[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1814604] Re: Alt-F1 aborts program when moving away from screen

2019-02-04 Thread Rodney
I tried to do the "apport-collect 1814604" above, but I never got an
indication the browser was trying to connect to the https server. So, I
am changing status to confirmed, as shown above.

Title:
Alt-F1 aborts program when moving away from screen

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
This problem was introduced in the "4.15.0-44" or "4.15.0-45" kernel
in late January 2019. The same problem happens in 32 bit and 64 bit
systems -- both installed before January 2019 and AFTER the problem
was introduced (that is, complete new installations AFTER). I have an
  Acer Aspire R15 laptop.

To reproduce the problem -- after the system boots:

Ctrl-Alt-F1 (unity) or Ctrl-Alt-F3 (gdm3). For arguments sake, I'll only
show unity.
  type in:
  cd /tmp
  ed
  a

And that puts you into the "ed" editor in "append" (add) mode.

Ctrl-Alt-F2 (or Alt-F2) and duplicate the typing in of F1 above
Ctrl-Alt-F3 (or Alt-F3) and duplicate the typing in of F1 above

Now, Ctrl-Alt-F1 (or Alt-F1) back to screen #1. It is at the system
prompt rather than and "ed" prompt, and the error "stdin: Resource
temporarily unavailable" is displayed. If you move to "Alt-F2" or
"Alt-F3", you don't see the error message there, and those screens
seem unaffected -- that is, it seems to affect only "Alt-F1". For
some reason screen #1 aborts the program that is running when you move
away from "Alt-F1". You can confirm that the program aborts when
moving away from "Alt-F1" rather than moving back to "Alt-F1" by doing
an "ssh" to that computer from another computer and doing a "ps -e |
egrep tty1" before and after moving away from "Alt-F1".

You can exit those "ed" sessions back to the system prompt by typing in:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1813745] Re: ubuntu 18-04 hangs on graphical start with kernel 4-15-0-44

2019-02-04 Thread Rodney
Stephane Guilard:

I think that comment was for me -- if so, thanks:

I was able to get 4.15.0-43 installed (another way). That didn't help.
It seems something else has happened that they haven't found. I have
another computer "Samsung NP300E5C Notebook" that has the "43" and "45"
kernels installed on it, on Jan 16 and Feb 2. No "44" on it, and it
probably never did. It works fine.

ubuntu 18-04 hangs on graphical start with kernel 4-15-0-44

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I updated my machine's kernel to 4.15.0-44. After a restart the whole
  machine was messed up.

The machine starts regularly up to the point, where the graphical

to change the screen resolution. Unfortunately, the monitor never
comes back to life. Nothing useful is displayed anymore and my input
devices are non-functional. I cannot change to any tty not change the
state of the Num-Lock-LED on the keyboard.

4.15.0-43 kernel boots fine from grub-menu. From there, demsg shows a
  crash in Intel video driver:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1813745] Re: ubuntu 18-04 hangs on graphical start with kernel 4-15-0-44

2019-02-03 Thread Rodney
4.15.0-45 does not fix my problem. The boot continues to hang when
gnome tries to start. I cannot "Ctrl-Alt-F1 (or any F?)", but I can ssh
from another computer to this affected computer. Log files don't show
anything remarkable to me, but I wouldn't know what was remarkable in
all of the verbiage. The boot process was working fine in the week of
Jan 28 2019 through, oh say Jan 31.

The only way I can boot is tell grub to boot to 4.15.0-45-generic
(recovery mode). The system comes up, but my display is affected. I
have:

Acer Aspire R15
Processor: Intel Core I5-7200 CPU @ 2.50Gz x 4
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics (620 (KabyLake GT2) x86/MMX/SSE2
OS type: 32-bit

but when booted in recovery mode, it shows:
Graphics: llvmpipe (llvm 6.0, 256 bits)

uname -a shows:

Linux AcerAspireR15 4.15.0-45-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jan 29 16:27:25
UTC 2019 i686 i686 i686 GNU/Linux

This is a newly installed system so I cannot revert back to a 4.15.0-43
monitor (I reinstalled when I encountered this problem).

