By previous experience, BIOS vendor may implement some WMI interface
that can be used to control anything they want. Somehow such interfaces
could be misused on Linux as they're mostly designed for Windows. For

status`? It works just fine on Focal with same v5.5.8 mainline kernel:

packages from https://people.canonical.com/~acelan/bugs/lp1865829/
directly and see if that also works for you.

20.04 is a LTS and will be maintained until 2030, so you really don't
have to worry about whether it will be shipped with 20.04 ultimately
once it makes its way into mainline kernel.

Hi, by "failed to boot", could you give some more details about what
happened? Could you try to edit kernel boot parameters at grub, remove
"quiet splash", and add:
ignore_loglevel debug initcall_debug log_buf_len=32M earlycon=efifb
And attach the screenshot and/or dmesg of that
