[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1321889] Re: 1002:954f [Asus M2N-E SLI] Can't boot without radeon.audio=0 since kernel 3.13

2014-06-12 Thread Bug8 Johsnon
It must be a problem with the Saphire model, or something else... But
I'm not sure what, as I tried it in several machines.

Anyway since it seems I'm the only one getting this, I think I will put
a Linux incompatible sticker on the card and repurpose it in a windows
machine, or a distro that still have kernel 3.12.

Thanks you all for trying to help me.

Title:
  1002:954f [Asus M2N-E SLI] Can't boot without radeon.audio=0 since
  kernel 3.13

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
Since kernel 3.13-rc1, my computer will not boot.

WORKAROUND: In kernel =3.13-rc1+ use kernel boot parameter:
radeon.audio=0 (Will boot but no audio over HDMI)

  OR :

  1. Install ubuntu from an USD thumbdrive (Booting with nomodeset).
  2. Boot ubuntu (with nomodeset)
  3. Install the old 3.12 kernel
  4. Boot on 3.12 without nomodeset (and I guess, with radeon.audio=1 as defaut
argument.)
  5. Do this command : xrandr --output HDMI-0 --set audio on
  6. Now you can reboot with any kernel (have to confirm this only tested
3.13rc1 and 3.14) without radeon.audio=0 and with audio over HDMI.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1321889] Re: 1002:954f [Asus M2N-E SLI] Can't boot without radeon.audio=0 since kernel 3.13

2014-05-27 Thread Bug8 Johsnon
@Christopher M. Penalver :

htpc@htpc:~$ sudo dmidecode -s bios-version sudo dmidecode -s
bios-release-date
ASUS M2N-E SLI ACPI BIOS Revision 1301
09/16/2010

Is that ok now ?
And what about my AN8 as it is up to date ?

@Joseph Salisbury: Thanks, I installed it and tried to boot it, but it fails, I
attached a picture of what I get (I booted without quiet).

** Attachment added: Crash after trying Joseph Salisbury fix.

2014-05-24 Thread Bug8 Johsnon
Hello, thanks for your interest.

You made some weird changes without waiting for my reply, this issue is with my
HD4550, nothing to do with the motherboard.
I can replicate the bug on several other motherboards, with different chipset (
will list it if needed).

And sorry about the workaroud, it only works in 3.12 (but once made in
3.12 it seems to be also working in 3.14, but I need to reproduce it to
confirm.)

Title:
  1002:954f [Radeon HD 4350/4550] Can't boot without radeon.audio=0
  since kernel 3.13

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Title:
  Radeon 4550 can't boot without radeon.audio=0 since kernel 3.13

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Hello,
I have some kind of any distribution bugs here it is :
With every kernel more recent than 3.12 (I haven't still found the exact
commit, but the first ubuntu released kernel in which it happens is the
3.13rc1), it seems that the kernel is loaded with radeon.audio=1 by default,
and the ATI 4550 (and probably others) can't boot (black screen with frozen
system) or only with nomodeset.

This error is repoductible with any ubuntu version or flavor, and even
  with other distros.

So to boot any kernel more recent than 3.12 I have to use
radeon.audio=0 as an argument to boot.

But the second problem is that now, audio over HDMI is disabled, but I
have found somewhere a command that make audio over HDMI back :
xrandr --output HDMI-0 --set audio on.

I'm free to answer any question and to help to debug it as much I'm
  skilled enough to do it.
