I have the problem of 14.04 getting to the desktop then crashing to a
reboot after a few seconds.
Both have MSI-FM2-A55M-E33 motherboards but the AMD APUs differ (one's
an A8, one an A6).
The cure for me, spotted elsewhere here, is to add
nomodeset
to the boot options.

Not even a distro upgrade, just a regular software update that required
a restart. Thanks for the solution. Now can a mod come and "un-expire"
this since this is a problem on the latest kernel?

art - I suspect this is whenever something using the hardware video
acceleration gets in a twist and changing resolution could well do that.

Two users logged in. Plugged in USB drive, had to switch to the other
user (it gets the 'mount' dialogue first for some unexplained reason),
cancelled mount there, switched back to mount in the right user..
.. display never appeared.
I was able to ssh in and save the end of syslog, attached.
Accidentally switched while a vlc video was paused, went '$%^&' and
switched back, stopped the video (i.e. the black screen).
On my system, syslog gets so many errors doing that, it grows by roughly
111,652 lines or 20,990,575 bytes per second!
