Bug description:
  Hi Ubuntu Kernel Team,

  I notice this today.
  This option CONFIG_IRQ_TIME_ACCOUNTING is not enabled in Ubuntu Noble 6.8
Kernel.
  Is possible to add this at built-in?

  # CONFIG_IRQ_TIME_ACCOUNTING is not set

  It would help me for profiling in the future, when testing
  applications in the performance area.

Title:
  ath11k high jitter and packet loss when operating in 802.11ax mode

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  On 6.5.0-26-generic, my QCNFA765 cannot really operate in 802.11ax
  mode.

  I have a Thinkpad P16s Gen 2 with a (soldered, sadly) QCNFA765 card, which
uses the ath11k driver.
  I also have a Ruckus R650 AP, which supports wifi6.

  Connecting the two and pinging the AP yields the following:

  ```
  64 bytes from 192.168.16.77: icmp_seq=45 ttl=64 time=22.4 ms
  64 bytes from 192.168.16.77: icmp_seq=46 ttl=64 time=29.6 ms
  ```

  Those periodic bursts of >1s latency make some webpages fail to load
  and videochats unusable.

  No interference is present in my channel of choice.

  Nothing interesting is printed in dmesg while the above occurs.

  The above does not happen if:
  * I disable wifi 6 in the AP
  * I ping a wifi 5 AP (I also have an older R710, which is a 802.11ac AP)
  * I ping the R650 in wifi 6 mode from a AX210 on kernel 6.2
  * I ping the R650 from a completely different OS and device (e.g. Android)

  I'll test with a 24.04 daily image next.

Title:
  vp9 hw decode broken on modern AMD apus, needs amdgpu update

Status in linux-firmware package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Current version of amdgpu binaries in linux-firmware shipped with
  ubuntu 22.04 (jammy) and ubuntu 23.10 (mantic) create various problems
  when decoding VP9 content with the iGPU on modern AMD mobile processor
  (rembrant and phoenix, i.e. 6xxxU/H, 7x40U/H and 7x35U/H processor).

  The issue has been reported and solved upstream:

  https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/issues/8044

  [EDIT: fixed link]

  Solution dates to the end of February: https://gitlab.com/kernel-
  firmware/linux-
  firmware/-/commit/977332782302476e1c863b09b840f463d0378807

  Ubuntu 24.04 already ships the updated binaries and should not be
  affected.

  Steps to reproduce:
  * on an affected system play a VP9 video with hardware decoding

  Additional links:
  *
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git/commit/?id=977332782302476e1c863b09b840f463d0378807
  * https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2267714
  * https://www.phoronix.com/news/AMDGPU-Firmware-Fixes-VP9

  Workaround:
  * download the amdgpu folder from upstream linux-firmware repos
  * compress each file with zstd
  * copy into /lib/firmware/amdgpu
  * regenerate the initrd

  I'm currently running ubuntu 23.10 (mantic) with binaries from
  upstream and the issue is solved.

Bug description:
  [SRU Justifications]

  == kernels ==

  [Impact]
  On Dell's Precision 3550, Intel MTL platform, the MIC-Mute function is
working but the LED(on F4) state is not changed accordingly.

  [Fix]
  There's no problem on the same series on RPL platform. It needs MTL specific
SoF driver and controls to support the registered mixer switch. It requires the
patches in
https://lore.kernel.org/all/20230919103115.30783-1-peter.ujfal...@linux.intel.com/
 and
https://lore.kernel.org/all/20230814232325.86397-1-pierre-louis.boss...@linux.intel.com/

  [Test Case]
  1. press mic-mute hot-key and check if mic-mute is enabled or not by the OSD
icon.
  2. The mic-mute led should be ON when mic-mute enabled, OFF when disabled.

  [Where problems could occur]
  It's only required for new sof-audio-pci-intel-mtl driver. The impact should
be restricting.

  == firmware-sof ==

  [Impact]
  The mic-mute led not working on Intel MTL powered laptops.

