I followed the suggestions in the related bug report. Removing iio-
sensor-proxy indeed solved the problem completely, with no need for
rotation lock. Should I move the bug report somewhere else at this
stage?

I have now reverted all the way back to the kernel I use on 18.04 (4.15)
and the issue still happens.
The accelerometer position in both 18.04 and 19.04
(/sys/devices/platform/lis3lv02d/) read the same.
