I'm facing the same issue on my laptop after an upgrade from 16.04 to 16.10. I
tried:
* grub-install
* boot-repair
Neither worked. I also tried installing the mainline linux kernel
(4.9-rc1), that didn't help either. As others have mentioned, this is
probably something in grub, not necessarily

Daniel: I updated my git repo and checked out version 10.1 (which is
what my install currently hast). I am still unable to repro the problem
from git checkout because the moment I start X with AccelMethod uxa,
the problem goes away.
Is there any better of testing this one library against an X
Note that this still happens on trusty with all updates installed as of
few minutes back.

fixed the issue. I had to delete kwinrc for it to pick up on the change
though.

The laptop is doing a hybrid sleep: writing to disk and then sleeping to
RAM. It does not happen when I revert to the default suspend-only mode.
Also, I notice this happens only when my RAM utilisation is high. I
don't know if that is a bug or intended because my swap partition is
small.

Daniel, are you sure this is a problem in i965? dmesg seems to indicate
