Ran several validations on this.
The issue for which the fixes were submitted works as advertised.
Also ran several xfstests using various mount scenarios (DFS and regular)
against various file servers (Azure, Windows, samba).

Just out of curiosity, who's is using btrfs. It doesn't matter whether
you have /home or / on btrfs. I am not certain whether it plays any
role, but it seems to be the common denominator in my tests.

@brad-figg: I ran the command you asked me to. I was able to
successfully launch vncserver and run apport-collect in that. I presume
the command failed since it showed a backtrace in python and a long html
output. dpkg also warned me that package 'linux' was not found. I'm

First off, sorry if this comment is redundant.
I cannot say for sure whether the issue happened after an update. I run
apt-get upgrade very often and thus cannot peg it down to an update. I
have definitely not upgraded (dist-upgrade) my Ubuntu version.
I will give the latest kernel a shot, but,
I don't think I can run apport-collect. So far, I've had it happen about
3-4 times over 30 hours of uptime. If it does happen again, _and_ I'm
able to start a vnc session, _and_ said vnc session works, I will
definitely update this bug report with the logs.

might be a bit lower, but your system will be very stable and usable with
this.

Could someone please let me know how to apply this patchwork to mainstream

I tried on the latest 4.6-rc5 and it failed. It did work on
drm-intel-nightly though which is a not mainstream branch.

off, no virtual terminals work, audio buffer keeps looping if present
when freezing).