  [Fix]
  For firmware-sof, it required the upstream commit fdc884baa4b3 ("Add
sof-ipc4-v2.8.1/mtl/, intel-signed + community") and the
sof-hda-generic-2ch.tplg from v2.8.1 to make sure the ipc4 topology and control
matches with the updated driver.

  [Test Case]
  1. enable -proposed pocket and install firmware-sof-signed
  2. press mic-mute hot-key and check if mic-mute is enabled or not by the OSD
icon.

  [Where problems could occur]
  The updated sof-mtl.ri and the sof-hda-generic-2ch.tplg are shared by all
Intel MTL platforms. Need to verify audio function on MTL enpowered machines.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1970069] Re: Annoying boot messages interfering with splash screen

2024-03-24 Thread Daniel van Vugt
That commit is not meant to reflect the outcome of discussions that
happened after it (comment #93). It's just an intermediate "UNRELEASED"
commit reflecting intermediate development.

My intent with shared repos like this is to show what is being worked on
before anything is released to the archive. The tags still accurately
reflect what reached or was proposed to the archive.

  Annoying boot messages interfering with splash screen

Status in initramfs-tools package in Ubuntu:

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:

Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

  Kernel (and systemd) log messages appear during boot for many
  machines, when the user should be seeing only the BIOS logo and/or
  Plymouth splash screens.

  [ Workaround ]

  On most machines you can hide the problem by using these kernel parameters
together:
    quiet splash loglevel=3 fastboot

  [ Original Description ]

  Since upgrading from 20.04.6 Desktop to 22.04, the boot screen is not
  as clean as it used to be.

  Basically, the flow used to be in 20.04:

  GRUB > Splash screen > Login prompt

  Currently in 22.04:

  GRUB > Splash screen > Messages (in the attached file) > Splash screen
  again for a sec > Login prompt

  All of those messages already existed in 20.04, the difference is that
  they were not appearing during boot.

  I was able to get rid of the "usb" related messages by just adding
  "loglevel=0" in GRUB. Currently is "quiet loglevel=0 splash".

  Regarding the fsck related message, I can get rid of them by adding
  "fsck.mode=skip".

  However, I do not want to just disable fsck or set the loglevel to 0.
  This is not a sustainable solution.

  Something definitely changed here. These messages are not of enough
  relevance to be shown at boot by default, and they should remain
  hidden like they were in Focal.

  Obviously a minor issue, but important to the whole look and feel of
  the OS for desktop.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2054121] Re: Random whole system lockups on Lenovo ThinkStation P350 Tiny

2024-03-24 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I would not give up on NVIDIA just yet. No one else with NVIDIA hardware
is reporting an issue like this so it's just as likely a problem with
some other kernel driver or system component.

That said, unless you want to experiment with swapping components (like
the NVIDIA card or RAM) then changing to a new PC would be the fastest
solution.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2055283] Re: Intel Bluetooth AX201 needs firmware intel/ibt-0180-4150.sfi

2024-03-24 Thread Hui Wang
Verification for jammy:

Install the ubuntu jammy on the machine in question, enable proposed
ppa, run sudo apt-get update, run sudo apt install linux-firmware, the
inux-firmware/20230919.git3672ccab-0ubuntu2.10 is installed.

reboot the machine, check dmesg, there is no "loading firmware failure"
log, connect a bt headset (PLT_BBTGO2), the bt headset could pair, play
sound and capture sound.

Verification done on jammy.

  BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2055283

  [Impact]

  We have an Lenovo laptop, after installing the oem-ubuntu-22.04 image
  and booting up, the bluetooth couldn't work at all. Checking the dmesg,
  the bluetooth driver needs to load the firmware intel/ibt-0180-4150.sfi,
  but there is no this firmware in the linux-firmware of Jammy, and I
  also checked the Mantic and Noble, Mandic doesn't have this firmware too,
  Noble already has the firmware since the upstream linux-firmware integrated
  the intel/ibt-0180-4150.sfi last year.

