[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1053897] Re: kernel does not boot without noefi on commandline
On different hardware GA A75 UD4H this is a very similar issue regarding using EFI to install Ubuntu. Have tried from 11.04 and up to 13.04 all with same result ie does not run installer in EFI mode, noefi does not work for me but running installer using BIOS/legacy mode does work then installing grub-efi gets Ubuntu booting using EFI mode. My bug report (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/1213119) is still unfinished and not confirmed as bug as of yet. There are many similar bugs to this one and mine. My own research is indicating this type of problem is more and more likely to be vendor hard coding of firmware. This is unproven theory and currently stands as speculation. Just seems many vendors creating very similar issues regarding the installation of Ubuntu using U/EFI and that is with or without Secure Boot. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1053897 Title: kernel does not boot without noefi on commandline Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Status in “linux” source package in Quantal: Incomplete Bug description: The machine is an ASUS Laptop N53SN. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1053897] Re: kernel does not boot without noefi on commandline
Ubuntu flavours =12.04.1 may cause trouble regarding making a 16bit; or wanting to use a 16bit ESP whereas firmwares are looking for 32bit ESP= no worky!? The workaround is to allow installer to run as it wants to but be sure to copy ESP save in another location then delete 16bit ESP and remake 32bit ESP replacing the files from 16bit ESP before rebooting trying to use U/EFI. source http://www.rodsbooks.com/gb-hybrid-efi/ A FAT-16 ESP, on the other hand, seems problematic. Ubuntu 11.04 (and 11.10) in EFI mode creates a dinky FAT-16 ESP, and after my test install of Ubuntu 11.04, the board hung on reboot until I reworked the ESP as FAT-32. Thus, if you plan to install Ubuntu, or any other OS that creates a FAT-16 ESP, be prepared to fix it, preferably before the system reboots! rodsbooks is an absolutely indispensible source of all things factual regarding U/EFI which demystifies and disproves many myths as well as misinformation regarding this subject. Again these type of idiosyncrasies appear to be vendor specific. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1025467] Re: sysrq is now completely disabled, it would be nice to maintain the ability to reboot etc
Booting Ubuntu Desktop amd64 liveDVD (3.8.0-19-generic) in BIOS mode searching computer using file manager to find sysreq settings is now found in /etc/systl.d and named 10-magic-sysrq.conf. Looking in my Ubuntu partitionb which was last bootable using 3.8.0.28 kernel; also confirms sysrq as being disabled by default Can not find why this has been disabled as default so would like to take opportunity to ask; Why is sysrq disabled as default on liveDVD? Reading the original bug report refers to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/194676 confirms there may be secuity issues related to this. Is it possible to ask for some reasoning to this? I thought linux had reputation of being secure and virus free!? Is not a better idea to have sysrq enabled to allow the well known and used RSEIUB(O) if sytem hangs or freezes? At least providing the protection of minimising having to recover sytem files or data due to corrupting hard drive and the need for fsck to kick in or be started manually from recovery.? Am asking these questions after watching 17 08 2013 episode of the BBC programme [Click](http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0392vqy/Click_17_08_2013/) and the cyberwarfare article really caught my attention. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 993164] Re: error file not found you need to load the kernel first failed to boot both default and fallback entries
This error is reproducable on my hardware =12.04.2 with EFI mode on. Am posting this from 13.04 amd 64 desktop live session because of this error and others possibly associated with it. Using ga a75 ud4h mobo with latest firmware which uses EFI 1.1 rev 2 specification firmware. rEFInd sees this as ver UEFI 2.1. Using msinfo32 and windows upgrade assistant confirm this firmware/hardware is not Secure Boot capable. Searching Ask Ubuntu this bug may have regressed/resurfaced since 12.04.2/12.10. (http://askubuntu.com/search?tab=votesq=you%20need%20to%20load%20kernel%20first). One similar question there http://askubuntu.com/q/206950/102029 links to this wiki http://web.dodds.net/~vorlon/wiki/blog/SecureBoot_in_Ubuntu_12.10/ which i have found helpful in getting confidence to post my first bug comment here. The article talks of first stage and second stage boot loaders as well as shim. Realise shim is Secure Boot related so is not the