[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1913014] Re: No audio on XPS 13 9370

2021-10-08 Thread linux enthuzed
I have an XPS 13 9370 with the same or similar issue on Ubuntu 20 and it
is not a fresh install. It has affected my machine for numerous kernel
versions and BIOS firmware versions.

alsa-info: http://alsa-
project.org/db/?f=47725ef4c2de6c2a8b3cff3dd68c7a2bc0c3635f

kernel:
Linux anonymous 5.4.0-88-generic #99-Ubuntu SMP Thu Sep 23 17:29:00 UTC 2021

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS

dmesg:

[  749.199716] snd_hda_intel :00:1f.3: no codecs initialized

I have tried toggling the audio support in the BIOS to minimize the
chance that this is a hardware/BIOS issue. The only output available in
the UI is "Dummy Output".

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1881494] Re: [amdgpu] suspend to ram (standby) crashes amdgpu (Ryzen-7 Vega - HP Envy x360)

2020-08-24 Thread Anonymous Linux User
Reading the initial bug report I see kolAflash said

> nomodeset seems to be essential, but not sufficient.

When I added nomodeset to /etc/default/grub (
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset" ) then I can boot
without issues, but suspend does not work. To reiterate:

 * the TTY1 screen is not blank on boot
 * sleep works
 * suspend does not work - you get this bug

Given this error in syslog:

> kernel: [0.047848] You have booted with nomodeset. This means your GPU
> drivers are DISABLED
> kernel: [0.047849] Unless you actually understand what nomodeset does,
> you should reboot without enabling it
> [0.047849] Any video related functionality will be severely degraded, and
> you may not even be able to suspend the system properly
> [0.047849] Unless you actually understand what nomodeset does, you should
> reboot without enabling it

I tried a few things without nomodeset in grub options. In this case:

  * the default screen, TTY1, (CTRL-ALT-F1) is blank on boot (or has the HP
logo only)
  * sleep works
  * suspend doesn't seem to work. If you leave the laptop in suspend mode for a
long time it does not resume. The screen is black with just a white underscore
on it. The last log lines in /var/log/syslog is

 systemd[1]: Reached target Sleep.
 systemd[1]: Starting Suspend...
 systemd-sleep[8263]: Suspending system...
 kernel: [ 9425.088936] PM: suspend entry (s2idle)

As a workaround for the default screen being blank on boot, you can go to TTY2
(CTRL-ALT-F2), log in and run startx from the command prompt.

Some tests:

* This does not seem to be the same issue as
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=204241

because the following command works just fine.

for i in $(seq 30); do sudo rtcwake -m mem -s 5; sleep 15; done

* I've tried adding GRUB_GFXMODE=1920x1080 to /etc/default/grub but that
doesn't seem to solve the issue with the screen on TTY1 being blank on
boot.

The commands pm-hibernate and pm-suspend give the errors in /var/log/syslog
> [ 2566.154192] Lockdown: grep: hibernation is restricted; see man
> kernel_lockdown.7
and nothing happens

The command pm-powersave gives the same "hibernation is restricted"
error in /var/log/syslog but the system goes blank and the is
unresponsive.

Title:
  [amdgpu] suspend to ram (standby) crashes amdgpu (Ryzen-7 Vega - HP
  Envy x360)

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  suspend to ram crashes amdgpu.
  System is still accessible via SSH after resume from standby.
  Happens when X is running (gdm/gnome with 3d acceleration) and also when X is
stopped.

  Also the computer never really goes into standby. The cpu fan is
  running all the time and the power button is fully lighted up.
  Nevertheless, I need to press CTRL to "wake" it, so I can access it
  via SSH.

  I'll attach the dmesg output of several attempts.
  This is the hardware:

https://store.hp.com/GermanyStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=9YN58EA=ABD=NTB
  Tested EFI and BIOS bootmode.

  Please let me know if I can help tracking this down.
  I'm a software developer (sadly not a kernel developer), so you can ask dirty
technical questions ;-)

  Workaround:
  Enable hibernation (suspend to disk) and use instead of suspend to ram
(standby).

  What didn't help:
  Kernel parameters: no_console_suspend nomodeset amdgpu.gpu_recovery=1
init_on_free=0 idle=nowait amd_iommu=flush
  echo mem > /sys/power/state
  systemctl start suspend.target
  echo 0 > /sys/power/pm_async
  Upgrading kernel from 5.4 to: 5.6.0-1010-oem

  Using the kernel parameters
no_console_suspend nomodeset amdgpu.gpu_recovery=1 init_on_free=0
idle=nowait amd_iommu=flush
  and doing
echo mem > /sys/power/state
  before suspend made the system acutally not crash.
  Nevertheless, the cpu fan and the power button stay full on/lighted. So the
system doesn't really go to standby either.

