[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1415880] Re: 14e4:4365 bcmwl-kernel source: fix for null pointer crash

2015-02-13 Thread Andre Bogus
On vivid, with the patch, I still get the warning, but the connection
doesn't drop (at least for now, fingers crossed).

Title:
14e4:4365 bcmwl-kernel source: fix for null pointer crash

Status in bcmwl package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
The bcmwl package as of now misses one patch for a bug that occurs
with BCM43142 and possibly other broadcom chipsets that will look like
random disconnects, poor wifi signal and kernel warnings, See also
  #1379524.

Adding the patch is a fairly simple process:

  * put the patch file in /usr/src/bcmwl-6.30.223.248+bdcom/patches
  * add the following line to /usr/src/bcmwl-6.30.223.248+bdcom/dkms.conf
  PATCH[7]=0014-null-pointer-crash.patch
  * run: /usr/lib/dkms/common.postinst bcmwl 6.30.223.248+bdcom
/usr/share/bcmwl x86_64 $(uname -r)

This has fixed the issue for me. Edit: I just wanted to add that I did
not write the patch; I merely downloaded it from a paste that was
linked from the respective AUR package.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1415880] Re: 14e4:4365 bcmwl-kernel source: fix for null pointer crash

2015-02-12 Thread Andre Bogus
That's too bad. I'm one step from updating to vivid. One interesting
tidbit I found in dmesg output:

[ 11.564768] wlan0: Broadcom BCM4365 802.11 Hybrid Wireless Controller
6.30.223.248 (r487574)

Is BCM4365 an alias? Or what could be the reason for this?

2015-02-12 Thread Andre Bogus
Sergey, that is very much possible.

I'm now on vivid (via do-release-upgrade -d), The problem reappears
without the patch. I am now reapplying the patch and see if it works
out.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1415880] Re: 14e4:4365 bcmwl-kernel source: fix for null pointer crash

2015-02-05 Thread Andre Bogus
Christopher M. Penalver, the output is:

8DCN40WW
10/24/2014

Interestingly, the version coincides with the version information on the
Lenovo site (where I downloaded the update), but the date is one day and
one month earlier than the date on the Lenovo site.

Upon further testing, the problem persists with or without the patch
applied. Please note that in the meantime, I did an apt-get upgrade,
which installed the new 3.16.0-30-generic kernel,.

I'm going to try updating to vivid during the next days.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1415880] Re: 14e4:4365 bcmwl-kernel source: fix for null pointer crash

2015-02-04 Thread Andre Bogus
Hi again,

this took some time. I had to dig up a Windows 7 Rescue CD from
somewhere, change my BIOS settings to activate legacy support (otherwise
it would not boot), then start the BIOS update utility. Those were some
tense 30 seconds. Afterwards, it rebooted into Windows, which I exited,
rebooting again only to find out that either the Windows or the BIOS
update had somehow mangled my grub partitions. With a vivid USB stick, I
was able to make it boot again.

Long story short, the error reappeared promptly. So, now I'm on 8DCN40WW
(and we can probably remove the BIOS-outdated tag).

I'm going to do some more testing, perhaps upgrading to vivid.

Title:
  14e4:4365 Weak wifi signal

Status in bcmwl package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
On a fresh install of Ubuntu 14.04 on my new HP Pavilion 15-020ng with
Broadcom BCM43142 hybrid wifi/bluetooth chipset the official driver
from Broadcom does not work correctly. On 2.4 GHz the wifi signal is
so low that the connection is interrupted on a regular basis (network
manager shows 26 Mb/s), other devices (notebook, tablet) do have a
normal signal at the same position and even this laptop has a good
  signal with Windows 7 (Dual-Boot).

  The exact device name:
  08:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM43142 802.11b/g/n
[14e4:4365] (rev 01)

I am using the official wl driver that was installed by default, also
tried reinstalling via sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source
--reinstall without improvement and sudo iwconfig wlan0 power off.
Also blacklisted b43, brcmsmac and bcma as suggested by Linux
  Wireless.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1415880] Re: bcmwl-kernel source: fix for null pointer crash

2015-01-29 Thread Andre Bogus
** Description changed:

The bcmwl package as of now misses one patch for a bug that occurs with
BCM43142 and possibly other broadcom chipsets that will look like random
disconnects, poor wifi signal and kernel warnings, See also #1379524.

