM4 boards can reproduce the issue.
With the patch, the issue is resolved, per comment #170.

  [Regression Potential]
Regression Potential is low. It limits to rather new AMD platform which has
pinctrl-amd.
As the commit log says, use chained interrupt is not a good idea. Use regular
interrupt is the correct way.

I also test the patch on an AMD laptop, where its touchpad depends on
  pinctrl-amd. No regression found.

  Original bug report:
I'm trying to run ubuntu on Ryzen 1700x with Gigabyte GA-AB350-gaming-3
motherboard,
and it has a load of problems, starting with not being able to boot normally.

During normal boot, on 16.10 as well as 17.04 beta:
system doesn't boot normally, hangs with a lot of "unexpected irq trap at
vector 07"
  messages displayed.

Following advice from various places, I've tried:disable cpu freq
governor and cpu handling in acpi settings

  1. add "acpi=off" to boot params

That helps, allowing me to boot into recovery mode, though it leaves
me with system seeing only one core, is really slow and still only
  boots in recovery mode.

  2. Compile own kernel using 4.11.rc1 and disabling cpu freq governor
and cpu handling in acpi settings. Boot with "quiet loglevel=3"
  option.

That gets me even further - system sees all cores now. Still only recovery
mode though,
but its enough to get info for this bug report.

  Some observed problems:

  1. dmesg reports *a lot* of messages like this all the time:

  [  163.362068] ->handle_irq():  87a7e090,
  [ 163.362081] bad_chained_irq+0x0/0x40
  [  163.362089] ->handle_irq():  87a7e090,
  [ 163.362090] amd_gpio_irq_handler+0x0/0x200
  [  163.362090] ->irq_data.chip(): 88587e20,
  [ 163.362090] ioapic_ir_chip+0x0/0x120
  [  163.362090] ->action(): 884601c0
  [ 163.362091]IRQ_NOPROBE set
  [  163.362099] ->handle_irq():  87a7e090,
  [ 163.362099] amd_gpio_irq_handler+0x0/0x200
  [  163.362100] ->irq_data.chip(): 88587e20,
  [ 163.362100] ioapic_ir_chip+0x0/0x120
  [  163.362101] ->action(): 884601c0

I've tried to redirect dmesg to a file, stopped after a short while,
  it generated 400M of those.

  2. Systemd cannot start journald. Perhaps because it cannot cope with
  amount of kernel logs?

  3. Looking at pci, I've noticed something called AMDI0040
  (/sys/bus/acpi/devices/AMDI0040, path=_SB_.EMMC), among AMDI0010,
AMDI0020, AMDI0030. Those however are mentioned in kernel source,
kernel and google are completely silent about AMDI0040.

Phoronix tested ryzen using different motherboard, and it worked better
(though not well),
so I suspect it is an issue with motherboard.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1594023] Re: Poweroff or reboot hangs. Laptop won't shutdown. 16.04

I'm using dell 3543 and ubuntu 20.04

Title:
Poweroff or reboot hangs. Laptop won't shutdown. 16.04

Status in Ubuntu:
  New
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
This is about a fresh Ubuntu 16.04 install on a new laptop (asus
x540sa). After pressing the shutdown button in the start menu; the
shutdown procedure starts and in the final splash screen the system
just hangs. Tried a second time by pressing Esc once the splash screen
showed up and I saw that it reaches the line "Reached target shutdown"
and just stops there, no matter how long I leave it there the machine
  won't turn off.

I also tried a Kubuntu 16.04 fresh install on the same machine and it
hanged too at the final splash screen where the pulsating logo
stopped. Then I tried with Esc only to see the exact same line in the
  end.

The issue seems to affect lately quite many users as shown by the
google results of the past month / week or so.

I have also tried shutting down from the console with shutdown -and
all the parameters after that suggested online- and sudo poweroff but
unfortunately they didn't do the trick. The exact same situation
  occurred.

Unmounting the swap as suggested online doesn't work.

Also rebooting the system is not working either due to the same issue.

So right now the only way for me to poweroff the machine is to press
the power button on the keyboard continuously.

  Reproducible: Always

  Steps to Reproduce:
  1.Install OS
  2.Do something, anything or nothing
  3.Try to shutdown or reboot

  Actual Results:
The computer is not shutting down: "Reached target shutdown" and hangs there.