Wanted to let yall know that the 4.15.0-45 update did not fix the
problem for every computer. And, I don't know how to install one of the
kernels at "https://people.canonical.com/~khfeng/lp1813663/";, and
wouldn't know which one to install anyway.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1471794] Re: Wifi slow on Intel Corporation Centrino Ultimate-N 6300

2017-03-21 Thread Rodney Beede
Firmware changes did not help, but the following doubled my speed from
20mbps to 40mbps (still 50% lower than what I got in Windows 7):

vi /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf
Change line to

wifi.powersave = 2

echo "options iwlwifi 11n_disable=8" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi11n.conf

Currently I use Ubuntu 14.04 LTS with Linux 3.18.1 (Vivid package) but the
speed is already slow.
The range of the card is reduced, and I take sometimes 2 - 5min to discover a
network.

Connection/disconnection to an other network can make a bug were the

  works), or reboot the computer.

It make this card absolutely not reliable because of the driver on

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1471794] Re: Wifi slow on Intel Corporation Centrino Ultimate-N 6300

2017-03-21 Thread Rodney Beede
Went to

http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/network-and-i-o/wireless-
networking/05511.html

and tried version 9.176 with no luck, same slow speeds.

loaded firmware version 9.176.4.1 build 15835 op_mode iwldvm

sudo mv -i ~rbeede/Downloads/iwlwifi-6000-4.ucode /lib/firmware
sudo modprobe -r iwlwifi; sudo modprobe iwlwifi; dmesg | grep firmware
sudo service network-manager restart

Will try the git repo latest build next. By chance is there a way to load the
Windows firmware/drivers instead?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1471794] Re: Wifi slow on Intel Corporation Centrino Ultimate-N 6300

2017-03-21 Thread Rodney Beede
I just tested and have the same issue. I tried the modprobe options
idea with no change.

Ubuntu 16.10 64-bit.

4.8.0-41-generic #44-Ubuntu SMP

My next approach will be to try the firmware blob from Intel's website
to see if pushing a newer one in helps.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1021924]

2014-10-17 Thread Rodney Dawes
(In reply to Rodrigo Vivi from comment #34)
> Since the error reported cannot be reproduced anymore by reporter of reopen
> let's close this as invalid.
> Anyone able to reproduce again it feel free to re-reopen. But remind to test
> on latest drm-intel-nightly.

Well, it's still an issue. I just no longer am using the motherboard/cpu
where I was having the problem, and no longer am using multiple displays
(I have a single 4K display now, which has a different set of problems
on Linux).

Closing it as Invalid seems like an inappropriate resolution to the
problem. As the motheboard and CPU are both from Intel, I would think it
should have been fairly easy for Intel employees working on drivers to
get access to them for testing.

If the end result is that this isn't going to be fixed at all, then at
least have the guts to resolve it WONTFIX rather than insulting me by
claiming it is somehow INVALID.

Status in “linux” source package in Precise:

Bug description:
I have an Intel DQ77MK motherboard, which has 2 DVI connectors, and a
Core i7 3770S IvyBridge CPU. Under Ubuntu 12.04, the multiple display
support does not work, and I am stuck with a single display. The
second screen only shows all pixels as 100% red. Enabling the second
screen in Displays in System Settings does allow me to move windows
and the mouse cursor to that screen, though I cannot actually see
anything on it, as everything is red. For now I have had to force it
to mirror displays, to avoid moving things to the second screen.

Also, on the daily live image for Quantal, the system appears to
freeze when X starts, and I am left with the primary screen being
black, and the secondary screen being full red. The plymouth
framebuffer is a fuzzy green image, and everything turns black when X
  comes up.

Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1354270] Re: [ASRock G31M-S] hibernate/resume failure [non-free: fglrx]

2014-08-08 Thread Rodney Navratil
I have been using Ubuntu since the first edition. I used Debian for 5
years before switching it Ubuntu. The Gallium driver was already
installed on the system. I decided the fglrx driver was not refined for
14.10. I thought the Gallium driver is Ubuntu default?

  Hello,

when I want to connect my SE W800i mobile phone to my Asus Eee PC 1005
HA netbook i go to the bluetooth-manager gui and add it. Selecting a
different than "Automatic PIN" (e.g. ) has no effect however.
There is always a random PIN generated.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1021924]

2014-06-26 Thread Rodney Dawes
This is still an issue as of 2014-06-20 on 3.13.0-29-generic in Ubuntu
14.04, however I have now upgraded to a single 4K monitor and a Haswell
CPU, so I won't be able to test any further possible fixes for this
issue.