issue on this hardware but do not understand first stage and second stage boot loaders. Do know rEFInd sees BIOS/legacy bootloaders on media as fallback loaders. I am guessing this is second stage bootloader. Which means if first stage loader is the signed.efi image then there is no usable .efi image to use on my hardware. How to EFI install Ubuntu on a system that is EFI capable but is not Secure Boot capable? Understand 11.04 11.10 want to make 16bit EFI partition if installing to a completely unallocated space drive which would mean fixing before trying to boot to - source http://www.rodsbooks.com/gb-hybrid-efi/ which is a different story. I asked this http://askubuntu.com/questions/208405/how-to-efi-install-ubuntu which links to thread over on Ubuntu Forums to try and find a working solution or a conclusion that explains why not! 13.04 installed using legacy settings although EFI was on which indicates the expected sequence described in http://web.dodds.net/~vorlon/wiki/blog/SecureBoot_in_Ubuntu_12.10/ However i can not replicate this and have never booted any Ubuntu installer using EFI mode on this hardware. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/993164 Title: error file not found you need to load the kernel first failed to boot both default and fallback entries Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: after upgrading to this kernel, the VM under ESXi 5.0 fails to boot the new kernel You have to boot from a live cd and uninstall the kernel to fix. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1072378] Re: [Asus Eee PC 1015BXO] Ubuntu 12.10 EFI support is not ready
This affects precise, quantal , and raring. Have not tried saucy yet. Is there a way to confirm the first stage installer are capable of running on an EFI system that is not secure boot capable? Is shim required on non SecureBoot system? I suspect if shim/ first stage installer are not able to run using .efi image and are only looking for signed.efi criteria not finding either so should drop to legacy/bios installer automatically but fall back installer is not running either. is only speculation because do not know the intended meaning of first and second stage installer- ref:http://web.dodds.net/~vorlon/wiki/blog/SecureBoot_in_Ubuntu_12.10/ ga a75 ud4h mobo being used. When booting precise, quantal or raring with EFI on get to situation as described http://askubuntu.com/q/208405/102029 and several other related questions. Searching ask ubuntu http://askubuntu.com/search?q=need+to+load+kernel+first+ confirms a recnt increase in these queries on differing hardware so this is almost a certain bug. Doing ls -l after dropping to command prompt when getting UEFI grub screen ref https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI#Identifying_if_the_computer_boots_the_HDD_in_EFI_mode confirms cd0,apple1 and cd0apple2 images are detected and might go some way to explaining why they are not usable on an amd 64 platform. running lsefisystab here also indicates EFI ver 1.1. rev 2 rEFInd sees this firmware as UEFI 2.1 which goes to completely confirm this is not Secure Boot capable system. Confirm Christopher M. Penalver's workaround does work but i do not see this as afull solution due to the lack of being to use efibootmgr when booting live session- which has to be with EFI off due to installer bug. No efi = no efibootmgr. If dual booting with windows using this workaround will mean having to simply create grub_bios partition, install grub-efi and possibly rename windows bootfmgr to trick firmware to booting grub-efi. Using boot-repair seems to be the accepted and easiest way of doing this but has hugely varying success rates. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1072378 Title: [Asus Eee PC 1015BXO] Ubuntu 12.10 EFI support is not ready Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: It crashes to the installation of grub (ASUS 1015BX, look screenshot) Here the hardware tested: http://kmuto.jp/debian/hcl/ASUS/1015BX+C-60 --- ApportVersion: 2.6.1-0ubuntu3 Architecture: amd64 AudioDevicesInUse: USERPID ACCESS COMMAND /dev/snd/controlC1: ubuntu 3223 F pulseaudio /dev/snd/controlC0: ubuntu 3223 F pulseaudio CasperVersion: 1.328 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.10 LiveMediaBuild: Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal - Release amd64 (20121017.5) MachineType: ASUSTeK Computer INC. 1015BXO Package: linux (not installed) ProcEnviron: TERM=xterm PATH=(custom, no user) LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash ProcFB: 0 radeondrmfb ProcKernelCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/casper/vmlinuz.efi.signed file=/cdrom/preseed/hostname.seed boot=casper quiet splash -- ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.5.0-17.28-generic 3.5.5 PulseList: Error: command ['pacmd', 'list'] failed with exit code 1: Home directory /home/ubuntu not ours.