  Expected Results:
  Powering off the machine.

For what it's worth, closing the lid won't suspend the system, but
using the menu buttons for suspension will do it.

2020-09-27 Thread Bulat
Hey guys! Very excited and waited so much to the moment when this bug will be
fixed.
Any chances that the patch will be included into ubuntu mainline kernel build?
(something go wrong when I attempting to boot from the patched kernel: in the
very start says "Loading initial ramdisk" and hangs forever, tried to google
the issue, but no luck at this moment, plz contact me if you know(or have
ideas) the solution)
Thanks!

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1895449] Re: Internet disconnected unexpectly + Xorg freeze while watching html5 video in Chrome

2020-09-27 Thread Mike Gao
Sure. I'll send dmesg to you once the issue is triggered.

The audio doesn't cause function issue. The only problem is that
sometimes volume control keys don't work but I doubt if its related to
the error. I just think since it's a LTS version, might as well submit
patches that fix the audio error message as well?

Title:
Internet disconnected unexpectly + Xorg freeze while watching html5
  video in Chrome

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
  A few issues:

  1)With Intel(R) Wireless-AC 9560, under kernel 5.4 for Ubuntu 20.04.1,
the system sometimes gets disconnected with the network and I get the
  following error in syslog:

iwlwifi: BIOS contains WGDS but no WRDS

It is unclear if this is the cause of the problem, but this is likely
  related to kernel.

  2) Watching HTML5 videos on Chrome with Nvidia GPU (440 driver) will
sometimes cause xorg freeze. The exact cause is unknown. (Mouse,
control all freeze for 5-10 seconds)

  3) After Wake up from sleep got the following error on screen

sof-audio-pci error: no reply expected, received 0x0
iwlwifi: BIOS contains WGDS but no WRDS

  4) After wake up from a long sleep session, sometimes chrome will not
render web page correctly or even freeze. It is unclear if its a
Chrome problem, or a Nvidia problem, or a Kernel Problem.

2020-09-27 Thread Helmut Stult
@Coiby Xu (coiby)

You are the best !!!

First of all, thank you very much for the patch - it works perfectly.
All I had to do was add the fix from @wangjun (biggerchina).

Here is the link to the working patch:
https://gitlab.manjaro.org/packages/core/linux58/-/raw/master/0304-i2c-hid-core.patch?inline=false

The kernel 5.8.12-2 of Manjaro Linux 5.8.12-2 already contains it.
I will also include it in the 5.9-rc7.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1873083] Re: Lenovo Yoga C940 frequently does thermal shutdown

2020-09-27 Thread Éric St-Jean
While my problem is not exactly the same, i feel that it's so closely related
as to not warrant a separate bug.
I have a thinkpad x1 extreme gen3. Whenever i suspend, upon waking up, it shuts
down:
thermal thermal_zone3: critical temperature reached (128 C), shutting down

almost always zone3, sometimes zone4.
This is on my focal install, but i tried on a pristine focal live cd, as well
as a groovy daily live cd (from sept 26th), with the exact same result. Groovy
has thermald 2.3.

I *know* my laptop is not in overheat at that point. I can do this from
a cold laptop, on battery or on power at 100%, doing fine with
temperatures way low (~40 degC), suspend and wake up 10 seconds later
_and i still have that behavior. Whatever that sensor is reading did not
go from 40 to 128 in 10 seconds of suspend. I suspect a single bad
reading when it wakes up trips everything up.

I've tried thermal.nocrt, or thermal.crt=150, as kernel command lines
(and checked when booted that they were applied). That seems to only
impact the acpitz-acpi-0 zone, nothing else, and it still powers off
when waking up.

removing module int3403_thermal removes thermal_zone[1-8] in /sys/class/thermal
(interestingly, sensors still returns the same set, so either those zones
aren't to do with the cpu or anything else sensors returns, or sensors goes
through something else to get its values?)

and suspend now works fine.

happy to do some more digging, i'd obviously prefer to un-blacklist this
module but now at least i can suspend

Title:
Lenovo Yoga C940 frequently does thermal shutdown

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:

Status in thermald package in Ubuntu:

  New

Bug description:
On a bit higher load and especially if Laptop is charging, very often
Kernel does an emergency thermal shutdown.

thermal thermal_zone3: critical temperature reached (80 C), shutting
  down

It says 80 C, but sensors command shows that temperatures hovering
close to 100C before the shutdown happens.

dmesg is often also full of these (for each core):
mce: CPU2: Core temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled (total
events = 246766)

When I boot to Windows, it seems that CPU is throttled more
aggressively on load and thermal shutdown doesn't happen with a
similar load, but CPU frequencies drop to 1600 range, while in Ubuntu
  they are 2800 range.

