While the boot parameter i915.disable-pch_pwm=0 worked on ubuntu 12.04 with kernel 3.8.0-35.50, it doesn't seem to work for me on ubuntu 14.04 with kernel 3.13.0-24. I dual boot windows so I cannot enable legacy options rom. I had to boot on 3.8.0-29 kernel for ever due to low brightness making my computer unusable.
