Bug description:
  [Impact]
Bogus HDMI audio can be selected as output, without any HDMI monitor
  connected.

  [Fix]
Consider 0 SAD as invalid ELD - no SAD means no audio.

  [Test]
With the patch applied, no bogus HDMI audio can be found in GNOME's
  setting app.

  [Where problems could occur]
Basically none. No SAD means no PCM - so it has never worked before.

The mouse pointer randomly dissappears (same behavior in ubuntu 20.04 LTS and

When this occurs all other mouse operations still function
  - left/right click

Bug description:
  [Impact]

KFENCE devs are changing CONFIG_KFENCE_STATIC_KEYS to be disabled by
default, because it's introducing more problems than benefits:

  https://lore.kernel.org/all/20211019102524.2807208-2-el...@google.com/T/#u

This also seems to trigger QEMU bugs during the systemd autopkgtest, like:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/qemu/+bug/1920934

  [Test case]

  Run systemd autopkgtest.

  [Fix]

  Disable CONFIG_KFENCE_STATIC_KEYS.

  [Regression potential]

We may experience an overall performance regression for not using
static branches in the KFENCE code.

setgid files may be created on setgid directories owned by the directory
group by users not belonging to that group. That is restricted to XFS.

  [Fix/Backport]
The fix for 5.11 and 5.10 kernels is one simple commit with a minor
  backport conflict fixup on 5.10.

5.4, on the other hand, required other 3 pre-requisites, which could be
picked cleanly. On 4.15, however, they needed a lot of mangling and fixes.

  [Test case]
  creat09 LTP test case.

  [Potential regression]
The creation of files on XFS may have the wrong attributes. Also, on 5.4
and 4.15, the potential regression is larger, also affecting quota,
statistics and other interfaces where uid, gid and projid are exposed.

  [SRU Justification]

  [Impact]
On some platforms with Cirrus CS8409 audio codec, the external headset will
fail to be detected after system resume.

  [Fix]
Cirrus released a new fix commit 65cc4ad62a9e ('ALSA: hda/cs8409: Set PMSG_ON
earlier inside cs8409 driver'). It sets the power_state to ON before the
unsolicited event arrives to make sure the jack detection can be invoked after
resume.

  [Test]
Plug-in an external headset in front headset port, suspend/resume the system
then check whether the headset function works as expected.

  [Where problem could occur]
Low. It only affect the platforms with Cirrus codec CS8409 which used to have
problem.

  == Original Bug Description ==

[Summary] System can't detect external headset after suspend

  [Steps to reproduce]
  1. install manifest and boot into OS
  2. plug-in an external headset in front headset port
  3. un-plug external headset
  4. suspend system
  5. resume system from suspend
  6. plug-in an external headset

  [Expected result]
System could detect external headset after suspend

  [Actual result]
System can't detect external headset after suspend

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:

Status in linux source package in Impish:

Status in linux source package in Jammy:

Bug description:
  [Impact]

On some thinkpads we may get a kernel panic at boot, because the
elantech driver (trakcpad) can trigger out-of-bounds access in the
  stack.

  [Test case]

Simply boot the kernel on one of the affected systems (e.g., Thinkpad
  E14 Gen2).

  [Fix]

Prevent the stack out of bound access by applying the following
  upstream commit (from linux-next):

1d72d9f960cc ("Input: elantech - fix stack out of bound access in
  elantech_change_report_id()")

  [Regression potential]

The fix is touching the elantech driver, so we could only see
regressions with this specific trackpad/mouse driver.

  [Original bug report]

I installed the Ubuntu 21.10 beta and as soon as I boot I get the
kernel panic that I am attaching.

I also installed Ubuntu 21.04 and upgraded, as soon as I boot with the
5.13 kernel I get the same problem, disabling the trackpad and
trackpoint in the bios the problem disappears.

Everything works with the 5.11 kernel.
I remain available for further details and sorry for my lack of experience.

Title:
Thinkpad E14 Gen2: Kernel panic with trackpad and trackpoint enabled

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in linux source package in Impish:
  Fix Released
Status in linux source package in Jammy:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  [Impact]

On some thinkpads we may get a kernel panic at boot, because the
elantech driver (trakcpad) can trigger out-of-bounds access in the
  stack.

  [Test case]

Simply boot the kernel on one of the affected systems (e.g., Thinkpad
  E14 Gen2).

  [Fix]

Prevent the stack out of bound access by applying the following
  upstream commit (from linux-next):

1d72d9f960cc ("Input: elantech - fix stack out of bound access in
  elantech_change_report_id()")

I remain available for further details and sorry for my lack of experience.

https://patchwork.kernel.org/project/intel-gfx/patch/20210325120947.11950-1-anshuman.gu...@intel.com/

Wa_14010685332 sequence toggles a SDE chicken bit on and then off as
the final step when disabling interrupts in preparation for runtime
suspend. And this sequence also fixes the issues that
dispcnlunit1_cp_xosc_clkreq clock keeps to be active on TGL-H during
  s2idle.

  v2.
  8b46cc6577f4 drm/i915: Tweaked Wa_14010685332 for all PCHs

  [Test]
Verified on the Dell machines with AX201 BT on them.

  [Where problems may occur]
This patch extend the s0ix fix from gen8 and gen11 to CNP, ICP, JSP, MCC,
TGP, and ADP PCHs, and also move the Wa_14010685332 sequence from reset
functions to suspend/resume functions. It won't affect old chips as there is a
if statement to check the pch type, and new chips require this sequence to work
well.

