[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1869501] Re: Bluetooth status in the Unity menu bar does not always match status in system settings

2020-03-28 Thread Khurshid Alam
That's indicator-bluetooth. So not a u-c-c bug. Also the issue could be
with gnome-bluetooth since it works fine on my machine.

Your error shows

"Failed to set mode: Blocked through rfkill (0x12) "...so the hardware
is blocking it. Try running "sudo rfkill unblock all" but you may have
to re-run it after each boot.

Bug description:
When no Bluetooth device is connected and I turn off Bluetooth with
the switch in the menu of the notification icon, the Bluetooth status
in System Settings app is still "on" however Bluetooth seems to be
  off.

Also, when Bluetooth is turned on, the status of a paired device may
show "connection on" in the notification icon menu when it is actually
not connected, as System Settings do show correctly. In this case I
have to switch off and on again if I want to activate the connection.

Also, I can not switch the connection to a paired device on or off
with the System Settings app. The switches are grey and I can not
click them, however they do always show the correct status.

I did provide a PPA for unity-control-center and unity-settings-daemon.
Although it may require an update.

Please add the PPA
(https://code.launchpad.net/~unity7maintainers/+archive/ubuntu/unity7-desktop),
update and install unity-control-center and unity-settings-daemon.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1659231] Re: drm/i915: Unity-control-center (or any other settings module) makes the system unresponsive (Unity7, Zesty) for Kernel > 4.6

2017-02-12 Thread Khurshid Alam
Well there are two problems here

1) Kernel warning: drm_irq.c:1326 drm_wait_one_vblank+0x191/0x1a0
[drm]().This is probably due to
https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/74c090b1bdc57b1c9f1361908cca5a3d8a80fb08
as stated in https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=93782

This can be fixed in by appending "video=SVIDEO-1:d" to kernel boot
command.

2) It's this bug which still exists in v4.10-rc7. The possible cause is :

eaf0d369a59c2086fe9c489e0a2a86e080ba - drm/i915: Roll out the helper
nonblock tracking.

A patch (https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/128918/) was proposed
to disable it But according to @Jim Rees's comment on the patch they are
not going to push it 4.9 and it may not land for 4.10 either.

So that means I have to manually apply the patch and see if it gets
fixed.

doesn't hang any more. So I am guessing problem lies in kernel > 4.6.
Marking it as affected.

** Package changed: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) => linux (Ubuntu)

** Summary changed:

- i915: Unity-control-center (or any other settings module) makes the system
unresponsive (Unity7, Zesty)
+ drm/i915: Unity-control-center (or any other settings module) makes the
system unresponsive (Unity7, Zesty)

** Summary changed:

system unresponsive (Unity7, Zesty)
+ drm/i915: Unity-control-center (or any other settings module) makes the

Whenever I open ¨Unity-Control-Center¨ makes the system unresponsive
for a while and sometimes forever. Same thing happens if I try to open
power or sound settings from indicators or when I try to add online
  accounts in evolution.

I can reproduce same with totem. But all other applications are
working fine. And everything works in Yakkety.

  Screencast:https://youtu.be/69PJZf055V8

I am happy to provide any other debugging info. Just don ask to use
¨apport collect¨ as it hangs as well! I can provide details manually
  through syslog or something.

System: Custom made (Intel Core2duo, 4GB RAM, Intel Mobile GME965/GLE960

  Graphics driver: i915
  Os: Ubuntu 17.04, 32bit
  UCC: 15.04.0+17.04.20161125.1-0ubuntu1

Edit: If I boot to recovery and use gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe, problem
disappears as well. That is why I think itś some sort of graphics
  issue.

2016-10-11 Thread Khurshid Alam
Now I can confirm It's definitely the kernel. Here are my test result:

Kernel RAM usage after boot
---
4.4.0-18: 600MB
4.4.0-22: 600MB

4.4.0-31: 900MB
4.4-0-38: 900MB
4.4-0-42: 1000MB

4.8-0-22: 900MB (Yakkety)

Can anyone confirm ?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1572801] Re: Ubuntu 16.04 Unity desktop uses much more ram than Ubuntu 15.10

2016-09-18 Thread Khurshid Alam
I have started experiencing this issue after latest kernel update. As
many discovered that memory leak in evolution-data-server is one of the
culprit. But even after killing all eds services the memory usage still
at 800mb+ unlike trusty (500~600mb). So it is not the only reason.

Btw, memory leak has been fixed in evolution-data-server >= 3.20,
although I don't which commit exactly does that. We can not use 3.20 on
16.04, but it is possible to cherry-pick those patches (I don't think
upstream will ever do that) which fixes the leak.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1414320] Re: Unity(7) freezes completely after Kernel update (3.18.0.9.9) on intel GMA-965 (Vivid)

2015-02-06 Thread Khurshid Alam
Thanks Christopher,

I tried with v3.18.5-vivid from kernel mainline ppa
(http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.18.5-vivid/).

Fortunately, I could NOT reproduce the freeze with it. (Although it has
some other problems like high fan speed, wlan issue..etc).

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1414320] Re: Unity(7) freezes completely after Kernel update (3.18.0.9.9) on intel GMA-965 (Vivid)

2015-01-30 Thread Khurshid Alam
I upgraded the BIOS ( now sudo dmidecode -s bios-version shows 68PVU
Ver. F.20 bios-release-date shows 02/11/2011) but It still freezes.

This what I did to reproduce:

1. Boot with 3.18.x.x kernel in Unity
2. Start gnome-system-log start monitoring
3. After few minutes crash occurs it prints out some information
4. System freezes.

Other desktop-shells are not affected.

Crash log before the freeze:

Title:
Unity(7) freezes completely after Kernel update (3.18.0.9.9) on intel
  GMA-965 (Vivid)

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
After I update the kernel to 3.18.0.9.9, Unity freezes few minutes
after login on Vivid. This happens for any compiz based session like
gnome-flashback(compiz). I tried booting with both the systemd
upstart from boot menu, but the outcome did not change. Ctrl+Alt+F1 or
Alt+SysRq does not work after freeze.

Just before the freeze syslog prints following error:

  --

  I have attached the complete syslog.txt xorg.txt
  (http://paste.ubuntu.com/9852608/) for the session.

It could also be a bug in kernel, however It does not crash at all on

  I have attached the complete syslog.txt xorg.txt

It could also be a bug in kernel, however It does not crash at all on

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1414320] Re: Unity(7) freezes completely after Kernel update (3.18.0.9.9) on intel GMA-965 (Vivid)

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

After I update the kernel to 3.18.0.9.9, Unity freezes few minutes after
login on Vivid. This happens for any compiz based session like gnome-
flashback(compiz). I tried booting with both the systemd upstart from
boot menu, but the outcome did not change. Ctrl+Alt+F1 or Alt+SysRq does
  not work after freeze.

Just before the freeze syslog prints following error:

2015-01-27 Thread Khurshid Alam
@Christopher  I can perform apport-collect

by booting into Unity with older 3.16.x kernel in Vivid

OR

by booting into non-compiz session like flashback-metacity with
problematic kernel 3.18.x. Will that help?

It could also be a bug in kernel, however It does not crash at all on
  non-compiz session like Gnome-Flashback (Metacity).