I would rather have more throttling that computer shutting down
randomly without the ability to save work.

  Is there a workaround?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1737671] Re: Blu-ray burner no longer detected

2020-09-27 Thread David Gottwald
I think I am also affected by this issue. Can I do any support/testing to find
a solution?
My Blu-ray burner is not detecting Blu-ray discs any more. And only Blu-ray
discs (tried several) are affected, DVD for example works fine.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1895563] Re: Kernel Oops: Rsyncing to bcache device w/o backing cache kernel panic

2020-09-27 Thread Brendan Boerner
groovy: 20.10: 5.8.0-19-generic: incremental, no dry-run: Success (no
panic).

Kernel version bisection:

cosmic: 18.10: 4.18.0-25-generic: incremental, dry-run: panic
disco: 19.04: 5.0.0-13-generic: incremental, dry-run: success. 105m19s
(*insanely* fast).

Attempted revision bisection

Within disco tree:

git checkout -b mybisect origin/master
git bisect start
git bisect good Ubuntu-4.18.0-12.13
git bisect bad Ubuntu-5.0.0-10.11

This set my HEAD to:

commit 94710cac0ef4ee177a63b5227664b38c95bbf703 (HEAD, tag: v4.18)
Author: Linus Torvalds
Date: Sun Aug 12 13:41:04 2018 -0700

Linux 4.18

I then did a 'Kernel made' e.g.

cp -a /boot/config-`uname -r` .config
make oldconfig
make clean
custom=bbb01
make -j $(nproc) deb-pkg LOCALVERSION=-${custom}

The resulting kernel would boot but I could not ssh to it. systemctl
would return error about not being able to connect to dbus.

I assumed there are Ubuntu specific bits to the kernel which systemctl
requires so aborted.

  Short problem description:

Rsyncing from a 1.4TB home dir to a an new filesystem on a bcache
device without an attached cache eventually results in kernel panic.

What I expected to happen: no kernel panic.

  Long problem description:

  1) Devices / Filesystems:

bfd01: 8*4TB configured as RAID6 using md LVM2 volume group.
  bfd02: 8*4TB configured as RAID6 using Dell PERC H810 LVM2 volume group.

The tree contains 1069685 files / dirs.

  2) Steps to reproduce:

  # Make the device, format and mount it
  make-bcache -B /dev/vg-bfd02/delme01_bc
  mkfs.xfs -f -L delme01bc /dev/bcache0
  mount /dev/bcache0 /dev/bfd02/delme01bc

  time rsync $flags $info_cmd $excludes $src/ $tgt/
  ...
  # eventually kernel panic

Using incremental rsync it will kernel panic after reading about 21GB.

  # If instead I use non-incremental rsync it will kernel panic after
  reading about 1.2-1.3TB.

  flags="--no-inc-recursive -ax -HAXS --delete" ; info_cmd="--info=progress2" ;
excludes="";
  ...
  # eventually kernel panic

  Additional detail:

  1) I was *not* able to reproduce if bfd01/delm01bc was a target and
  bfd02 was the source e.g.

  # Rsync
  flags="-a --delete" ; info_cmd="--info=progress2" ; excludes="";
  src=/mnt/bfd02/delme01 ; tgt=/mnt/bfd01/delme01bc/ ;
  time rsync $flags $info_cmd $excludes $src/ $tgt/
  ...