  I'll try to find the minimal combination of kernel parameters.
  nomodeset seems to be essential, but not sufficient.
  Without nomodeset the system wakes again for a few seconds, but freezes a
moment later (ssh still accessible).

Update 2: This isn't actually fully solved. What's working is short-term
"Sleep" but if you leave the laptop lid closed for a while it goes to
suspend (s2idle) and that crashes the system.

  Kernel parameters: no_console_suspend nomodeset amdgpu.gpu_recovery=1
init_on_free=0 idle=nowait amd_iommu=flush
  echo mem > /sys/power/state
  systemctl start suspend.target
  echo 0 > /sys/power/pm_async
  Upgrading kernel from 5.4 to: 5.6.0-1010-oem

  Using the kernel parameters
no_console_suspend nomodeset amdgpu.gpu_recovery=1 init_on_free=0
idle=nowait amd_iommu=flush
  and doing
echo mem > /sys/power/state
  before suspend made the system acutally not crash.
  Nevertheless, the cpu fan and the power button stay full on/lighted. So the
system doesn't really go to standby either.

  I'll try to find the minimal combination of kernel parameters.
  nomodeset seems to be essential, but not sufficient.
  Without nomodeset the system wakes again for a few seconds, but freezes a
moment later (ssh still accessible).

  the problem is gone. But when I use the 111 kernel the pcie errors
  come up again and the system boot hangs on it.

  This is my graphics card, it was suggested that the pcie errors might
  have to do with that, not sure about this.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1888070] Re: latest update freezes system on boot

2020-07-20 Thread Linux User
Neither 111 nor 109 kernel nor any older would work with a full boot
into system.

So I was advised to get rid of the amdgpu drivers and make sure the open
source AMD drivers are installed.

https://amdgpu-install.readthedocs.io/en/latest/install-installing.html
#uninstalling-the-amdgpu-graphics-stack

amdgpu-uninstall

https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-install-the-latest-amd-radeon-drivers-on-
ubuntu-18-04-bionic-beaver-linux

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt update && sudo apt -y upgrade

Additionally I installed
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack though I am not sure
if I had to also use that.

Possibly simply uninstalling the amdgpu drivers that are not compatible
with the latest kernel and switching to the open source Mesa release
drivers would also have been an option, though this is speculation.

Regardless with the open source AMD drivers I do not have any AER issues
(could also not get rid of those with pcie="noaer") and can enjoy a full
boot into the system with latest kernel and all updates.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1818547] Re: hid-sensor-hub spamming dmesg in 4.20 - 5.3

2019-11-26 Thread Anonymous Linux User
Also happening with HP Zbook x360, but only recently started (today).

As a workaround to stop your HD from filling up with this, create the
file

/etc/rsyslog.d/10-hidsensor.conf

With the two lines:

# Disable runaway messages:
:msg, contains, "hid-sensor-hub 001F:8087:0AC2.0003" ~

Then run

sudo service rsyslog restart

Title:
  hid-sensor-hub spamming dmesg in 4.20 - 5.3

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in linux source package in Disco:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  === SRU Justification ===
  [Impact]
  [ 406.165461] hid-sensor-hub 001F:8086:22D8.0002: hid_field_extract() called
with n (192) > 32! (kworker/5:1)

  [Fix]
  Let HID core allow longer input report length.

  [Test]
  User confirmed the fix works.

  [Regression Potential]
  Low. Longer input report length is now considered valid, shorter input
  report length doesn't get touched.

  === Original Bug Report ===

  Dmesg is a constant barrage of the same error:
  ```
  [  406.165461] hid-sensor-hub 001F:8086:22D8.0002: hid_field_extract() called
with n (192) > 32! (kworker/5:1)
  ```

  This does not occur in 4.19 but does occur in all mainline 4.20
  releases including 4.20.13 (linux-image-unsigned-4.20.13-042013).
  Tested with both Ubuntu's included libinput 1.10 and an updated
  libinput 1.12.

  Hardware (from lspci) includes a synaptic touchpad. Having the xorg
  synaptic driver installed makes no difference.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1846016]

2019-10-23 Thread linux
(In reply to Luca Coelho from comment #32)
> Here's the patch that was sent upstream:
> https://lore.kernel.org/linux-wireless/20191009094853.PfIm3J8o7DN_Femup-
> OXkJdtmKE7rftk1ODkm7cx-vk@z/

That
patch/https://git.kernel.org/torvalds/c/12e36d98d3e5acf5fc57774e0a15906d55f30cb9
 is not marked for stable afaics. I wonder if it should, as it contains this
line:
```
Fixes: f5a47fae6aa3 ("iwlwifi: mvm: fix version check for GEO_TX_POWER_LIMIT
support")
```
And that patch was recently backported to 5.3:
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git/commit/?h=linux-5.3.y=3a0b7157d6a9833cefd40b5f0fa1cc90285bb4b5

Thus I suspect that 12e36d98d3e5 should be backported, too. I guess Bug
205163 is an indicator for that, as it talks about Linux 5.3.5.