  [Fix]

  Backport 4 commits from upstream linux-firmware, these 4 commits are all
  on intel/ibt-0180-4150.sfi|ddc

  [Test Case]

  Put the firmware into the /lib/firmware/intel/, reboot the machine,
  check dmesg, the bluetooth driver loads the firmware successfully,

  run hciconfig, the hci0 shows up.

  run checkbox testcase, it could pass.
  [Checkbox job `com.canonical.certification::bluetooth/detect-output` output]

  [Where problems could occur]

  Probably could make the Intel AX201 BT adapter couldn't work, but the
possibility
  is very low, we tested the firmware on different lenovo machines with the BT
adapter
  AX201, all worked well.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2055283] Re: Intel Bluetooth AX201 needs firmware intel/ibt-0180-4150.sfi

2024-03-24 Thread Hui Wang
Verification for mantic:

Install the ubuntu mantic on the machine in question, enable proposed
ppa, run sudo apt-get update, run sudo apt install linux-firmware, the
linux-firmware/20230919.git3672ccab-0ubuntu2.10 is installed.

reboot the machine, check dmesg, there is no "loading firmware failure"
log, connect a bt headset (PLT_BBTGO2), the bt headset could pair, play
sound and capture sound.

Verification done on mantic.

  Display Corruption on Chuwi Minibook X N100 (Regression)

  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Ubuntu Release: 24.04 Noble Numbat (development branch)
  Package: linux-image-6.8.0-11-generic
  Version: 6.8.0-11.11

  What was expected:
  An image to be displayed on the integrated screen of the laptop free from
corruption.

  What happened instead:
  When booting using the specified kernel, the integrated screen displays a
corrupted image. A photo of the corruption has been attached. The photo of the
corruption is of the laptop running a different distro (Fedora) but the
behavior is identical and is common across many distros.
  This display corruption occurs only on the laptop's integrated display. No
corruption is present on external displays.
  This display corruption was not present when using
linux-image-6.6.0-14-generic.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2058830] Re: vp9 hw decode broken on modern AMD apus, needs amdgpu update

2024-03-24 Thread Andrea Agnolin
** Description changed:

  Current version of amdgpu binaries in linux-firmware shipped with ubuntu
  22.04 (jammy) and ubuntu 23.10 (mantic) create various problems when
  decoding VP9 content with the iGPU on modern AMD mobile processor
  (rembrant and phoenix, i.e. 6xxxU/H, 7x40U/H and 7x35U/H processor).

  The issue has been reported and solved upstream:

- https://gitlab.com/kernel-firmware/linux-
- firmware/-/commit/977332782302476e1c863b09b840f463d0378807
+ https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/issues/8044
+
+ [EDIT: fixed link]

  Solution dates to the end of February: https://gitlab.com/kernel-
  firmware/linux-
  firmware/-/commit/977332782302476e1c863b09b840f463d0378807

  Ubuntu 24.04 already ships the updated binaries and should not be
  affected.

  Steps to reproduce:
  * on an affected system play a VP9 video with hardware decoding

  Additional links:
  *
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git/commit/?id=977332782302476e1c863b09b840f463d0378807
  * https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2267714
  * https://www.phoronix.com/news/AMDGPU-Firmware-Fixes-VP9

  Workaround:
  * download the amdgpu folder from upstream linux-firmware repos
  * compress each file with zstd
  * copy into /lib/firmware/amdgpu
  * regenerate the initrd

  I'm currently running ubuntu 23.10 (mantic) with binaries from upstream
  and the issue is solved.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2047022] Re: WiFi is not work after upgrade Kernel to 6.5.0-14-generic

2024-03-24 Thread Terrian
FTR Kernel 6.5.0-25 fixed the problem for me; using > 2 weeks now.

I posted the previous comment #29 (can no longer edit it) about how
previous 6.5 kernels caused unstable/broken wifi.

ASUS GA15 Zephyrus
AMD Ryzen 9 6900HS
MB GA503RM
NW Mediatek 7922

Prior to the 6.5.0-25 update, was using grub to force kernel 6.2.x so I
could maintain reliable wifi. Happily the bug seems fixed now, in my
case at least.