One thing of note though, is that when X came up on 3.13.0-29, the
second monitor did display the correct content for a few hundred
milliseconds. The image would flash in and then away very quickly, as
the screen turned to a giant solid colored area.

Running "xrandr --output HDMI1 --crtc 0 --output HDMI3 --crtc 2 --right-
of HDMI1" on log-in did make the second screen usable again.

The plymouth
framebuffer is a fuzzy green image, and everything turns black when X
  comes up.

dmesg|grep drm output for drm.debug=0xe on 2014-02-04

Here is a drm.debug log with the 3.13.0-6-generic kernel in Ubuntu
Trusty. It includes all the drm output from the boot command up to the
second display failure when lightdm comes up, another failure for the
display to come up after logging in, and it being fixed with the xrandr
command (which I've set up to be run automatically 10 seconds after log
in).

8086:0162 [Intel DQ77MK] Multiple Displays not working

The plymouth
framebuffer is a fuzzy green image, and everything turns black when X
  comes up.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1021924]

2014-01-08 Thread Rodney Dawes
After getting the second monitor working properly with xrandr faffing,
the settings do not stick after a reboot, unfortunately.

How can I get it to work correctly by default, every time?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1021924]

2014-01-08 Thread Rodney Dawes
Playing with xrandr some more, I have gotten "xrandr --output HDMI1
--crtc 0 --output HDMI3 --crtc 2 --right-of HDMI1" to work. I can use
both screens at full resolution, with this command. I don't know if it
will stick after a reboot, but I will comment here as soon as I do
reboot.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1021924]

2014-01-08 Thread Rodney Dawes
Now running 3.13.0-1 on Ubuntu, and second display still not working,
and no link train errors in dmesg.

Second screen remains black. I can use both screens only when I set them
to an extremely low resolution of 1280x800 each. Any higher resolution,
and the second screen remains black.

If I run "xrandr --output HDMI3 --crtc 2" the second screen displays the
mirrored copy of the first screen, but I don't seem to be able to
disable mirroring with that. Disabling mirroring results in the second
screen returning to black.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1021924]

2013-12-23 Thread Rodney Dawes
(In reply to comment #26)
> Rodney, please post the full dmesg from the failure case. Since plenty of

I've just upgraded the machine to Ubuntu Trusty development series,
which has kernel 3.12.0-7.15. The second display is still blank, but
there are no link train errors showing up in the dmesg output.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1021924] Re: 8086:0162 [Intel DQ77MK] Multiple Displays not working

2013-10-27 Thread Rodney Dawes
Christopher, no, making the assumption that something may be "fixed" by
a BIOS update, which contains no documentation relevant to the issue, is
exactly that; an assumption. There is no evidence that suggests a BIOS
update would fix something that is not documented in the release notes
for the update.

This is a bug report against the Linux kernel, not against the Intel
MQ77 BIOS. There is no reason to assume it is a problem with the BIOS.
The bug has existed for well over a year now, and assuming that it is
going to be magically fixed with a BIOS update is nonsense. The history
of the report clearly shows it has been accepted as a valid bug report
by upstream (whom as I already stated, is an Intel device driver
developer, working for Intel), against the kernel.

I am not going to waste time trying to update to a new BIOS and
performing the tedious procedure of testing the issue, when there is
absolutely zero evidence that it could have any impact on the issue at
all.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1021924] Re: 8086:0162 [Intel DQ77MK] Multiple Displays not working

2013-10-25 Thread Rodney Dawes
Christopher, while I appreciate your passion for triaging bugs, and
wishing to strictly adhere to process or protocol, a BIOS update that
will not fix anything is unnecessary, and a waste of time. One can
easily see by looking at the release notes of the BIOS update that it
will not affect this issue, and one can also see by looking at the
history of this report (including of the upstream report which is linked
from this bug), that it has been accepted by upstream as a bug in the
kernel, by a developer who works directly on the Intel drivers, for
Intel.

Unless the Graphics Option ROM version in the BIOS update has changed,
it is going to be an irrelevant update, in relation to this bug. So
please don't waste my time (and anyone else who may be watching this
bug), by insisting that a BIOS update be applied, where the Graphics
Option ROM version has not changed.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1021924] Re: 8086:0162 [Intel DQ77MK] Multiple Displays not working

2013-10-24 Thread Rodney Dawes
Christopher, must I really waste our time by updating the BIOS every
time a fix for the Q77 chip set comes out? It's a pain to do the BIOS
update, and it's a pain to test this bug specifically, because it
requires several reboots and shifting cables behind a rack.

