Title:
16.04 LTS hangs on installer when running nested virtualization on
  16.04 host.

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:

Linux host 4.4.0-28-generic #47-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jun 24 10:09:13 UTC

On it I'm running an am64 16.04 LTS VM:

  Linux vm1 4.4.0-31-generic #50-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 13 00:07:12 UTC 2016

I have nested virtualization enabled :

  vm1$ cat /sys/module/kvm_intel/parameters/nested
  Y

When I try and install vm2 (tried both 16.04.1 i386 and amd64), the
installer hangs on first menu, at language selection. qemu-kvm goes up
to 100% cpu, and the hangs, have to virsh destroy/kill the KVM

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1614209] Re: 16.04 LTS hangs on installer when running nested virtualization on 16.04 host.

2016-12-05 Thread Phil Regnauld
So I'm still not able to install 16.04 under 16.04 using KVM. I've tried
with the latest 16.04 ISO, but still freezes and uses 100% CPU - this
works if the guest is Yakkety.

Why was this marked as incomplete ? Now it's expired ? Anything missing
? Should I test again on a recent 16.04 update ?

That works - it boots into the live desktop, and it's clearly using
accelerated (nested) KVM.

Title:
16.04 LTS hangs on installer when running nested virtualization on
  16.04 host.

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:

Linux host 4.4.0-28-generic #47-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jun 24 10:09:13 UTC

I have nested virtualization enabled :

  vm1$ cat /sys/module/kvm_intel/parameters/nested
  Y

When I try and install vm2 (tried both 16.04.1 i386 and amd64), the
installer hangs on first menu, at language selection. qemu-kvm goes up
to 100% cpu, and the hangs, have to virsh destroy/kill the KVM

  2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

On it I'm running an am64 16.04 LTS VM:

  Linux vm1 4.4.0-31-generic #50-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 13 00:07:12 UTC 2016
  x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I have nested virtualization enabled :

  vm1$ cat /sys/module/kvm_intel/parameters/nested
  Y

When I try and install vm2 (tried both 16.04.1 i386 and amd64), the
installer hangs on first menu, at language selection. qemu-kvm goes up
to 100% cpu, and the hangs, have to virsh destroy/kill the KVM
  process.

  Other info on vm1:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1448269] Re: qemu guest hangs on nested kvm startup with host kernel oops

2016-08-17 Thread Phil Regnauld
I'm seeing a similar issue with trying to install the latest 16.04.1
i386 edition
(http://releases.ubuntu.com/16.04/ubuntu-16.04.1-server-i386.iso) under
libvirt/virt-manager, on an amd64 VM running 16.04.1 (4.4.0-31-generic
#50-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 13 00:07:12 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64
GNU/Linux).

qemu-kvm hangs, have to virsh destroy/kill the KVM process.

cat /etc/modprobe.d/qemu-system-x86.conf:

options kvm_intel nested=1

... and kvm-ok says acceleration is enabled.

Should I open a new bug report on this ?

qemu guest hangs on nested kvm startup with host kernel oops

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:

Status in linux source package in Utopic:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  [Impact]
Users of nested KVM may experience the L1 VM hanging when booting an L2 VM.
Overall this seems to be due to issues with external interrupts not reaching L1
when L2 gets booted.

  [Test Case]
  Run a nested KVM instance:
  https://gist.github.com/arges/9d21c6da03a8c10d3980

  [Fix]
  commit 4fa7734c62cdd8c07edd54fa5a5e91482273071a
  commit f3380ca5d7edb5e31932998ab2e29dfdce39c5ed

  --

I'm creating a vivid qemu guest on a trusty host with
3.13.0-48-generic kernel. When I start a guest inside that guest, I
get the oops below on the host while the first guest hangs and must be
  (virsh) destroyed.
