Title:
AMDGPU lockup on every computer sleep if monitor is already asleep

Status in linux-signed-oem-5.10 package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
The system always locks up, requiring a reboot.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Configure power saving to turn off the monitor after a period of
inactivity.
  2. Configure power saving to suspend the PC automatically after a certain
delay which is longer than the above one.
  3. Wait.
  4. The system will lock up with no way of returning to an operational state.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1755378] Re: Plymouth, Wayland not working under 4.15

2018-03-28 Thread Michael Gratton
Is that kernel in main now? After adding proposed just now it doesn't
seem to have any kernel packages.

I just installed linux-image-4.15.0-13-generic from main (4.15.0-13.14)
however and rebooted with that and it seems to be working fine now.
Cheers!

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1640000] Re: kidle_inject overly onerous, fans never used on MacBookPro12, 1

2016-11-07 Thread Michael Gratton
Similarly to Bug #1389077, I can disable Intel Powerclamp by `rmmod
intel_powerclamp` to prevent kidle_inject from being used, and in this
case applesmc (presumably) will start the fan kicking in as the system
gets hotter.

However unlike Bug #1389077, when intel_powerclamp is loaded here the
fan never seems to get used.

Title:
kidle_inject overly onerous, fans never used on MacBookPro12,1

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
At least since upgrading to Yakkey, my MacBookPro12,1 (13", 2015)
seems to respond to increased system heat using only kidle_inject, and
not the built-in fan. kidle_inject with kick in rather quickly,
especially with the Australian summer starting to be felt, and will
  render the system near useless.

Doing some investigation, it appears that no fan is registered as a
  cooling device:

  > mjg@payens:~$ grep . /sys/class/thermal/cooling_device*/type
  > /sys/class/thermal/cooling_device0/type:Processor
  > /sys/class/thermal/cooling_device1/type:Processor
  > /sys/class/thermal/cooling_device2/type:Processor
  > /sys/class/thermal/cooling_device3/type:Processor
  > /sys/class/thermal/cooling_device4/type:intel_powerclamp

Even though one is picked up by applesmc:

  > Nov 08 10:08:56 payens kernel: applesmc: key=670 fan=1 temp=35
  index=34 acc=0 lux=2 kbd=1

The fan seems to be physically in good condition, I tested it out
  using the following:

  > root@payens:~# echo 6000 >
  /sys/devices/platform/applesmc.768/fan1_min

Which started it blowing a lot of warm air out.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1640000] [NEW] kidle_inject overly onerous, fans never used on MacBookPro12, 1

2016-11-07 Thread Michael Gratton
Public bug reported:

At least since upgrading to Yakkey, my MacBookPro12,1 (13", 2015) seems
to respond to increased system heat using only kidle_inject, and not the
built-in fan. kidle_inject with kick in rather quickly, especially with
the Australian summer starting to be felt, and will render the system
near useless.

Doing some investigation, it appears that no fan is registered as a
cooling device:

> mjg@payens:~$ grep . /sys/class/thermal/cooling_device*/type
> /sys/class/thermal/cooling_device0/type:Processor
> /sys/class/thermal/cooling_device1/type:Processor
> /sys/class/thermal/cooling_device2/type:Processor
> /sys/class/thermal/cooling_device3/type:Processor
> /sys/class/thermal/cooling_device4/type:intel_powerclamp

Even though one is picked up by applesmc:

> Nov 08 10:08:56 payens kernel: applesmc: key=670 fan=1 temp=35
index=34 acc=0 lux=2 kbd=1

The fan seems to be physically in good condition, I tested it out using
the following:

> root@payens:~# echo 6000 > /sys/devices/platform/applesmc.768/fan1_min

Which started it blowing a lot of warm air out.

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
On my MacbookPro12,1 with Wily and Linux 4.2, by default the kernel

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1507472] Re: XHCI controller causing MacbookPro12, 1 to resume immediately after suspend

2016-01-20 Thread Michael Gratton
Still happens with: 4.4.0-040400rc8-generic from the mainline PPA (there
is a non RC 4.4 there, but it's older than RC8 so I used that instead).

These errors are reported now:

> [ 11.924171] usb 2-3: device not accepting address 2, error -62
> [ 16.832609] usb 1-3: device descriptor read/64, error -110

Also, I worked out how to reliably reproduce the related issues - the
long pause at boot, the errors above, and suspend immediately resuming
if wakeups from XHCI are not disabled: Just do a cold boot, i.e. from
power on. Warm boot show none of these symptoms.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1520069] Re: MacbookPro 12, 1 Apple external VGA thunderbolt/displayport display non-functional

2015-11-30 Thread Michael Gratton
It hasn't worked on the MBP 12,1 on any of the 4.x kernels, and I'm
pretty sure it didn't work on 3.x either.