I'm agreeing with desktop in following Fedora to bump to 1048576, the
precedence makes this safe, and this I consider this a bug fix for
crashing software and not a feature request.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2043208] Re: Headset microphone not properly recognized after 23.10 upgrade

Title:
  Headset microphone not properly recognized after 23.10 upgrade

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  [description]

  My wired headset (hyperx cloud 2) has a built in microphone that was
  working perfectly fine in 22.10 and 23.04 on my system. But after
  upgrading to 23.10 most of the time when plugging it into the
  headphone jack of my machine, audio output works perfectly fine
  however the microphone is often not recognized. Running "systemctl
  --user restart pipewire pipewire-pulse wireplumber" a few times often
  causes the microphone to be recognized by the system but applications
  such as firefox wouldn't recognize it. Restarting the machine usually
  would make applications able to detect and use the microphone.

  [possible solution]

  I have found a few reports of people having similar issues as me after
upgrading to 23.10 and I was even able to find on the french ubuntu forums a
possible fix where manually installing kernel 6.6rc5 or above has fixed the
issue: https://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?id=2081994
  I couldn't verify this solution for myself since I an still running the
default 6.5 kernel that came with Mantic but I did find another user on
askubuntu who upgraded to the 6.6rc5 kernel and had his microphone issues
resolved:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1490935/built-in-microphone-not-detected-after-installing-ubuntu-23-10
  This thread also referenced the "forum.ubuntu-fr.org" forum.
  My specific issue might be pipewire related and not kernel related but based
on the number of reports I've seen that 6.6rc5 fixes the issue (6.6rc1 did not
based on the reports) the issue is also kernel related to some extent.

  [system]
  Dell XPS 17 9720, intel core i9 12900HK, RTX 3060 6GB + intel iris Xe
  Kubuntu 23.10 using wayland with plasma 5.27.8
  nvidia driver: 545.29.02 (proprietary). I also had the same issue on 535
driver
  Headset: Hyperx cloud II with the default microphone that came with the
headset (microphone is detachable)
  uname -r: 6.5.0-10-generic
  Headset and microphone work perfectly fine on other systems

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2057792] Re: Some Games are crashing linked to a vm_max_map_count too low

2024-03-24 Thread vince
Hello Sebastien,

I agree with you.

The value 2147483642 is the value purposed by TKG kernel, but as
mentioned in my report, if the value is > 200k well issues in game is
over.

I think, the fedora value is a good approach because we already have
return of their experience, and there is no trouble linked about this
value reported in the fedora side.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2057792] Re: Some Games are crashing linked to a vm_max_map_count too low

2024-03-24 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thanks for the report.

So

- the kernel default and current value is 65530

- Fedora changed to 1048576
(https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/systemd/blob/rawhide/f/10-map-
count.conf) which was enough according to their testing

- you are suggesting 2147483642 , which is several order of magnitude
higher

Unsure if there are possible side effects or downside of having a too
high value but it's late in the cycle and 1048576 seems like a more
reasonable default

@Julian I think from a Desktop perspective we are +1 on bumping to at least
1048576, technically that should be done in systemd I think. It that a
FFe/change that you/foundations are wanting to work on?

Bug description:
  Hello there,

  I submit this request to improve the gaming experience in ubuntu for all
users.
  Today, Hogwarts Legacy, Star Citizen and few more games are crashing or just
not starting because the vm_max_map_count is locked at 65530. If we change this
value to a value > 20, all games are working well and there is no bug
linked to maps.

  Some others distribution like Fedora or Pop OS, have already made the
  change few month before.

  It's time to Ubuntu to makes the change also.

  Thanks in advance for applying this request.

  How to make this change :

  One file to modify :
  /etc/sysctl.conf
  Add this line :
  vm.max_map_count=2147483642
  Save
  Reboot and enjoy

  Best Regards
  Vinceff
