Tested with default 4.15 and HWEs 4.18, 5.0, 5.3.

network problem is really apport issue. Boot kernel with apport=0
cmdline option, and network should work.

John, from the terminal issue command
sudo nano /etc/default/grub
Simple editor 'nano' will open.
Add line
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=text
at the end of file.
Save file and exit from nano.
issue command:
sudo update-grub
reboot.

Just found some sort of workaround - boot to login screen (gdm) which is
80% invisible and press Power button. Notebook going to suspend. Press
Power button again - notebook waking up and screen is ok!