That did not help either. I also tried rc6, but the results was the
same. No output even when quiet and splash kernel parameters were
removed.

but after suspend and resume it starts working again, until the next
boot. I had the same problem earlier and it was fixed here:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1939638 , but the
bug got reintroduced in kernel 5.4.0-90-generic most likely due to
  this patch:

  * Fix cold plugged USB device on certain PCIe USB cards (LP: #1945211)
   - Revert "UBUNTU: SAUCE: Revert "usb: core: reduce power-on-good delay time
of
root hub""

I'm running Ubuntu 20.04. USB2 ports work without problems.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1939210] Re: When using HWE, zfs-kmod and zfs user tools versions must match

2021-12-20 Thread N. X.
I feel like this is a subject that needs to be resolved.

Recently when I tried using zfs send and receive from ubuntu to a fresh install
of ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS.
I could 'ten receive the dataset properly.

After looking at the net I discovered that the ZFS kmod and User tools didn’t
match.
Because this fresh install of Ubuntu 20.04.3 had HWE kernel by default and that
meant the ZFS kmod and user tools In the LTS repository didn’t match.

According to OpenZFS github this is a very bad thing.

Basically when one chooses an Ubuntu LTS. Its because it is the stable version
of ubuntu with no breaking changes.
Making HWE kernel be the default does the exact opposite of this and actually
makes a breaking change to ZFS and that is exactly what is not supposed to
happen.

But for some reason canonical is overlooking this on ZFS where people
store there important files.

This is still a breaking change and in the future it could potentially
lead to data loss which would cause a huge uproar when people start
loosing their files because a new kernel had a kmod that didn’t match
the user space tools in the repositories.

I really feel like canonical should have a look at this and understand
this does exactly what it is not supposed to do on an LTS. It gives
breaking changes by having the HWE kernel pr. default and not having the
option to use a matching ZFS user tools In their repo.

In the end I manually had to install Linux-image-generic and accompanying
modules, modules-extra and headers packages.
Then remove anything related to HWE kernel to make sure I never booted on the
wrong kernel with the mismatching kmod/userspace of zfs.

And after that I had no ZFS send/receive problems

I would just wish I could get a corresponding zfsutils-linux that
matches the HWE kernel so that I can stay on the latest kernel without
breaking ZFS.

Title:
When using HWE, zfs-kmod and zfs user tools versions must match

Status in zfs-linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS

I ran into a problem recently
  (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/zfs-linux/+bug/1939177) due
to mismatched versions when HWE upgraded the kernel from 5.8 to 5.11
where the userspace tools don't match the zfs-kmod version. After the
update the system ended up with zfs-0.8.3-1ubuntu12.12 and zfs-
  kmod-2.0.2-1ubuntu5

My understanding from asking in the OpenZFS github is that the two
  versions must match.

This bug is to figure out what to do for those of us who use HWE and
  zfs.

Title:
  Webcam integrated microphone produces noise

Status in linux-signed-hwe-5.11 package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Technical information:
  Description: Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS
  Release: 20.04

Recently I bought a "Jieli Technology USB PHY 2.0" which is a cheap webcam
with an integrated microphone. The webcam behaves just fine, where the
microphone outputs noise.

Looking at dmesg, the log is spammed with:
  [ 3657.927446] xhci_hcd :00:14.0: WARN: buffer overrun event for slot 4
ep 4 on endpoint

  I've applied [this
patch](https://mailman.alsa-project.org/pipermail/alsa-devel/2020-December/178361.html)
manually on linux-source-5.4.0.tar.bz2 to see if the microphone works after
that.
Unfortunately the microphone wasn't detected by pulseaudio and I've tried
tuning values with guvcview, but to no avail.

I'm about to test another patch for this issue.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
Platforms with AX201 BT fail to pass the power consumption tests

  [Fix]
Intel provides us the patch to fix it.

https://patchwork.kernel.org/project/intel-gfx/patch/20210325120947.11950-1-anshuman.gu...@intel.com/

It won't affect old chips as there is a
if statement to check the pch type, and new chips require this sequence to work
well.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
Platforms with AX201 BT fail to pass the power consumption tests

  [Fix]
Intel provides us the patch to fix it.

https://patchwork.kernel.org/project/intel-gfx/patch/20210325120947.11950-1-anshuman.gu...@intel.com/

It won't affect old chips as there is a
if statement to check the pch type, and new chips require this sequence to work
well.

  Description: Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS
  Release: 20.04

Recently I bought a "Jieli Technology USB PHY 2.0" which is a cheap webcam
with an integrated microphone. The webcam behaves just fine, where the
microphone outputs noise.

Looking at dmesg, the log is spammed with:
  [ 3657.927446] xhci_hcd :00:14.0: WARN: buffer overrun event for slot 4
ep 4 on endpoint

  I've applied [this
patch](https://mailman.alsa-project.org/pipermail/alsa-devel/2020-December/178361.html)
manually on linux-source-5.4.0.tar.bz2 to see if the microphone works after
that.
Unfortunately the microphone wasn't detected by pulseaudio and I've tried
tuning values with guvcview, but to no avail.

I'm about to test another patch for this issue.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1955304] Re: Webcam integrated microphone produces noise

2021-12-20 Thread Erik Nijenhuis
After applying the patch on ubuntu-focal hwe-5.11, the microphone was found,
and was producing sound.
Though, the quality is like I'm sitting in the bathroom.
I have no clue on how it sounds on a Windows PC, so I really have no clue what
quality to expect.
I fear that there's nothing to do about it, since I've bought it for €10,-.