Scratch that, I mixed up the commits, sorry for the noise.

But I still wonder if
https://git.kernel.org/torvalds/c/12e36d98d3e5acf5fc57774e0a15906d55f30cb9
should be backported, as I see warnings mentioned in Bug 205163 here as
well on a system with a 3168

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1416189] Re: AMD [Firmware Bug]: cpu 0, try to use APIC500 (LVT offset 0) for vector 0xf9, but the register is already in use for vector 0x400 on another cpu

2016-08-29 Thread Linux
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1152484 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1152484

Supposedly, [bug #1152484](https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1152484)
addresses "AMD family 10h cpus". I am having this issue with the Trinity
CPU (15h), the same processor from this bug report, which [according to
a user who submitted a kernel patch for the other
bug](https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1152484/comments/20)
indicates a slightly different bug.

Perhaps we need to re-open this bug and address the actual firmware bug
and system slowness that results from this issue.

Sounds like rric has fixed a harmless error message, but that a firmware
bug still exists, from comment:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1152484/comments/20

Are you suggesting that we should open a new bug report for the actual
bug? That would cause no small amount of confusion because searching for
the error text will lead directly to this report.

I am running an A8-4500M AMD processor.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1438510] Re: [REGRESSION] bluetooth headset no longer supports a2dp

2016-04-25 Thread Linux Lurker
@karlgrz

I saw the issues you were having and had recently just figured out the
same work-around. Just as I was going to post it for you, I see that you
too have narrowed it down to this repeatable behavior.

For me however, I do not switch back to HSP, rather I turn the profile OFF in
pavucontrol "configuration" tab. Then I disconnect the bluetooth using the its
graphic interface.
The next time I connect the bluetooth device, it connects just fine. Then I
simply go to the config tab in pavucontrol to switch the device to A2DP sink.
It works every time this way.

In the past, switching the profile to OFF in pavucontrol prior to disconnecting
the bluetooth device was unnecessary.
I am currently running Kubuntu 16.04 LTS, but have had 16.04 installed since
beta. This regression was not present for me in any previous versions.

Status in linuxdoc-tools package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:

  Processing good (valid) files works fine. With a very small bad sample file,
you can see below that the sgml2html utility (which is calling into

should simply die.

  $ sgml2html  --split=0 linuxdoc-bad.sgml

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1405489] Re: [HP ZBook 15 Mobile Workstation] Ubuntu 14.10 random freeze and lock up with NVIDIA

2014-12-28 Thread Anonymous Linux User
I have updated the BIOS.

(
  Asside:
  For any other ZBook users note that the directions at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate are
  incorrect as there is no README in the download from HP.
  Instead, on Boot press ESC to get into the BIOS setup and follow the
instructions in the BIOS Upgrade section.
)

After having upgraded the BIOS I changed NVIDIA back to the NVIDIA -
Power mode

$ cat /proc/acpi/bbswitch
:01:00.0 ON

And now can confirm that this issue still occurs.

Changing to confirmed as per instructions and posting updated BIOS data.

$ sudo dmidecode -s bios-version  sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
L70 Ver. 01.30
12/08/2014

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1310762] Re: [HP ZBook 15 Mobile Workstation] Ubuntu 14.04 random freeze and lock up

2014-12-23 Thread Anonymous Linux User
Also getting this with a zBook 15 and Ubuntu 14.10
Linux  3.16.0-28-generic #38-Ubuntu SMP Fri Dec 12 17:37:40 UTC 2014 x86_64

(rev ff)

$ dpkg --list | grep nvidia

ii  nvidia-prime0.6.7
 amd64Tools to enable NVIDIA's Prime
ii  nvidia-settings 331.20-0ubuntu8
 amd64Tool for configuring the NVIDIA graphics driver

Ctrl-alt-F1 , ctrl-alt-f7 workaround unlocks things.

Tried changing /etc/default/grub to have

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash rcutree.rcu_idle_gp_delay=1

but it did not change the lockup.

In kern.log get

 kernel: [ 6891.094246] ACPI Warning: \_SB_.PCI0.PEGP.DGFX._DSM:
Argument #4 type mismatch - Found [Buffer], ACPI requires [Package]
(20140424/nsarguments-95)

If I run nvidia-settings and change PRIME profiles from

NVIDIA (Performance Mode)
to
Intel (Power Saving Mode)

then it stops the lock up

May be related to https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=763272 as I noticed that

With PRIME profile as NVIDIA you get (the below number is from memory - but the
ON I know was set )
$ cat /proc/acpi/bbswitch
:01:00.0 ON

and it can't be changed as per bug
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=763272

Also with PRIME profile as Intel you get
$ cat /proc/acpi/bbswitch
:01:00.0 OFF

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1305522] Re: Backport Synaptics HID touchpad driver for 14.04

2014-10-05 Thread Joe Linux
Hello,

I am very pleased to announce that about 2 weeks ago after a kernel-
firmware update my Synaptics touch pad is now fully fonctionnal when
before that it was not working at all.

