Yes, there is a USB-C "port extender" (dock) attached to this Lenovo
laptop. The model is the MUC-0501B. It is this exact device :

I have applied the workaround for mutter :

I am seeing no further logs at the moment. I will continue to monitor
for issues.
To address any low-level issues I also have applied the system firmware
update, available via ISO from the Lenovo support site

Should I open this as a different issue with the Core X Chroma
Thunderbolt 3 enclosure ? It's very similar.

I believe this problem is not related to 32GB of RAM, but instead
related to Lenovo laptops.
The one Dell user in here seems to have a different issue. I am going
to see if I can get the attention of someone over at Lenovo to take a
look into this one.

Checking into the software for the laptop, Gen 6 X1 Yoga, I see there
was a firmware update specifically dealing with Thunderbolt, and other
USB-C peripherals.
Have just applied this with the "fwupdmgr" tool. Will do further
testing.

This hits my system too, a Lenovo :
To reproduce, close the lid, attach the external thunderbolt "dock" ,
and open the laptop lid to wake the machine from sleep.
On doing so, the flapping happens. Listening to the fans it appears
like the enclosure is repeatedly "restarting", I can hear the
nvidia logfile added after a reboot -- forgot to add it at the time of
the problem. May not be as useful.

Public bug reported:
Using VirtualBox on the main host, with the "3d Acceleration" enabled
for the windows 10 guest, I somehow triggered a bug. I suspect this is
a bug in handling for the NVIDIA driver, it has an impact on the kernel
because of the loaded module.
Soft Lockups repeatedly occur,
in nvidia-graphics-drivers-535 package in Ubuntu:
New
Bug description:

At the moment, just a single display.
The NVIDIA GPU is available across a Thunderbolt 3 link.