  2) I was *not* able to reproduce if I attached and then detached a cache set:

  ceho 'd3b93488-714e-4efa-af94-cd80fd2db11f' > /sys/block/bcache0/bcache/attach
  echo 1 > /sys/block/bcache0/bcache/detach
  ...
  time rsync $flags $info_cmd $excludes $src/ $tgt/
  ...
  # rsync completes successfully

I have 11 compressed kernel crash dumps. I will upload 3 after filing this.
Let me know if you want the other 8.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1897392] Re: Ryzen 4800u, kernel 5.8.11 boot errors (AMD-Vi, ACPI, HDCP, Bluetooth)

2020-09-27 Thread rud
Ah unfortunately before I switched to Ubuntu, there was no bios update. Lenovo
does not provide anything to update the bios, only an unextractable Windows
exe.
I will figure out a way to install Windows on a portable drive (Win2USB).
Pretty bad manufacturers no longer provide a way to update bios independently
from what OS is used.

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  General System Information:

  I have an »Asus ZenBook Pro 14 UX480« notebook and installed »Ubuntu
  19.10«. No dual boot.

  What I expected to happen:

  The touchpad should work.

  What happened instead

The touchpad was working after the fresh installation. However after
the first reboot it did not respond. After the next reboot it worked
again. Now it will work after every 10th reboot, all other times it
  wont.

Using an external mouse via USB is working.

The touchpad was not working at all in Ubuntu 18.04 and 19.04.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1884940] Re: after login to gnome, kern.log slowly fills with snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1f.3: No response from codec

2020-09-27 Thread Gilbertf
The only way to get sound back is to : remove power. turn off laptop
Wait a few minutes until sound card is totally off and resets itself to its
standard state
And boot laptop again

Something in the kernel is putting the intel sound card in a state that
prevents it from working again on next reboot or wake up until the
machine is turned off and power source removed

This was not occuring on previous kernels.

Problem is still there on latest kernel
Today booted twice the PC : 2 reboots.
Aldo tried turn off then on

Syslog fills every second with the soundcard error messages
No sound
Launching anything is extremely slow
Rebooting or turning off the laptop takes several minutes of errors.

Same problem with 20.04.1 LTS on Dell G3 3590.

Cannot log in, but if I plug in HDMI cable AFTER logging in - it works.
Until next restart, when I need to repeat the whole procedure again.

Title:
Ubuntu 20.04 HDMI connected, no boot

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I have installed Ubuntu 20.04 (using the image created on 20 april) on
my Dell XPS15 9560. This laptop has a Intel / nVidia combo.

The problem i am facing is that when i have an external monitor
connected to the laptop through the HDMI connector of the laptop,
Ubuntu does not boot and hangs on the splash screen. I have not found
any way to get logging on any kind.

Before i was running Ubuntu 18.04 and did not have any problems with
the monitor and HDMI cable. After boot is finished (without monitor
connected) inserting the HDMI cable works fine and i can use the
monitor and laptop screen without any problem.

I have installed the preferred nVida proprietary driver. Also it does
not matter if booting with nVidia selected or Intel selected.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1874194] Re: Ubuntu 20.04 HDMI connected, no boot

2020-09-27 Thread Dominik Derwiński
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1872159 ***

Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH05 with Ryzen 7 4800H, Radeon graphics disabled in
BIOS, NVIDIA GTX 1650, Mint 20, kernel 5.4.0-48-generic.

Doesn't boot with HDMI plugged in, when plugged later it works normally.
Removing quiet splash or adding nomodeset xforcevesa doesn't change
anything.

I rapidly tested Ubuntu Mate Focal fresh install: I had exactly the

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1897416] Re: grub 2.04 could not boot from iso at UEFI native environment

2020-09-27 Thread Woodrow Shen
Hi can you try to add nomodeset into kernel parameter? basically 20.04
image should work with UEFI/secure boot, and that's what I did set up
for all my machines/laptops. For example, one of my machines is Intel
NUC7 and it was installed by 20.04. Or, Maybe you can update BIOS if it
has the latest version available.

single ACPI device entry can represent up to 4 USB PD controllers. The
problem is that there is no way to know which IRQ resource belongs to
  which I2CSerialBus resource :-(.

Andy, this is one of those multi-instantiate I2C slave devices with
  HID INT3515.

The only solution I can think of is that we start maintaining DMI
quirk table in drivers/platform/x86/i2c-multi-instantiate.c where we
supply the correct i2c to irq resource mapping for every platform
  that has this device(s)."
