[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1347539] Re: Abnormally high battery discharge rate on Lenovo T420

2015-03-28 Thread Luís de Sousa
Presently I have kernel 3.13.0-48-generic installed (from the automatic
updates). With Bluetooth and WiFi off I am able to bring the discharge
rate down to 12 W/h. Although now I have battery lifetimes in line with
those I had with Ubuntu 12.04, there is still a long way to go to catch
Windows.

Title:
Abnormally high battery discharge rate on Lenovo T420

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  I have upgraded from12.04 to 14.04 on a Lenovo T420 laptop
  (Corei7-2620M CPU @ 2.70GHz × 4 + Sandybridge Mobile). Whereas with
12.04 the battery discharge rate would stay somewhere between 10 - 12
  W/h, with 14.04 it remains persistently over 30 W/h.

The discharge rate came closer to normal after an upgrade by late May.
But last week, apparently after an upgrade to linux-headers-generic,
the abnormally high discharge rate is back.

identify the cause of this problem:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1347539] Re: Abnormally high battery discharge rate on Lenovo T420

2015-01-19 Thread Luís de Sousa
A Windows user reports a discharge rate of 7-8 W/h running Word, with
WiFi and Bluetooth off:

http://forum.notebookreview.com/lenovo/574678-thinkpad-t420s-owners-
thread-10-print.html

With kernel 3.17 and no programmes running the discharge rate is about
the double of that.

Reagrds.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1350513] Re: Ctrl+Alt+F1 shuts down laptop

2014-10-17 Thread Luís de Sousa
Hello again,

I just witnessed a Lenovo ThinkPad T420 with Ubuntu 14.04 installed
entering Suspended mode by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1. I am now certain this
issue is not related to the BIOS; it is probably affecting a
considerable range of hardware and in different ways.

Regards,

Luís

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1350513] Re: Ctrl+Alt+F1 shuts down laptop

2014-10-11 Thread Luís de Sousa
Hello again,

I have tried to update the BIOS using two different methods:

. Using a virtual floppy: the update executable is over 3 Mb, and thus
the creation of the floppy fails.

. Using FreeDOS: it fails to mount any drives and thus access the
executable. Beyond this, FreeDOS is reportedly unable to update the
BIOS on Sony computers.

Thus the only option left seems to be a Windows re-install, which in my
case would force me to remove Ubuntu for reasons of space. I find this
too much of a burden to get a VT option in the BIOS (which seems
unrelated to issue reported).

Meanwhile, I found out that if I switch to a TTY with the lid open the
laptop does not shut down. While this is far easier than updating the
BIOS, I believe this bug still deserves a closer look.

Thank you for the support and regards,

Luís

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1347539] Re: Abnormally high battery discharge rate on Lenovo T420

2014-08-21 Thread Luís de Sousa
I managed to install and run the mainline kernel (3.17). With it the
battery discharge rate is dramatically down, about half of what it is
with kernel 3.13 (~ 15W), but still above what it was with Ubuntu 12.04.
Also, with kernel 3.17 it seems the automatic screen dimming is not
working.

Cheers.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1350513] Re: Ctrl+Alt+F1 shuts down laptop

2014-07-31 Thread Luís de Sousa
Dear Christopher,

Here's the description at the Sony page for the BIOS R2060Y0 update:

If your VAIO hardware supports Intel Virtualization Technology, this
setting will be added to the BIOS. The VT setting is disabled by
default.

Are you sure this is related to the issue reported? Updating the BIOS -
especially in a computer that has os Microsoft software at all - is not
a step to be taken lightly.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1350513] [NEW] Ctrl+Alt+F1 shuts down laptop

2014-07-30 Thread Luís de Sousa
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 14.04 on Sony Vaio VGN-FW31ZJ. Whenever I try to switch to a TTY,
say by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1, the system shuts down. The text user name
prompt appears for a split second but quickly everything goes black. I
then have to press and hold the On/Off chassis button (as in a regular
switch on) and wait for the whole start up process to go through: BIOS,
Grub and so on.

I have used Ubuntu on this laptop since 8.10 and never had such odd
behaviour.
