You should be able to determine if this does work in one of those older
kernel by booting the system into one of them via the grub menu. That
would be a good test to confirm it is not just working sometimes
randomly.

From my reading of the changes between the .23 and .25 kernels you could
only be affected if you were using a compatibility interface which is
only used if you use i386 binaries on amd64, otherwise the altered code

To be clear, the issue here is that the trusty kernel implements
mitigation of networking and the profiles in precise do not contain
support for this. The patches applied allow the backport to be
configured without this functionality.

3.13.0-14 kernel.

@Chris -- I have taken the liberty of cleaning up the commentary on
those two patches and applying them to a 14.04 kernel for testing. You
might want to do something similar (feel free to steal the text I used
and clean it up) and then submit the patches together to upstream for
consideration; as
This ought to be in the appropriate images now, and available for
testing.
