My computer was under warranty (brand new) so I had the

clicking just in case I would have to demonstrate to some technician,

persists. However I managed to borrow another Latitude E7440 and for the
time I had access to that laptop I could not reproduce the problem.
Therefore I have to conclude that it is a hardware problem, not a
software one.