The same adaptor was working with an older (pre-Thunderbolt) MBP, but
not this model.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1520069] [NEW] MacbookPro 12, 1 Apple external VGA thunderbolt/displayport display non-functional

2015-11-25 Thread Michael Gratton
Public bug reported:

The Apple VGA thunderbolt/displayport adaptor seems to be non-functional
on my MacbookPro 12,1. After plugging it in with a projector attached,
the projector does not show up in the display control panel and xrandr
reports DP1, DP2, HDMI1, HDMI2 and VIRTUAL1 displays all disconnected.
When inserting the adaptor, the following is printed in kern.log:

> Nov 26 16:13:26 payens kernel: [ 498.959901] thunderbolt :07:00.0:
> resetting error on 0:c.
> Nov 26 16:13:26 payens kernel: [ 498.959926] thunderbolt :07:00.0: 0:c:
> got unplug event for disconnected port, ignoring
> Nov 26 16:13:27 payens kernel: [ 499.161674] [drm:gen8_irq_handler [i915]]
> *ERROR* The master control interrupt lied (SDE)!

The last line repeats ~20 times.

I tried tried 4.4-rc2 from the mainline kernel PPA, and the same thing
occurs.

Also, the adaptor remains non-functional if booted with it plugged in,
in addition to attempting to hot-plug it.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1507472] Re: XHCI controller causing MacbookPro12, 1 to resume immediately after suspend

2015-11-25 Thread Michael Gratton
Hmm, no it hasn't. I think there is either a controller or device
initialisation problem, and it might be a race. On power-on, one of two
different things will happen after the Mac startup chime:

1. Usually, there will be along pause (30sec? 1min?), some random display
corruption, then boot proceeds normally.
2. Boot proceeds immediately.

In the case of #1, the following is printed to kern.log:

> xhci_hcd :00:14.0: Timeout while waiting for setup device command
> usb 2-3: device not accepting address 14, error -62

Also, when case #1 occurs, then this suspend/resume issue manifests
itself.

When case #2 occurs, those messages are not printed in kern.log, and
this suspend/resume issue does not occur. I have just had both occur in
quick succession with both the current 4.2 kernel in wily, and 4.4-rc2
from the mainline kernel PPA.

Quick update, after installing 4.4-rc2 from the mainline kernel PPA, the
problem has gone away again. Will report back after some use if that
seems to be persisting.

I'm not sure what you mean - it's the firmware hasn't changed, it's the
same version that appeared to have fixed the problem in the first place.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1507472] Re: XHCI controller causing MacbookPro12, 1 to resume immediately after suspend

2015-11-04 Thread Michael Gratton
I'm re-opening this because I am intermittently seeing the same
behaviour per the description again. Likewise, disabling the XHCI in
/proc/acpi/wakeup remains a usable workaround.

This is using linux-generic 4.2.0.16.18 and linux-firmware 1.149.

** Also affects: linux (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Changed in: linux-firmware (Ubuntu)
   Status: Invalid => New

Title:
XHCI controller causing MacbookPro12,1 to resume immediately after
  suspend

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in linux-firmware package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
On my MacbookPro12,1 with Wily and Linux 4.2, by default the kernel
successfully suspends but then immediately resumes again. The problem
seems to be the XHCI controller causing spurious ACPI wakeups.

Also, the Broadcom wifi module seems to have problems with
suspend/resume, so I am also unloading the `brcmfmac` module prior to
suspend and loading it again after resume.

WORKAROUND: Disable XHC1 prior to sleeping:
  > # echo XHC1 > /proc/acpi/wakeup

2015-10-19 Thread Michael Gratton
Public bug reported:

On my MacbookPro12,1 with Wily and Linux 4.2, by default the kernel
successfully suspends but then immediately resumes again. The problem
seems to be the XHCI controller causing spurious ACPI wakeups. After
disabling it using the following command:

> # echo XHC1 > /proc/acpi/wakeup

The kernel remains suspended after entering sleep. (Via
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/MacBook#Suspend_and_Hibernate)

Also, the Broadcom wifi module seems to have problems with
suspend/resume, so I am also unloading the `brcmfmac` module prior to
suspend and loading it again after resume.

Bug reported per per request by @penalvch in bug #1487919.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1507472] Re: XHCI controller causing MacbookPro12, 1 to resume immediately after suspend

2015-10-19 Thread Michael Gratton
I just tried reproducing this with the most recent from the link above
(v4.3-rc6-unstable) and couldn't, then went back to the current wily
kernel (4.2.0-16-generic) and still can't reproduce it.

So now I am wondering if the updated firmware for the BCM43602 wifi card
in linux-firmware 1.149 fixed the underlying cause?

I'll see if the problem reappears over the next few days and if not,
will try reverting linux-firmware to 1.148 to see if the problem comes
back.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1507472] Re: XHCI controller causing MacbookPro12, 1 to resume immediately after suspend

2015-10-19 Thread Michael Gratton
Just to confirm, using kernel 4.2.0-16-generic, downgrading linux-
firmware to 1.148 caused the problem to reappear then upgrading it back
to 1.149 caused the problem to go away again.

So it seems this issue was caused by the Broadcom's firmware, rather
than the kernel.

2015-10-09 Thread Michael Gratton
