Public bug reported: I updated ubuntu sep 30. Among other updates was kernel 3.8.0-31.46 After updating and rebooting I get grub, select ubuntu as always, then instead of going to the unity-greeter login screen I just get a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left and a mouse cursor
