Another workaround that worked for me is to edit /etc/default/grub like so:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nomodeset"
followed by update-grub2
I am running with full disk encryption.

I think it would be helpful if the backport in comment #4 was attached as a
patch so we can fix this until it has reached Trusty proper. The patch at
https://lkml.org/lkml/2014/5/2/156 does not apply cleanly for me.
