Title:
[Asus 1005HA] Resuming from suspend mode : suspend loop

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Using 13.10 on my laptop (Asus EeePC 1005HA), the system goes into
suspend mode when I close the lid. When opening the lid and pressing a
key, the system wakes up and asks me for my password. This is the
  expected behavior.

However, if the laptop is running on battery, the system will go back
into suspend mode, within a few seconds ; it will do so each and every
time I wake it up subsequently.

If I connect the laptop to its PSU, it is acting as expected when
  resuming from suspend mode.

I did not experience any such problem with 13.04.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1243647] Re: [Asus 1005HA] Resuming from suspend mode : suspend loop

2013-12-16 Thread Owen Williams
This is not fix with kernel linux-
image-3.13.0-999-generic_3.13.0-999.201312110530_amd64.deb on my system.
I still get a double suspend:

Lid closed.
Suspending...
Failed to execute operation: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include:
the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy
blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was
broken.
Suspending...
Operation finished.
Lid opened.

2013-12-17 Thread Owen Williams
Thanks for the information, I'll file a new bug. From your instructions
I couldn't figure out which folder to get a kernel from. I don't
understand the one all the way on the bottom, since the daily folder
appears on the bottom for me.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1261753] [NEW] Laptop often suspends once immediately after resume

2013-12-17 Thread Owen Williams
Public bug reported:

I am seeing this behavior:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1243647 and was
told to file a separate bug. It takes 10-15 seconds for the second
suspend to trigger. I can tell I'm going to get a double-suspend when
the network doesn't come up after resume. I have tried the nmcli nm
sleep false trick.

I still get the same behavior -- after a long pause, I get the Failed

the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy
blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was
broken.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1261753] Re: [Dell XPS 13 (L322X)] Laptop often suspends once immediately after resume

2014-04-21 Thread Owen Williams
Still happens. The most consistent way to reproduce is:

* Have laptop plugged in by AC
* Close lid
* Remove AC
* Wait for suspend.
* Open lid, leave AC unplugged.
* Wait several seconds, laptop resuspends

The best workaround is disabling suspend-on-lid-close.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1261753] Re: [Dell XPS 13 (L322X)] Laptop often suspends once immediately after resume

2014-04-22 Thread Owen Williams
I tried testing again with the newest Ubuntu liveCD, and at least in
that environment it works correctly. And the wifi reconnects much more
quickly too. It's looking more likely that this is some strange quirk
of my system which has been upgraded a few times and may have some bad
config hiding somewhere.

Is there an accepted way to reinstall Ubuntu on top of an existing
installation, preserving at least the home directory? Otherwise I'll
just flatten and reinstall and see if that fixes it.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1261753] Re: [Dell XPS 13 (L322X)] Laptop often suspends once immediately after resume

2014-01-07 Thread Owen Williams
Another thing that seems related: it used to be that I could close the
lid with AC plugged in, and the laptop wouldn't suspend (that's how I
have it set). Then, if I removed the AC power, it still wouldn't
suspend. Now, if I remove power it does seem to check that the lid is
closed and it suspends.

I think this is related because I can prevent the double-suspend by
either plugging or unplugging the AC adapter before resuming. As long
as I reverse the state versus the power source at the time of suspend,
the laptop stays on.

2014-01-27 Thread Owen Williams
This thread is on point -- there is something wrong with the lid
detection: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2184892

In my case I'm not running xfce power manager, but the symptoms are the
same. (I have upowerd and indicator-power-service running)

2015-01-05 Thread Owen Williams
Also seeing this problem on a Dell XPS 13. Newest mainline kernel
(3.19-rc2) also fixes the issue. I'll test the 3.13 kernel next

On the Dell XPS 13, kernel linux-image-3.16.7-031607 still has the bug.
(To reproduce, I just close the lid and open it again. If the bug hits,
the image never comes back and I have to kill X)

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1808957] Re: Dell XPS 13 (9370) defaults to s2idle sleep/suspend instead of deep

2019-02-17 Thread Owen Williams
I'd like the second the suggestion that s2idle sleep not be used at
least on this model until the power usage issues have been worked out.
It wasn't easy to figure out what the problem was and the battery drain
will significantly reduce the lifespan of the laptop for users that
don't know to change the setting.

Title:
Dell XPS 13 (9370) defaults to s2idle sleep/suspend instead of deep

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
It seems that the Dell 9370 is set to go into s2idle mode rather than
deep sleep, forgoing significant power savings.

I have confirmed this by suspending and then checking:
sudo journalctl | grep "PM: suspend" | tail -2. If the output is

  PM: suspend entry (s2idle)
  PM: suspend exit

  cat /sys/power/mem_sleep showed

  [s2idle] deep

As a temporary fix, I typed
  echo deep > /sys/power/mem_sleep
as a root user (sudo -i).

Then the output of cat /sys/power/mem_sleep was
  s2idle [deep]

  After suspending now,
sudo journalctl | grep "PM: suspend" | tail -2 returns

  PM: suspend entry (deep)
  PM: suspend exit

I have made this permanent by editing
  /etc/default/grub

  and replacing
  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
  with
  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash mem_sleep_default=deep"

then regenerating my grub configuration (sudo grub-mkconfig -o
  /boot/grub/grub.cfg).

This appears to be working with no ill effects.
