Today, Hogwarts Legacy, Star Citizen and few more games are crashing or just not starting because the vm_max_map_count is locked at 65530. If we change this value to a value > 20, all games are working well and there is no bug linked to maps. Some others distribution like Fedora or Pop OS, have already made the change few month before. It's time to Ubuntu to makes the change also. Thanks in advance for applying this request. Using Nvidia 4xx series driver. 48GB RAM, dual 1080ti gpu, i7 cpu. LibreOffice Writer constantly lags, losing function, freezes (does not crash) with any type of writer document (odt or xslx). New single page or existing multi-page documents, doesn't matter, same issue after a minute or two. Hates text selection, mouse-wheel scrolling is a tell- tale sign. New Writer windows opened during lag are black. CPU usage in htop is very high for soffice.bin, ~60 - 80%. Must pkill the soffice.bin and use file recover but lag freeze up will occur again soon after opening. I experience the issue with all three installation methods: snap, distro command-line install, or using the LibreOffice ppa "fresh". I've tried changing OpenCL settings, disabling all extensions, disable smooth scrolling, disabling java, have purged install/reinstall and limiting to single window. I have the Marco ppa installed (ppa:ubuntu- mate-dev/marco). Doesn't seem to matter or what mate-tweak option is selected. LO using Yaru or other theme; doesn't matter same effect. Terminal does not show me any helpful errors when Writer is called directly from command line, at least I can easily identify. Guessing this is upstream of MATE and a libreoffice thing; a few similar issues around the web but no good workaround. I can update my exact specs and kernel later as required. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1838443] Re: No flicker free boot since Ignoring BGRT: invalid version 0 (expected 1)
** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Medium -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1838443 Title: No flicker free boot since Ignoring BGRT: invalid version 0 (expected 1) Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: On eoan dev here: Flicker free booting doesn't work since I get: Ignoring BGRT: invalid version 0 (expected 1) on dmesg on my Thinkpad x230t i7-3520M (Ivy Bridge). Second, if I add: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash i915.fastboot=1" to /etc/default/grub then it doesn't show plymouth but displays the text Ubuntu loading screen and I need to press ALT+F1 so GDM will show up (see video: [1]). If I press escape while it is displaying text Ubuntu loading, it loads plymouth (see video: [2]) and shows the spinner (no lenovo word) and I don't need to press ALT+F1 since GDM shows after plymouth. So I guess there's a bug there, since it should display plymouth and not the Ubuntu loading text and boot directly to GDM. Now if I patch the kernel: diff --git a/drivers/firmware/efi/efi-bgrt.c b/drivers/firmware/efi/efi-bgrt.c index b07c17643210..5754e530af9a 100644 --- a/drivers/firmware/efi/efi-bgrt.c +++ b/drivers/firmware/efi/efi-bgrt.c @@ -42,7 +42,7 @@ void __init efi_bgrt_init(struct acpi_table_header *table) return; } *bgrt = *(struct acpi_table_bgrt *)table; - if (bgrt->version != 1) { + if (bgrt->version != 1 && false) { /* don't check BGRT version */ pr_notice("Ignoring BGRT: invalid version %u (expected 1)\n", bgrt->version); goto out; And linux-modules and linux-modules-extra is not installed in that kernel, then I have somewhat flicker free boot. It shows the bgrt screen then goes black (probably grub loading), then shows the bgrt screen again with the spinner. Nice! (see video: [3]) So, I guess my Thinkpad is not setting bgrt version properly. So can we have a kernel parameter to disable checking of bgrt version? Then again, if I install linux-modules and linux-modules-extra then I get the Ubuntu loading text when booting, but if I press esc I get the bgrt screen with spinner. I think it's it's a bug somewhere in the linux-modules package. Using this kernel, the Oracle Java browser plugin always crashes during stack-related actions on initialization. This means, the plugin completely stopped working. It works perfectly fine in linux-image-4.4.0-79-generic (vurlerable to CVE-2017-1000364) as well as linux-image-4.11.6-041106-generic, which also contains a fix for CVE-2017-1000364. uname -a: > Linux Zweiblum 4.4.0-81-generic #104-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jun 14 08:17:06 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux I tested Oracle Java 1.8 u131 as well as 1.6 u64 in Firefox 51.0.1 as well as Iceweasel / Firefox/3.5.16 in a chroot. Using linux-image-4.4.0-81-generic it crashes in all combinations while with both other kernels it works. I was not able to obtain any detailed crash information from Firefox 51.0.1, but Iceweasel 3.5.16 crashed completely, allowing me to obtain a stack trace which shows the relation to stack operations performed by the plugin, even without proper debug symbols: > (gdb) bt full > #0 0x7fa06d805307 in _expand_stack_to(unsigned char*) () from /opt/java-8-oracle/jre/lib/amd64/server/libjvm.so > No symbol table info available. > #1 0x7fa06d8053ae in os::Linux::manually_expand_stack(JavaThread*, unsigned char*) () >from /opt/java-8-oracle/jre/lib/amd64/server/libjvm.so > No symbol table info available. > #2 0x7fa06d80cf0b in JVM_handle_linux_signal () from /opt/java-8-oracle/jre/lib/amd64/server/libjvm.so > No symbol table info available. > #3 0x7fa06d802e13 in signalHandler(int, siginfo*, void*) () from /opt/java-8-oracle/jre/lib/amd64/server/libjvm.so > No symbol table info available. > #4 I first assumed a bug in the Java plugin, but it works fine in Linux 4.11.6. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1596214] Re: Volume button no longer repeats
** Package changed: unity (Ubuntu) => linux (Ubuntu) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1596214 Title: Volume button no longer repeats Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: When volume buttons are held down, they do not repeat as expected. The buttons therefore need to be pressed multiple times for each increment of volume. This was broken by a 16.04 update; the buttons work just fine using a 16.10 live cd without any updates. Unfortunately I'm not sure what package broke this. I did test older kernels and that's not the issue. It's also not an indicator-sound package issue, since the Xenial package has not been upgraded. The xev command shows that the buttons are repeating properly, but that, for some reason, does not translate into the volume going up or down. There is one situation where they do work as expected: if they user has already clicked the sound indicator. As long as the sound indicator menu is open, the holding down the volume keys will cause the volume to go up and down repeatedly as normal. Others with the same issue, for reference: https://askubuntu.com/questions/781802/volume-key-repeat-stop-working I'm using a ThinkPad 420s. A few people on Ask Ubuntu also seem to have Thinkpads, so I'm not sure if it's a Lenovo-specific issue. Thanks. Kernel packages should set this key, but currently do not. Fixing this is a one-line change. Please enable it by default. See also: http://www.webupd8.org//2011/10/increased-performance-in-linux-with.html https://launchpad.net/~shnatsel/+archive/zram === Original description === Including compcache by default can have a number of benefits for the average, and not so average, Ubuntu user. For the average user, compcache will decrease disk swapping, which will increase perceived performance and decrease hits, which for laptop users will improve battery life. Since many users use laptops and netbooks these days, this is a big audience and would make many people happy. Desktop users will also benefit, as their disks will be less active and their electric bills may go down a tiny bit. For the not-so-average user, such as those that run virtualization, they can run more VMs. With Ubuntu striving to be bigger in the server space, this could be a big deal. For me, I (unfortunately) run Windows in KVM, and it appears that enabling compcache improves my VM's performance. Embedded devices and netbooks (such as those that run Ubuntu Netbook Remix) will benefit, as they have little RAM, and since compcache sort of increases RAM, it will make these devices more capable. Since compcache is already in the Ubuntu kernel (see bug 200765), the only thing left is to either add an initramfs script or a udev script (IMHO, the udev approach is cleaner) as described here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Compcache compcache: http://code.google.com/p/compcache/ Thanks! [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1035074] Re: Behavior of '~' in Spanish keyboard is wrong
** Also affects: xkeyboard-config (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1035074 Title: Behavior of '~' in Spanish keyboard is wrong Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in “xkeyboard-config” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: On Spanish keyboards, whey you hit AltGr+4, a ~ sign is immediately printed. Instead, nothing should be printed until you hit the next key; if the next key you hit is a vowel or any latter that can have a tilde over it, then that character should be produced. For example, if you hit AltGr+4 and then a, you should get an ã In order to type a plain ~ you should have to hit AltGr+4 followed by a space. In other words the character ~ should work the same way as `, ´ and ¨ and ^ do. I'm almost sure this was how it used to work until very recently, so I thing this is a regression introduced by some recent update. I guess the correct package is not linux but I have no idea which package it is and how to figure it out. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 750585] Re: [FFe] support for making linux-libc-dev coinstallable under multiarch

Although most of the remaining work on multiarch -dev can and will take place in ppa for natty given where we are in the release cycle, any -dev package tree has at its root linux-libc-dev which is built from the 'linux' source package - the package which is updated more frequently than any other by SRU. Rather than trying to keep up with SRUs, or artificially inflating the version of a linux-libc-dev-only package build in ppa, it would be welcome if a multiarch-ready linux-libc-dev could be included in the archive for natty. Risks: anything that looks directly in /usr/include/asm for headers will have problems with this change; anything that uses the system include path from the compiler will not. My best efforts at examining the archive for this issue (see below for details) have turned up only four packages in main and universe that are affected: three C library implementations, and bash-completion. Updating these packages in concert is manageable (patch for eglibc is ready, patches for the others are in preparation), but there's always some risk that the text search on package sources has missed something, and there wouldn't be room for another full archive rebuild before release to catch other breakage. Details: In order to have coinstallable multiarch -dev packages of any sort, linux-libc-dev first needs to be coinstallable since libc-dev depends on it. This seems to be straightforward to achieve; only the asm directory needs to be moved to the multiarch directory path, all the other header files appear to be (sensibly) architecture-neutral and can be shared between architectures. The compiler will find /usr/include/triplet/asm for the corresponding architecture with no problems; I've done a number of test builds that work just fine this way. The only trouble is with software that walks the filesystem looking for asm/foo.h includes instead of trusting the compiler to resolve them. It's unlikely that software should need to do this since the asm headers should as a rule not be directly included from userspace anyway, but the chances are not zero. I didn't expect nearly as many packages to break as did by the move to /usr/lib/triplet, either, so it seems my faith in the sanity of upstream build systems is generally misplaced. And I don't think we have time to discover any resulting issues with another archive test rebuild and fix the resulting packages before the natty release. It seems to want to force install grub-pc -- ignoring the fact that grub-efi is installed.