* Ultrabook HP Spectre 13-h201ef x2 *
- Release: Ubuntu 14.04.1 (trusty) 64-b
- Kernel: 3.13.0-32-generic (eg. the current one)
- FIX: linux-firmware 1.127.7 (but the fix happened with an earlier version,
really don't know which one)
- Touch Pad SYNAPTICS v.103u9
- GPointing is also now fully working

Thanks to everybody who have worked on this issue and have found the right fix.
Joe

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1265883] Re: [PC HP Split 13-m103es x2] New Synaptics Touchpad v103S doesn't work

2014-08-17 Thread Joe Linux
Hello,

I have the same issue on my new Hybrid Ultrabook, the HP Spectre
13-h201ef x2 with a clean install of Ubuntu 14.04.1 64-b in dual boot
with Windows 8.1 Update 1.

Under Ubuntu, my Synaptics Touchpad doesn't work at all (No response
from the Touchpad) and I referred to the following Ubuntu document:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingTouchpadDetection to try solving the
issue but with no success.

* DebuggingTouchpadDetection *
In case your Touchpad doesn't work at all (No response from the Touchpad)
This is generally a case of a kernel (linux) or xorg bug. Check by connecting
an external mouse to see if that works or not.

2. If yes, execute at a terminal:
cat /proc/bus/input/devices

One should see:
I: Bus=0011 Vendor=0002 Product=0007 Version=01b1
N: Name=SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad
P: Phys=isa0060/serio2/input0
S: Sysfs=/devices/platform/i8042/serio2/input/input8
U: Uniq=
H: Handlers=mouse2 event8
B: EV=b
B: KEY=420 0 7 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
B: ABS=1103

If you do not find something like this (which is my case), then the bug is in
the linux kernel. Please follow these steps:
File the bug against the linux package.
Provide the general information.
Enter the following commands in a terminal:
dmesg  ~/dmesg
cat /proc/bus/input/devices  ~/devices
Attach as separate attachments to your bug report ~/dmesg, ~/devices, and your
/var/log/Xorg.0.log.

Here attached the first dmesg file I have done on my HP Spectre 13 x2.
The two other are following.

My kernel version is 3.13.0-34-generic and my system is up to date.

Thank you for your help.
Cheers.
Joe

I have almost fixed the wifi stuff which was not working at all, and no
wired Ethernet alternative on my PC, due to seems to be a misleading
issue between acer-wmi and hp-wmi!

I tried to issue an apport-collect 1305522 report as mentioned in the first
post but I'm getting the following error window (in french):
Vous n'avez pas rapporté ce problème ou n'y êtes pas abonné, ou le rapport est
un doublon ou déjà fermé.
Veuillez créer un nouveau rapport en utilisant « apport-bug ».

So I'm requested to create a new report using apport-bug. But how to use
this stuff?

Thank you.
Joe

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1305522] Re: Backport Synaptics HID touchpad driver for 14.04

2014-07-31 Thread Joe Linux
Hello,

I have forgotten to say that an external USB mouse is working well when
the touchscreen both docked and undocked has some missing capabilities
as the scrolling.

Now, I'm getting the following in a terminal on my HP Spectre 13 x2 with
Ubuntu 14.04-1 64-bit and Kernel 3.13.0-32-generic:

joe@PC-Joe-S13x2:~$ xinput --list
⎡ Virtual core pointer  id=2[master pointer  (3)]
⎜   ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointerid=4[slave  pointer  (2)]
⎜   ↳ HID 04d9:0499 id=9[slave  pointer  (2)]
⎣ Virtual core keyboard id=3[master keyboard (2)]
↳ Virtual core XTEST keyboard id=5[slave keyboard (3)]
↳ Power Button  id=6[slave  keyboard (3)]
↳ Video Bus id=7[slave  keyboard (3)]
↳ HP TrueVision Full HD id=8[slave keyboard (3)]
↳ AT Translated Set 2 keyboard id=10 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ HP Wireless hotkeys id=11 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ HP WMI hotkeysid=12   [slave  keyboard (3)]
Looks like the Synaptics touchpad is: HID 04d9:0499 id=9 [slave pointer (2)]

joe@PC-Joe-S13x2:~$ dmesg | grep psmouse
joe@PC-Joe-S13x2:~$ lsmod | grep psmouse
Both give no output.

joe@PC-Joe-S13x2:~$ xinput --list-props 9
