Sorry but i have not found a chapter describing this process.
Are mainline kernels and upstream kernels the same.

I had some more time to investigate on bisect.
First i get the the quantal tree with the command
$ git clone git://kernel.ubuntu.com/archive-ubuntu/ubuntu-quantal.git
Now i have a local repository ubuntu-quantal