Adding the patch is a fairly simple process:

  * put the patch file in /usr/src/bcmwl-6.30.223.248+bdcom/patches
  * add the following line to /usr/src/bcmwl-6.30.223.248+bdcom/dkms.conf
  PATCH[7]=0014-null-pointer-crash.patch
  * run: /usr/lib/dkms/common.postinst bcmwl 6.30.223.248+bdcom
/usr/share/bcmwl x86_64 $(uname -r)

- This has fixed the issue for me.

+ from the respective AUR package.

  4) What happened instead

I have just installed Ubuntu on my laptop with a BCM43142 card. I have
install the recommended driver for this card, the bcmwl-kernel-source,
however it is not working properly. It detects the different wifi
networks available but the signal is really low. With my other
devices, phone, tablet and in windows 8.1 I don't have this issue, and
I can easily connect to them.

Because signal is so low, it is constantly connecting and
  disconnecting.

I have added a bug with a description of a patch that fixes a possibly
related null pointer crash at:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bcmwl/+bug/1415880 – judging
from the comments on the AUR page, it could very well solve this
problem.

  3) What is expected to happen is when one uses the bcmwl-kernel-source
package in 14.10, it works on both 2.5Ghz and 5Ghz.

  4) What happens instead is after upgrading to saucy or any newer
  release and installing bcmwl-kernel-source =6.30.223.30+bdcom-
0ubuntu1 it fails to find any 5GHz networks and connections on 2.5GHz
  are unstable.

Unfortunately, while b43 does detect the chip, it only uses 2.4GHz and
it has very slow data rates and connection drops.

WORKAROUND: This chip is working perfectly fine on 2.5GHz and 5GHz
using version 6.20.155.1+bdcom-0ubuntu6 of the driver.

Downgrading the machine to kernel 3.8.x and bcmwl-kernel-source
6.20.155.1+bdcom-0ubuntu6 (both from raring) makes the chip work again.
UPDATE: Up to kernel 3.13.0-23 a patched working package of
bcmwl-kernel-source 6.20.155.1+bdcom-0ubuntu6 here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bcmwl/+bug/1387221/+attachment/4249077/+files/bcmwl-kernel-source_6.20.155.1%2Bbdcom-0ubuntu6_amd64.deb
Currently there is no way to have utopic with an up to date kernel and
properly working BCM4331 chip at the same time.

Looking at the changelog its most likely caused by the update to the
new upstream release in version 6.30.223.30+bdcom.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1379524] Re: 14e4:4365 Weak wifi signal

2015-01-28 Thread Andre Bogus
There is a patch for the driver on http://pastebin.com/pATazP6K – found
it through https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/broadcom-wl/

I've applied the patch on my Lenovo Z510 (which also has a BCM43142
chip) using dkms (copied the patch into /usr/src/bcmwl-…/patches, edited
the dkms.conf, adding the patch name, called dkms common-postinstall)
and since then the wifi has been rock solid.

@Christopher M. Penalver: Can I somehow help to include the patch in the
bcmwl-kernel-source package?

  Wireless.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1405915] Re: Broadcom sta driver not working correctly on BCM43142 - low signal recieved

2015-01-26 Thread Andre Bogus
Also affects Lubuntu Utopic Unicorn (and incidentially all other distros
with a =3.16 kernel I've tried). There is a patch on the arch linux
wiki that seems to solve the problem (At least all long downloads I
started last night have finished successfully). Here is the link to the
arch linux bug tracker: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/broadcom-wl/

And here is the link to the patch: http://pastebin.com/pATazP6K

The solution involves the following steps:

* copying the patch to
/usr/src/bcmwl-$(version)/patches/0020-null-pointer-crash.patch
* adding the patch into the /usr/src/bcmwl-$(version)/dkms.conf file (there are
other patches referenced, just add it after the last one
* running dkms build bcmwl-$(version) $(uname -r) (this should re-install the
module)
* rebooting the system
