No, I don't need a backport. I'll just wait for Zesty to be released. How do I "mark this Status Invalid?" On Mon, Dec 26, 2016 at 12:02 AM, Christopher M. Yes, this version works. Thank you very much. On Sun, Dec 25, 2016 at 12:49 AM, Christopher M. Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1584284] Re: Ubuntu 16.04 LiveCD does not boot on AMD A10 chip
I had to download and burn a new image from Ubuntu, because I had thrown out the original disk I used several months ago. I got the "ubuntu-16.04-desktop-amd64.iso" from the regular download page. On the grub menu I selected the entry, "*Try Ubuntu without installing." I removed the quiet and splash keywords, and changed the entry "set gfxpayload=keep" to "gfxpayload=text". Ctrl+x did not work, so I pressed F10 to boot. Nothing at all. No output. After about 20 seconds the screen changed to an even darker black and a few seconds later I got the "no signal" message from the monitor. I also tried booting without editing the command line, and the behavior was exactly the same. I also get the same behavior from the latest versions of Linux Mint Cinnamon and Peppermint Linux, which are based on Ubuntu 16.04. Just out of curiosity I'm going to see if I can download the current version of FreeBSD (which used to be my preferred *nix) and see if it will boot. At this point none of the other Linux distributions I've tried have worked. On Sat, Jul 9, 2016 at 7:25 AM, Christopher M. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1568211] Re: no UMS support in radeon module
I have an AMD A10-5800K (HD 7660D graphics) and have not been able to boot with 'nomodeset.' I get an error message, "ERROR: no UMS support in radeon module," and then in a few seconds the screen fades to black. I've had no problem booting from my USB with 14.04 LTS installed, or from the 15.10 LiveCD, but 16.04 seems to be hopeless. I can't even get a log of what's going on, because booting doesn't complete. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1568211 Title: no UMS support in radeon module Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: I upgraded overnight from Wily to Xenial. The system will not boot. Only a blank screen after grub loads the kernel. The recovery kernel loads fine and I was able to find the following messages: [drm] VGACON disable radeon kernel modesetting [drm:radeon_init [radeon]] *ERROR* no UMS support in radeon module! The recovery kernel command line had a nomodeset parameter that was not in the main kernel command line. Adding the nomodeset parameter the main kernel command line finally booted the system. It's kind of ugly but it seems to work. Note: For what it's worth I reported a similar issue against several Utopic kernels (bug #1407505). There was a back and forth with jsalisbury until a kernel finally worked. I have had no problems until today. Hope that helps.