If you read the Release Notes for the BIOS update, which are at
http://downloadmirror.intel.com/23256/eng/MK_0064_ReleaseNotes.pdf , you
can see that none of the fixes are directly related to the integrated
graphics support, and that the integrated graphics option ROM version
has not changed in quite some time.

I understand if the option ROM was updated as well, or there was a fix
mentioned that was specifically related to the graphics support, but
updating every time there's an update available, is a waste of time.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1021924] Re: 8086:0162 [Intel DQ77MK] Multiple Displays not working

2013-10-16 Thread Rodney Dawes
I've removed the i386 tag as well as the tag for requesting test on an
older kernel than is currently available. I was running 12.04 32-bit
when originally filing this bug, but have long since upgraded to a
64-bit only system, after installing a new hard drive.

The plymouth
framebuffer is a fuzzy green image, and everything turns black when X
  comes up.

The BIOS update rev 0061 lists no changes in its release notes file,
that would be potentially related to this issue.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1021924]

2013-08-15 Thread Rodney Dawes
I have upgraded to a new version of Ubuntu now, which is using 3.10.0-6,
as well as the latest version of the BIOS for this board, from Intel.
The second screen is completely red, and link train errors are
occurring:

: dmesg|grep drm

[ 58.210144] [drm:ivb_manual_fdi_link_train] *ERROR* FDI train 2 fail!

The bug is certainly not fixed. There is no new information, because no
further information has been asked for until now, and I've purchased a
cheap PCIe NVidia card, so that I could get both monitors working in the
meantime, as being able to use both of my monitors is necessary. I
didn't buy a second one to never use it.

I've also removed the Quantal and Raring tasks, as they are non-LTS
releases, and I don't see the chance of this being fixed in them because
of that.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1021924] Re: 8086:0162 [Intel DQ77MK] Multiple Displays not working

2013-08-13 Thread Rodney Dawes
Is there a specific version I should test? I see 3.11-rc5 mentioned, but
3.11.0-1-generic was installed as an update when I did a dist-upgrade
earlier today, and the bug is still present there. Given that, I would
also expect the bug to be present in upstream 3.11-rc5.

Also, this is not trivial to test. The machine is mounted in a rack,
with little space to access the DVI ports, and it's a production use
workstation PC. Every time I test this, I have to stop any work I may be
doing, power off the machine, wedge myself in to be able to adjust the
cables, and on occasion have to muck about in BIOS so that the right
driver is used (internal vs. nvidia pcie), reboot with whatever kernel,
and then muck about in settings to see if it triggers everything. It's
not a test system I can just upgrade, reboot, and check new kernels at
will. So unless there is some specific set of changes in a new kernel
which points to the possibility of the issue being fixed, I'd prefer not
to waste my time, or the kernel developers', trying to test things that
won't work.

The plymouth
framebuffer is a fuzzy green image, and everything turns black when X
  comes up.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1021924] Re: Multiple Displays not working on Core i7 3770S + Intel DQ77MK motherboard

2013-08-12 Thread Rodney Dawes
The BIOS update did not help. Here is the new information:

MKQ7710H.86A.0060.2013.0618.1012
06/18/2013

I am now also running on Ubuntu Saucy 13.10, with kernel
3.10.0-6-generic.

The second display is entirely red, and the fdi link train failures are
still occurring:

[ 57.936050] [drm:ivb_manual_fdi_link_train] *ERROR* FDI train 1 fail!
[ 57.938196] [drm:ivb_manual_fdi_link_train] *ERROR* FDI train 2 fail!

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1203933] Re: Kernel panic in kernel version 3.8.0-26.38-generic 3.8.13.2

2013-07-30 Thread Rodney Beede
I am encountering this issue as well. Attached is a screenshot.

My setup:

Ubuntu 13.04 LTS 64-bit Server Edition
VMWare Workstation 9 on a Windows 7 64-bit Enterprise Edition host
No floppy drive in the VM settings, but I didn't modify the default BIOS either.

One good tool to quickly reproduce the issue:
sudo apt-get install md5deep

sudo md5deep -c -r -z /

You get a kernel panic when it starts to hit items in /dev and
/vmlinuz.old

I have also attached the output of "sudo lspci -vnvn > ~/lspci-
  vnvn.log".

  I really hope this helps..
